PoGo datamine: categories for submissions
I've got no idea what the approach to discussion of code datamines on the forums is, but...
As well as what seems to be a visibility push for Wayfarer as a whole to eligible Pokemon players.

Asking what category a nomination falls under could be a good thing to make nominators think about what they're submitting. Could help cut down in coal.
I'm hoping it doesn't lead to reviewers saying "Well the app doesn't have a category asking for this thing so I'm gonna reject it" cause Nianitc hasn't always been good at being comprehensive before.
Remember, waste bins and elementary schools are categories on Wayfarer for reviewing.
While no list can be comprehensive, Niantic has been known to use categorically ineligible options. Similar to the concern above, many things I have nominated (or reviewed) aren't listed as categories so I worry would be made even more difficult to nominate and see approved.
I'm excited for something? But, I don't understand why Niantic is doing these weird pushes when the guidelines are still so bad.
Tree is also a category.... Ready for the wave of 10,000 trees in wayfarer.
I nominated a tree a few days ago, lbvs
I also got a pile of mulch approved a week ago. I call it "Ode to honeypot: bag of mulch."
I wonder if an invalid category is chosen, it’s still submitted but then auto-rejected by the system?
Also, I believe the notes also mention a Submission Test, or at least that you need to complete your onboarding by going to Wayfarer?
Regarding the auto-reject, I really hope not. There are all sorts of categories that, while nearly always ineligible, could in theory be eligible. Let's say I'm nominating a historic elementary school (that is no longer a school). I know that it would be best to classify this as a "historic building." But should a less experienced player who makes the same nomination get an auto-reject if they pick "elementary school?"
I suppose so. It would be handy to see as a reviewer though even.
“This has been nominated under “Post Office”” and you look and it’s a bunch of rocks.
The ideal thing would be that when the submitter selects a category the next screen tells them what is and isn't eligible in that specific category. "Elementary school: Ineligible if it is an active school. May be eligible as a historic building if it is no longer used as a school."
Waste bins are an interesting category. My neighborhood is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and each of the trash cans has a historic plaque describing the history of the building that it's near. We also have a lot of trash cans that are decorated in unique mosaic tile art. They are just like utility boxes-- they don't qualify on their own but the artwork on them certainly can. (I've included a photo of a random can from my neighborhood.)
The waste bin is not eligible. The artwork or historic information sign on the bin is what makes it eligible.
i think Niantic just will have the dropdown to select, and then the same stuff will come up that people COULD categorize on Wayfarer.
In the end this could be very good to make people categorize at the same moment the submission is made. Niantic would be able to select all Playgrounds and let them batch-review by selected people.
did i really think that?
I think it's something that needs constant reminding.
For instance, artwork on electrical utility boxes is a very common subject for nominations in my country. However, it's so common that some submitters (mainly kids, I think, but that's just a guess) are under the impression that it's the boxes themselves that are eligible - leading to a growing number of plain boxes as submissions, with "it provides electricity/internet to the area" often being given as justification in the supporting info.
So, using that example - a painted box would be eligible under the "painting" category; but a plain box would be ineligible under the "utility box" category.
And using Hosette's example - a historical sign on a waste bin would be eligible under the "historical sign" category, but ineligible under a "waste bin" category.
"The Tree That Owns Itself" would certainly be categorized as a tree, yes? lol
yes it is the same here in Germany. They submit plain grey boxes
I'm not optimistic about those new features. Or rather, I'm not optimistic that Niantic will implement them in the right way.
We've seen how people cheat on the Wayfarer test, watching Youtube videos and answering the questions simultaneosly. This could be a potential problem if Niantic decides to implement the "Submission test" the same way as "Wayfarer test".
For the second feature. I feel people will just pick a random category. Or if that category is correctly picked, reviewers will just reject it, and will have the same problem as getting nominations rejected for wrong reasons.
I simply can't see how those two new feature could possibly work. I might be pessimistic, but I really don't trust Niantic will do a good job.
lol wish someone would tell my local reviewers that
As I said above, "they [trash cans/electrical boxes] don't qualify on their own but the artwork on them certainly can."
It's easy to imagine, though, that someone would choose trash can or utility box as the category when submitting the artwork. Thus I would hope that the next screen would be, "This does not meet acceptance criteria, but artwork on the object is eligible."
And yeah, I've seen a ton of undecorated utility boxes and trash cans in Wayfarer.
I doubt this is for filtering submissions at all, but purely data collection for Niantic.
^ This.
Being
forcedtold to compulsorily choose a "What is it?" category when you are reviewing a nomination, only to get someone trying to do any sort of edit to it and the 'What is it?' category is blank and optional again never sees the light of day. This feature would be extremely helpful to find nominators who nominate abusive things over and over. If they nominate something like a playground and the categories specifically say playground: yes
school property/childcare facility yes or no? And submitter selects no. If its found that this is not true it should be very easy for niantic employees to determine if the nominator is simply falsifying nominations in abusive ways to try and get it in the game
