Fire destroys shrine dedicated thinker to End of Edo period

Possibility of arson

[31/12/2014 11:55]

A fire broke out at a shrine in Ota City,

Gunma Prefecture. The police are investigating a possible arson attack at the historic shrine,

which is dedicated to a thinker at the end of the Edo period.

At around 8 p.m. on the 30th, the priest of Takayama Shrine in Ota City called 119 to report that the shrine building was on fire.

The fire was extinguished about four hours later,

but the main hall and the hall of worship, about 250m2, were completely destroyed.

At the time of the fire, four members of the priest's family were cleaning the grounds away from the main shrine,

and were not injured. As there was no sign of fire in the building,

the police believe that someone may have set the fire.

The shrine has a history of about 140 years.

The shrine is dedicated philosopher who was an influential figure in the movement to expel the Emperor at the end of the Edo period. In October,

a fire broke out at Nitta Shrine, about 1km away, and police are investigating the connection.

Arson at Takayama Shrine in Ota, 59-year-old man admits to charges at first trial

The first hearing of the jury trial of Kazuo Ichikawa, 59, an unemployed man from Takabayashi-Kita-machi,

Ota City, who set fire to the shrine of Takayama Shrine in Honmachi, Ota City,

on 30 December 2014 and burnt it down, was held on 25 October 2016 at Maebashi District Court (Judge Yoshiko Noguchi).

There is a Google Street View taken by me in the area in 2018/09 after the arson incident.

The wooden shrine building was burnt down and only the foundation stones remain.

Incidentally, here is a blog with photos of the shrine buildings taken a month before the arson incident occurred.

And here are two street views as of 05 December 2021.

Please also have a look at the following street view

This was taken in July 2019.

You can see that in July 2019 there was already one small, temporary shrine building in place.

Today I have photographed this small temporary shrine from close by, and the photo is shown below.

Let's take a look at the actual Wayspot photos with me.

(A),(C):

A photo that must have been taken before 30 December 2014. The building before it was set alight and burnt down.

(B),(E):

The photo was taken somewhere in the period between the destruction of the shrine by arson in December 2014 and the placement of the new shrine in July 2019.

(D):

A completely different building.

Probably Those treated as a duplicated in the Seer or early Wayfarer! era.

(F):

The small temporary shrine, now installed, is shown in the photo.

I have also taken a street view of the building in (D).

It is located 50m away from the subject Wayspot and is a completely different building.

It is called the Shrine Office and it was not damaged by the arson attack.

From the above, it can be proved that only one photograph should be preserved, the one listed as "(F)" in the above diagram.
