Deleted Waypoints - Any chance to get to know why?
Two Waypoints I added got deleted (not visible in Ingress, PoGo or IITC) although they meet the criteria, were at the right spot and have been in the games for around 1,5 - 2 years. They were located at a graveyard. One was a monument for 3 former pastors of the city between the end of the 19th Century and middle of the 20h Century
the other one was a cross or maybe an old tombstone in the outer wall of the local graveyard. According to some information I collected it is at least 200 years old and is referring to a local/historic famous person.
There are still other waypoints at the graveyard that didn't get deleted so it doesn't seem to be a complaint about Waypoints at the graveyard, otherwise all of them would have been deleted. Right?
Is there any chance to get to know, why these Waypoints got deleted?
Comments
Someone reported them?
Someone claiming to be family reported them? I cannot see why they'd just get removed with no feedback.
Then again, this is Niantic we're talking about; change their minds about things more often than a regular person changes their undies.
It’s possible the owner of the cemetery requested deletion.
I thought about this either, but why would they delete only a few and not all of them?
Maybe they're within 40m (131ft) of a single family residence, and the homeowners complained?
Maybe they're too close to a recently used spot? An old family plot had some unused space, and a descendant was recently interred - and survivors were disturbed by strangers staring at their phones?
Can you search the local newspaper for mention of this cemetery? Maybe something made the news? Vandals msybe?
I guess it’s possible someone edited their location to another occupied cell?
Thanks for answering @all.
Occupied cell: 2 at the same time? I don't think so, at least the monument is clearly visible at GoogleMaps. No one should have accepted that.
Vandalism: No that I know, other players living there didn't tell mehr anything about it, so I guess no.
Complaints: I don't know, maybe the best guess but still a guess. That's why I asked if there's a chance to get some official information about it. I didn't get an email or anything.
How many other wayspots are in the cemetery?
It's possible someone reported and only 2/3, 2/4 etc were removed.
I don't think it's possible to find out for sure though
The only people that get an email when a Wayspot is removed are the ones that reported it.
Your only hope to get an explanation is that @NianticGiffard or another employee steps in and provides it.
Cemetery locations are some of the most sensitive POIs and most commonly-reported for removal, in addition to being in remarkably poor taste as a place to play video games. Be glad you had them for a little while, but don’t get hung up on their removal and don’t nominate any more in graveyards.
Some cemeteries are city parks, with events, trails, tours, etc. Like Oakland in Atlanta: https://oaklandcemetery.com/#
I know that waypoints on cemeterys are very controversal, although I think as long as the Waypoint isn't the tombstone of a recently died person it should be okay. Ironically there are some 8 to 9year old Waypoints exactly as I just described and they are still there...
@NianticAaron rather than editing OP's post, why don't you give clarification about what's happened to the removed Wayspot?
So... Nothing new after 6 more weeks?
Hello @NianticAaron ?
Awesome... Great communication by Niantic as always.
Hello @NianticAaron , you do remember the post you've edited, didn't you?
Hello all,
These Wayspots were in violation of our policies and as a result, they were removed. We stand by our decision to remove them.
Best,
Thanks for the answer, but now I didn't learn anything new.
How and why are these violating your policies? I thought if they were old enough (read something about 50years+) and regarding to famous (local) people they are eligible. Did this change?
