Can I improve this Nomination?

Hi,

I'm getting quite despondent about adding wayspots when they always seem to get rejected for crazy reasons so would like some help please on what I can do to improve my nominations.

Case in point is my most recent rejection. Can anyone suggest what I did wrong so I don't repeat the error?

I'm not sure if it was rejected as a joke, flagging this bridleway as a "Temporary or Seasonal Display" because it has only been a bridleway for 70 years.

When you get "Other Rejection Criteria", it means reviewers doesn't think this meets any of the acceptance criteria: social, exercise, explore. See https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/new/criteria/eligibility When there's another rejection reason (in this case, Temporary or Seasonal) that means one reviewer accidentally clicked that (maybe the sun was bright on their phone, or their cat walked across the keyboard) OR Niantic just threw it in to try to confuse cheating bots.

I'm not from the U.K., but doesn't bridleway mean horses, not pedestrians? Does the sign just mean it's something between a sidewalk and a road (in other words: infrastructure)? I think only named hiking trails pass. Hopefully a Brit will jump in to help with the local knowledge.

When one rejection reason doesn't make sense, it's best to ignore it. It could be a mis-click, trolling, or Niantic inserting random rejection reasons (because apparently they do that?).

Your "real" rejection reason is "Other Rejection Criteria". This means that reviewers don't think it's "a great place to explore, exercise, or socialize". I'm not from the UK, so I'm not sure what a bridalway is. I know there's a lot of debate among UK reviewers exactly which types of trails count as trails, so I'll let one of them clarify if bridalways will always be rejected or if there's some way for you to improve this one.

Public bridleway are pedestrian and horses. You can cycle on them too.

I think most reviewers don't classify these as trails at the moment so you'll probably struggle to get it through @GreenOakSteve-PGO

From the recent Criteria Challenge. This was referencing public footpaths but there's not that much difference between the two in terms of what they are signposting

Hiking trails and markers make great Wayspots. This includes urban footpaths and routes intended for pedestrian use. However, this doesn't mean they should all be accepted. We’re happy to add some clarification to these as they are clearly a great place to be social and they spark exploration. Below you’ll find some details that we hope will help as you review similar types of nominations.

    • These types of trail markers are definitely eligible Wayspots. They look official because of the country plates or have the trail names on them, love that! *** We would also love to see what is interesting about this trail. Was it the first trail in the area, does it highlight specific wildlife local to this region? All of this would help make it much easier to rate higher. The second point that comes to mind is how many of these trail markers are there? Are they distinguishable and far enough apart that it doesn’t make the others any less unique? For the second photo, while it may look like a street sign (which are not eligible Wayspots), it’s important to make sure it’s a footpath or trail maker during review.

    *** Plot twist, they don't.

    Hello and welcome.

    I like your description etc

and yes a bridleway is fine as it is a good place to exercise.

However as the sign does not relate to this specific route it will be a hard to get approved. Is there another sign that says college ride?

is there a link to show this trail

  • Thanks for that, I honestly thought I must have written something that made a reviewer think the route was not permanent.

As others have explained a bridleway is simply a path that is big enough for it to be safe to ride horses on which means it is usually pretty easy going for walking.

  • Thank you

Sadly there is no sign that says this route is part of College Ride. We don't get many signs or markers on our routes up here, quite possibly because there are just too may of them across the common and Swinley Forest.

A few years ago I did a lot of digging through old maps to find some of the old roads in the area that were closed when the Free French were based up here in World War 2 and then lost when the estate was built. This one was relatively easy as it was just finding the link between College Ride and Upper College Ride. And then I discovered 2 weeks ago that it has been listed on openstreetmap 😆

@GreenOakSteve-PGO nice bit of digging and use of old maps - https://maps.nls.uk/ covers U.K.

You could try using A screenshot of an old map (or OSM) that has college ride on it as the supplementary photo. Say in the supplementary info why you have done this, and that the path start is easily seen on streetview (which it is)

avoid using the word road it detracts from the fact that it is a woodland trail

Because there is no name you need to try putting across that this is an anchor for the whole trail.

If you need to upgrade try to do so at weekend when there is a wide range of reviewers.

you could try appealing as Niantic tend to view these more positively.

    Good Luck

Niantic seem to be happy with these if there is enough info to make it interesting and worthwhile for exploring. You probably have that with the WW2 stuff, it's location, Penny Hill Park and it's history etc @GreenOakSteve-PGO

Reviewers not so much. You could spend time getting the description, support correct to show why your nomination is a good submission and still be rejected because it's a public bridleway sign.

Good luck. I definitely wouldn't pin my hopes on appeal either. I've had a national named trail rejected by Nia on appeal.

I’ve just had a bridleway trail approved, but it did have a named trail on the signs.

Maybe ask around locally if signage could be improved. There are various rider groups that help maintain bridleway trails.

  • Thanks for all the helpful comments. I had a second attempt at it and had another ridiculous rejection reason so am just going to give up on it and will wander round looking for boring trail markers as people seem to like approving those.

Generic UK Public Right of Way sign - not eligible - 1* easy rejection for "Does not meet criteria"

  • Elijustrying-INGElijustrying-ING Posts: 5,507 Ambassador

    @GreenOakSteve-PGO

The lack of the trail name is the issue.

I agree it’s not worth another upgrade, but you could try appeal.

  • Thanks but I don't think I'll bother, folks obviously don't like the idea.

The upgrade was an unintentional accident - I hadn't flagged anything for next upgrade 😕

@GreenOakSteve-PGO - have you got the automatically assign upgrade feature toggled to off in settings.

you can let upgrades pile up until ready to assign.
