I logged into Wayfarer and was surprised to see that my upgrade was used. Is this a potential bug?

If you earn an upgrade, it will automatically be applied to a random nomination. You can mark one of your nominations as "upgrade next" which will remove the randomness and ensure that the marked nomination will receive your next upgrade.
If you have no nominations when you receive an upgrade, that upgrade will be banked, and will be used once you do have a nomination for it to be applied to.
EDIT: there's now an option in your Wayfarer settings menu to turn off automatic upgrades. This makes it so that an upgrade will only be applied if you select the upgrade option on it.
it's not a bug, but now there has been a helpful update for you: you can now turn off automatically applied upgrades in the settings section of your wayfarer account.

unfortunately we have discovered that "upgrade next" and upgrading nominations that are currently "in voting" is no longer available with this new update
