Fairland Basketball Court Approval Question
Hello all, I had my first nomination approved 3 days ago, which is very exciting I got an email saying it was approved and that it would show up in 48 hours. 72 hours later, I'm still not seeing it. I noticed a lot of people in the forums talking about a cell range and ingress? I'm not sure exactly what all of that means, but was hoping to get some clarity on all of this. I've seen many places with 5-6 pokestops/gyms stacked on top of each other, so I'm not sure why my approval wouldn't become a pokestop? I'm attaching a picture for your convenience. It may just be that I'm impatient, but would like to hear everyone's thoughts and learn a little more about how things work. Thanks!

Niantic has never acknowledged it, but for GO they use a grid system called S2 cells. When you use cells or boxes to define the world, you can have small boxes (level 17) and large boxes made up of those smaller ones (level 14). (The whole world fits into a single level 1 box.)
GO only allows 1 POI per level 17 box/cell to show up in the game. So if you placed that POI in a cell that already had a stop or a gym, it is "there", the game just won't use it. The only time you'd see it is if the existing POI was removed. Then your POI would now be the only one in that cell and it would show up.
There are tools you can use to see the cells/grid overlay and the game map of POI. I'd go to the Wayfarer Discord or Reddit to find them. I like the Ingress Map and POGO Tools. The only caveat is that sponsored POI from GO don't show up on that map. So you won't see Starbucks or Circle K stops/gyms.
Niantic thinks they are protecting their "secret sauce" by not acknowledging all of this. In truth, we all know about it. So really all they are doing is confusing new people like you which makes many of them give up. I'll never understand that mentality of choosing to loose participants rather than inform people.
Thank you for the feedback! Would you be able to provide a link to this? I don't have ingress, but it sounds like I could use a reddit link to find a map I could use? The pokestop I nominated is in a park with 2 other pokestops, so I'm guessing it is sharing another "cell" like you talked about above, but would like to have that validated before I give up hope on seeing this turn into a pokestop haha.
Definitely wish they would clarify this. I used an upgrade on this and was so happy to see it turned into a pokestop. This is a very small town so I was excited about the idea of getting more pokestops in the area.
The address for this Pokestop is Fairland Community Park, 209 Commercial St, Fairland, IN 46126, USA in case that helps anyone look it up and give me clarity on it. Thanks!
You’re not nominating a PokéStop though, despite what the game says. You’re nominating a Wayspot to be added to Niantic’s database which may become a PokéStop depending on the map.
As for your nomination. It’s in the same cell as “Fairland Park playground” and within 20m of it as well so it is not showing up on Ingress either, so an Ingress map wouldn’t show it.
It may show on Pikmin Bloom/Transformers: Heavy Metal/Peridot/NBA All World though.
Is it not more that it's a bit of a catch 22?
Nominate poi for the lightship database to see it appear in your favourite game unless it doesn't meet criteria for that favourite game which we can't tell you about because then you won't nominate if you know it's not in your favourite game...
But it doesn't matter.
1) Most of us already know the rules of the game we play and choose whether or not to nominate based on those rules.
2) Those who don't know and get burned STOP NOMINATING FOREVER so not even the game they play gets new POI.
Niantic is far better off sharing the rules with new players and letting them see the cells easily so everyone can just make good choices right up front. This is 2022. How have they not learned that transparency is the best policy?
Surely the right choices are, if you see something that you think meets criteria and would make a good addition to the growing number of Niantic games, you nominate it?
Not got the time for messing with invisible cell lines to ensure something appears in one game.
Niantic could do better in explaining that you’re nominating a Wayspot, not a Portal/PokéStop, during the process but if they do say publicly about the cells it opens it up to even more abuse than there’s been already in my view.
I think if they were clearer that you’re nominating a Wayspot and it may not appear in all games (the acceptance email is almost there on this, the submission email could be better) then people will feel less burned out if their nomination doesn’t appear in the game they play (should they only play one game).
I generally agree with this. I think Niantic needs to be more transparent in the nominating process, but putting cell lines on the map is just an open invitation to every submitter to nudge their submission pin a few meters into the next cell, and there's far too much of that already.
Thank you for the appeal @Dudetardd-PGO While some nominations may be deemed eligible on Niantic Wayfarer for inclusion into Niantic’s location database, they may not necessarily be added into every Niantic game. After a nomination is approved by reviewers, there is an additional automated review that determines whether the nomination is an appropriate fit for each particular Niantic game. Each game has its own set of criteria for this step, so some nominations may be accepted into one game but not another.
@SeaprincessHNB-PGO i fully agree with you.
I have a general ethos of openness and although at times it can feel tricky in the long term I find it is better.
I think that this forum only sees a tiny fraction of the confusion and frustration that players feel when having been spurred on to try and improve the game board where they are, put the effort in, find they also need to review (and because of the need for judgement across different cultures etc that is not easy) the outcome is not what they understood would happen. From players I meet the general view is that having tested the water wayfarer is a confidence trick and walk away. Who can blame them ? You need a different mindset and determination to find a way through.
There needs to be more openness a commitment to a learning cycle and communication needs a vast improvement. Without openness the depth of understanding will go nowhere and every day we will need to yet again explain.
Did you make a location edit on this? I can now see it showing up on the Intel map and it should also appear on Pokémon GO. Still had my nap on that area.
Map even. Though it’s clear I could do with a nap.
