And here I am, in Germany, where even perfect trail markers get rejected over and over again on a daily basis. This is ridiculous.

Good luck. From what we clearly can see is Niantic won’t accept them themselves, vaguely made them eligble once upon a time and won’t remove them for prp or pedestrian access.

that’s why they’re repeatedly submitted. Win win for the players of all games.

@HaramDingo-ING Nice job, demonstrating. Otherwise, it's kind of hard to imagine, from halfway around the world, where such things are VERY unlikely to pass, so have not reached popularity, nor manic nominating.

Well, I think I'll have success to some degree - I'm no stranger to appealing invalid wayspot appeals on the forums. I won't bother with the ones on the kerb and all that, but there are some submissions that are so brazen that the marker and the actual POI is literally on the road. PRP ones might be harder to remove than ones for pedestrian access, but I'll go for the low hanging fruit first. As much as I like more pokestops, it needs to be quality candidates.

@TooLegitToExist-ING et al, bringing this over from the totally irrelevant Niantic is Making Location Edits to Improve Map Quality Thread.

I'm sure you're aware of my invalid wayspot reporting capabilities and that I can be industrious when I want to be. I need a fresh challenge because it is impossible to prove to Niantic that the Appalachian Trail does not pass through Turramurra, New South Wales.

There is a small network of Permanent Survey Markers approved and live in-game in Mango Hill, Queensland. There's also whatever the hell this is. These are local in your state, the former probably under half an hour's drive. I'd like to see those removed first. Piece of cake, right?

At the moment, I am highly indifferent about reporting these marks because we have a genius who has double-submitted about sixty survey marks and a couple of braggers who have appealed such rejections and got them approved by Niantic. If they were to be all removed, I could see every single survey mark hit the Wayfarer voting queues and jam up the system again if simply removal is the only action taken and nothing done to any submitter or approver.

It will simply be a band-aid solution.

A plug for anyone who wants more context about "survey markers". Abuse is in the eyes of the beholder.

  • I agree. Niantic Wayfarer will become super boring if we keep reviewing State Survey Mark again and again, again and again

My favourite topic - I look forward to the diatrabe against me and the dislikes.

    These fail most criteria

At best Niantic say they can be used to mark trails etc where no other marker exists. I exclude a decent geodetic marker (see below).

Otherwise there is nothing. Absolutely nothing about SSMs that makes them interesting, places to socialise, to go explore or exercise.

They are generic. Globally so. they are mass produced. You can buy packets of the disks used to make marks by the thousands. They are used from railway marks, cemetary marks, by utility companies and the list goes on.

these are not in the hundreds but the hundreds of thousands. Most ( as in the vast majority) are on the road build if not in the road.

to discern ANY level of uniqueness you more often than not will need to get on your hands and knees to see the number is different. The number. These are rarely interesting to the vast majority of people (though there are dedicated niche groups into them (if that is your thing). Certainly any level of uniqueness with a differing number is lost in the sheer scale of these nominations and their very genericness. My opinion I know. But yeah not really unique and only interesting to a sub niche of people (in the grand scheme of things).

Did you know - Survey marks can have up to 8 sequential numbers. That is how many of them there are.

Do I accept marks? Sure. Trig stations are awesome. Out in the country areas there are Star Pickets. Some are even heritage listed. They make great waypoints. A reference tree in rural Australia (love to see one). the older Alignment Marks (an old form of Cadastral marks) are interesting from a historical perspective. There is a great one in Victoria that is a Cairn. Smart enought to find PM 56546 - that was the original PM1 in the City of Sydney.

There are that many marks just in the city of sydney it took 4 years to map. Though probably because people had removed some of them (road crews are very good at this) but naughty naughty as it is illegal to interfere with marks. They now inspect all marks every 5 years and have a business plan to manage them.

Gosh. Listen to me. Sounds like I like ém... Only the right context for this game. And in general - based on my thoughts above - they are the original epic fail.

Now to be fair. People are working the system for their own ends. The system has allowed it. Good for you and good for them. Respect all round. Not my thing.

I am only saying that based on Niantics criteria. They fail acceptance in nearly in every case.

Now you can beat me up ;-)

Wasnt there a clarification about those survey markers after the criteria challenge -->

    https://community.wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/discussion/35560/wayfarer-criteria-challenge#latest

    see the text below

Survey markers… of course they came up hehe So these were also heavily discussed by the team. While we understand that these are super generic in some parts, in others, they are very unique. From our experience, we’ve seen these to be placed at the peaks of mountain trails, historically significant areas, etc. While in other areas, they are overproduced and not interesting at all, similar to the one shown below. Now, if there is an interesting or historical story to the survey marker, by all means nominate it and make sure to add that to the title, description, and/or the supporting information. This one in particular didn’t have that and seemed to be the size of a coin along the ledge of the street without pedestrian access.

Apologies for the digression. This title always looks like NSFW state survey markers to me.

Not Suitable For Wayfarer obviously :)

    Carry on, good luck.
