Commenting on Rejections
Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, just curious to know who, if anyone, reads the comments you leave when doing reviews. When I reject a nomination I try to always include a comment into why I've come to that conclusion. Do these go anywhere? Get read by anyone? Of any use? A waste of time?
Thanks
Comments
Nobody sees them unfortunately.
We know the comments do not get sent to the submitter but I hope they stay in the system for Niantic to review if they want to.
I stopped adding comments unless required because they don’t seem to be much use. I only comment on the rare occasion I reject for abuse now but even that seems to be a waste.
Niantic can view them if they're investigating, but generally they won't be seen by anyone. I still type in the box though as it stops me going too fast.
Same here-and sometimes I reconsider my decision as I do so. I comment as if I were giving feedback directly to the nominator to say why I came to my decision unless it's straightforward. I comment on most rejections and on some acceptances, including where their nomination wasn't actually that good but I can see it is an eligible wayspot from checking.
They stay in the system. If you request your data as part of a GDPR request, you’ll see all your comments on rejections.
Niantic uses them if (1) the nominator appeals the decision, (2) the nominator is accused of abuse, or (3) you, the reviewer, is accused of abuse.
For (2) and (3), comments could be checked even if THIS nomination isn't the one in question. All comments could be part of a character assessment of the accused.
I leave a comment on all rejections. And on some 5 star pois especially if they are places I want to go to and see. Slow and cautious intential reviewing - trying hard to get any submission over the line if possible. Even leaving links from google search results.
For example the last review I did was a plaque on the right side of a gate. The plaque on the left side of the gate was an already existing poi. It's likely that a person being less cautious would designate the nomination a duplicate.
I left a note saying as such.
To be honest most people nominating things are doing their best. I too have have submitted with bad spelling and bad photos and things that really should not have been nominated in the first place - (graffitti in the pavement - sigh - what was I thinking)
But am I a typical reviewer?
But you are away the nominator does not see these comments, right?
For those commenting that Niantic uses them, do you know that for sure? I wrote a comment on a fake submission, but the submission still made it into the game easily. (I saw it appear in the game only a day or two after I flagged it.)
Lol yes I do know they don't come though to the submitters. If it were so someone must have said something about my almost 500 nominations decisions.
1) Reviewing is very hard for me to do ... I don't like making judgements on people's efforts, sometimes I can't work out if it is a poi or not. I'm super familiar with most categories and comfortable assessing those but other categories I'm not so familiar with.
The act of commenting helps me be comfortable with my decision.
2) If Niantic sees reasoning they can get a feel for why people are saying things don't work about the nomination.
I too have had that experience where I flagged a face and it still came through. But I still do comment.
Niantic can use them, it doesn't strictly mean that they will.
Man I wish comments went through to the nominator. Not only would good commentary help the nominator learn and refine their submissions - unlike the overbroad and often-inaccurate drop-down rejection reasons - but also help nominators tag reviewers as abusers (the inappropriate reviewers will make themselves known, I assure you).
Yeah but you know some nominators would be cruel or crass and ruin it for everyone.
I wish Niantic did an aggregate diagnosis on them. Like, if a lot of people say some variation of "Thumb in picture", Niantic could add that to a dropdown of responses. THAT nominator wouldn't get it, but in the future, other nominators could.
Thumb in picture shouldn’t be a reason for rejection
Currently its part of the rejection criteria for low quality photo, body part. I've had a handful of rejections due to a poor quality of the photo. Now that we can upload our photos I just crop out my thumb if it's in the shot and make sure to take a good photo since we don't have to worry about that pesky ram running out mid submission.
I think you’re misinterpreting. People were literally submitting their body parts (an arm, a leg) so this became a rejection criteria.
I wish all reviews can be read by the submitter. That way if additional review info text is valid they can learn from it. If those text reviews are not valid they can submit an appeal to Niantic.
That is true, but a thumb is still a body part, well at least if attached to a body. And with the ability to submit directly from our devices we are now empowered with the ability to take the best photos we can.
I’m sorry but that is ridiculous. I’m not denying a valid nomination because someone’s thumb is inadvertently in the photo. That’s a minor infraction similar to spelling errors that can be fixed later. Have you seen all the posts about people quitting because they’re valid nominations are being rejected?
"Back in my day"... I'll start with that because this I will be an old timer post. We had a guy in the early days who made sure part of his finger was in each picture he submitted. This was before OPR when Niantic did all the reviews. He did this as his calling card.
Since it is easy to see something like this it should also be easy to fix and avoid. I have seen some fingers in the same area where I review and have thought it could be a signal to other reviewers "Hey this is mine, make sure to pass it." the finger is not just accedently in the picture, it is in focus so it's being held out in front of the camera.
Fine, I’ll deny if the thumb is in focus. But if it’s blurry, I’m giving the benefit of a doubt.
It's dependent on how blatant it is in the picture, if its just at the edge of the picture, I accept, if its like taking up the corner, I reject
