Question about Chains in the UK
I was under the impression chains weren’t eligible but I’ve just had a Wetherspoon pub come up which is a pub chain in the UK
was it actually eligible to be a waypoint?

Generic business or chain has recently been removed from the rejection criteria page for what it's worth. That's not to say that all things that previously fell under that category are now eligible of course, but reviewers should probably now view them with a bit more of an open mind.
Regarding Wetherspoons specifically, I may not like them as a company (I won't go into why as it's not really relevant here, but my local one has influenced how I feel about them as a whole), but lots of people do use them as their local pub and go there to socialise.
That makes sense. Thank you
I worked for them for quite a long time and completely agree with your sentiment on them btw.
"Generic Business" was removed as a rejection in January 2021, because reviewers used it to try to tell nominators that the object was generic (like a street lamp), which was confusing, AND the reason ended up getting overused. https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en/21-wayfarer/faq/2811-niantic-wayfarer-november-2020-ama/?s=how-to-review-wayspots&f=reviewing-a-wayspot-nomination&p=web
However, now, on appeals rejected, Niantic will say, "The object in question does not meet the Wayfarer criteria as it is generic". So it's definitely still a consideration.
When I google "Wetherspoon Pub UK", I see that they have 925 locations. That is a lot. (If there were, say, 30, we might be in a grey area.) Google also returns me "The Ten Most Beautiful Weatherspoons" - so a nominator might use that article to prove that THIS Weatherspoons is special enough for a wayspot. Other than that, I'd say an ordinary Weatherspoons wayspot shouldn't have passed. It just snuck in, and the voting was probably close at that.
In the UK, literally every pub is a POI because people socialise in them.
People rejecting them are the usual 'reject Everything' serial rejectors that plague the system
I'm on the fence with weatherspoons, I like their new pizzas, but hate the owner lol. As for accepting them, I always used then as an argument for when people didn't want to accept chain gyms. At the end of the day though, generic chain doesn't matter as much as meeting the social criteria imo so thats why I would accept that and Any pub really
I've got no problem with generic chain pubs being approved, but there are a few UK reviewers who say every pub is a great place to socialize and then post on here to tell people to reject chain gyms or every cafe is a generic businesses. Just hoping for some consistency.
(Not referring to all UK reviewers or anyone on this post, to be clear.)
Don’t see any problem with it. I’m from the UK myself and I’ve seen many a Weatherspoon wayspot. I’ve even nominated one!
a pub in the UK is probably something like a restaurant in Europe. they get in with no problem. companies in private homes are also going through, although very hard
You must be kidding. There's nothing harder than getting a restaurant accepeted.
depends on where and with what photos you add. everything I submitted was accepted.
Well said!
