Just don’t be forgetting that you haven’t yet fully launched Transformers: Heavy Metal or Peridot globally yet Niantic.
That's not an IP I would have predicted they would make a map based AR game out of. Anyway, let's get the betting pool ready for how long it will last.
'Adrienne O’Keeffe, the NBA’s vice president for global partnerships, said the league and Niantic began discussing a collaboration about five years ago'
'The game will use a database of “hundreds of thousands” of real-life courts and other basketball-playing locations; players will also find stops at sporting goods stores or convenience stores, Matthews said.'
Hey, remember all those times you put “basketball court” in the “What is it?” section? Here’s why.
I for one can't wait to '**** some hoops' at the Victoria Regina postbox on Corblimey Avenue and pick up some rad sneakers from the South Downs nature reserve trail marker #7...
Nope.
Matthews said you have to be at real-world courts to play with others. But he acknowledged that many communities may not have locations that are conveniently located. In that case, real-world parks might serve as substitutes for the competition locations.
Just a bit of British sarcasm since Basketball isn't that big a sport here :)
Ah, should have spotted that as a fellow Brit. Just to bring in further “Britishness”, can you let me know what accent to expect when we get to the 26th Doctor? 😆
Northern :)
I'm sure this will be predicted to fail by Go players but is it more importantly for Niantic another step along their AR path and what can or can't be acheived with it?
Granted this is not a wayfarer subject at all but seriously? I wonder what type of focus groups NIA goes to for these ideas? AR basketball? Toss your phone to make a basket! Dribble it to get your step count in for the day!
Why is it not a Wayfarer subject? You need to ensure you’re not making game references in what you submit, and may want to know where your Wayspots could appear. So now you know they may appear in this new game.
I think it is. I find it interesting how they are using and applying Lightship.
I think Niantic want people, companies to use their database. I mean I don't think this game was Niantic inspired rather they have the tools for others to use.
It will be interesting to see how Lightship is used in this game since it doesn't seem to rely as much on existing poi? Also how they implement AR and mapping a game onto the real world and/or the real world onto a game.
Sounds good. Lots of planets have a north.
No interest in the game itself, but from the Wayfarer side, I'm kind of curious to see what kind of job Niantic does of identifying "basketball courts" and "parks" given that wayspot categorization has only been a relatively recent addition. I have a feeling there are going to be more than a few questionable inclusions and exclusions.
Based on my Lightship experience with AR Voyage (available in the store) and reading the article on polygon.com, my prediction is that the involvement with wayspot will not be as high as Ingress, and will be about the same or lower than Pokémon GO. (mainly to get items).
The game could be applied to throwing snowballs in a circle as shown in AR Voyage.
In the game against the other player, you can **** the ball into the basketball goal in the same way as in Harry Potter.
I can't quite imagine how to acquire a basketball player.
If you throw a basketball at them, they would be angry, unlike Pokémon.
This made me laugh! I like that. But the real-world possibility is that if you throw a basketball at them, you're really passing the ball to them and they'll throw a three-pointer and boom, you get the assist!
I think Pokemon also do not like having spherical metal balls thrown at them either...
I’ll note this one here too.
All of these games are like something that would be made in a 30 Rock-esque show about a game dev company
I’m guessing they have been holding off until the worst of the pandemic was done and now they want some return on investment.
and still no transformers lol ? now we hear about 2 new games... funny
Please choose different dates for the corresponding C-Days! The same day for PoGO, Ingress and Pikmin is already very time consuming and stressful!
Well there's a reason for that if this Bloomberg article is to be believed:
It seems not everything is quite so rosy at Niantic HQ. I hope the Wayfarer team aren't affected by this and I feel sorry for those who have lost their jobs.
I guess we know why Wayfarer seems to be running on a beleaguered skeleton crew.
So Transformers follows Catan and Pikmin might follow Harry Potter?
Sorry for the people that worked on those projects.
yes, Niantic is cutting TF:Heavy Metal after already canning Catan and Harry Potter: WU.
Pikmin surely will follow soon. I also think that John Hanke will downsize Wayfarer even more. Basicly, he doesnt put an effort in this since many years.
I can’t image how Niantic could cut off Wayfarer and stay in business when Wayfarer manages their map and everything they want to do with the company runs off that map.
They nominally aspire to make lightship their big selling point but in practice they're just the pokemon go company. Actually improving lightship doesn't seem to be a priority. Most people outside of this forum probably have no idea of how bad the database which must be how they can keep inking deals for these new games.
ah yes,,, heavy metal wont come out.. explains the long silence realy and that game was supposed to be out end of last year and they still did the same as with catan.. seems routine now to announce and hype game, then rls it in 4 -5 countries closed beta test for a year.. whats the point...
but soon this campfire app is supposed to come....
The Campfire app is already available for iOS users via TestFlight.
