Reviewing customization.

I live on the southern shores of Lake Erie and work south of there. Because of that I have my home location near my home and bonus near my work. These are 2 areas that I know very well. Currently all I get to review is Ontario Canada submissions. I’m fine with reviewing a few, but all I get recently is Canadian and long distance( California, Texas, Massachusetts, etc.) submissions. It’s infuriating for our local reviewers and submitters because we never get to review local. The lake is about 50 miles wide, so I think it would naturally fall into our “area” but in reality it takes 4 hours to reach these submissions, and that’s prior to COVID. Now I don’t think we could even get past the border. So, is there anything niantic or I can do to alleviate this issue? Any helpful response will be appreciated.

Unfortunatly not. You're "local area" you get reviews from is your ingress cell (S2L6) and the eight cells surrounding it. Which is a really large area. And the random submissions from random places are also added in so areas with not enough reviewers will have things reviewed, along with outside reviewers not having the same biases local ones will.
Reviewers in poor/fair rating get far less outside reviews to do, so the only way to get local stuff to review more often it to tank your reviewer rating by reviewing poorly (don't do this). And that's s still the whole nine S2L6 cell area.
Same here, on the south shore of Ontario - what's worse for me is that no matter how pretty my pictures and valid my submissions, everything that shows up in my area Showcase is from the same corner of Canada. I applaud our submitters to the north, they seem to be working hard.....but some geographic variety in the showcase would be a quick feel-good fix for the people who don't live in what I'll call "Showcase Town" here.
Just curious, do you ever get any Ohio submissions? For me it feels like 8/10 of mine are Canadian and the other 2 are distanced. I don’t mind reviewing Canadian submissions, what bothers me is that I know we have plenty in our area, 10-20 people I know of that are actively submitting and using up their 7 per two weeks, but I never see any of them. I have over 20 in queue/voting some over 4 months old and people are telling me they haven’t seen any of them.
The long distance ones are people who reviewed most likely because they needed to review in order to get their nominations reviewed at all. Are you really angry at them and don't want to review their stuff? If you're seeing the stuff from Massachusetts that I think you're seeing, the wait is 9 months to a year and in cases unknown resolution time without an upgrade. It was stuff from surrounding states like Maine and Rhode Island making up a significant portion of the Massachusetts local feed.
I have previously reported this issue with the showcase tab as a bug, but the Wayfarer team is adamant that it's working as intended, even though it seems silly to be showing nominations from the same 3 towns that I've never been to and am never likely to visit as they're about as far away from me as they can be whilst still being in my cell. There are lots of other places in the cell which I'm sure have awesome wayspots, and I'd be happy if I was seeing variety in the showcase, but nope, it's just the same 3 places over and over and over, to the point where I barely even bother acknowledging the showcase tab any more. It needs changing, but we don't have hope of getting it changed if the Wayfarer team don't accept that it isn't functioning in the correct way.
no, no, don't get it twisted. I don't have issues with reviewing remote things. I would just like some local things as well. My last 5 sets( review until the cooldown hits) have reviewed less then 5 local submissions. Of those 1 was a duplicate, 1 was a location edit and the other was a title edit. I review to help find new things in my area. Parks that historically had few POI or things of that nature so I have an idea of what new places are getting new POI. I understand how the system works with upgrades and I don't mind reviewing their submissions, but at the end of the day it would be nice to have some from my area as well especially since I know they are out their in voting.
If the local size was reduced from what it is now to just the 1 S2L6 cell, then you could benefit or you could be in a worse position. It would depend on if you had sufficient number of reviewers to ever get a decision without an upgrade and the number of nominations per reviewer.
Back when I played in the Western PA area, I got Ohio submissions. Now that I've moved to the other side of the state, most of my 'local' reviews are from the Baltimore and Philly areas, though mostly from those cities' surrounding suburbs and towns.
