Why are my Portal nominations appearing in Pokémon Go and my PokéStop nominations in Ingress?
Hi, I'm really confused about what I'm nominating. In Ingress, it seems like I'm nominating Portals and in Pokémon Go it seems like I'm nominating PokéStops, but my nominations keep appearing in both games!
I even submitted a nomination for a Portal in Ingress and another for a PokéStop in Pokémon Go. The PokéStop got marked as a duplicate and is showing up with my Portal nomination instead.
I think you'll understand my confusion.
It's very clear I'm choosing the location for a Portal:
And I'm taking a photo of a Portal:
I took a photo of the Portal:
I'm showing that the Portal location is safe:
I give the Portal a title:
I describe the Portal:
Very clearly a Portal nomination:
And I tell the reviewers why my Portal is important:
Then I nominate my PokéStop:
I take a PokéStop photo:
I show the area surrounding the PokéStop:
I give my PokéStop a title:
And describe my PokéStop too:
Now, this is where things start to get really weird - instead of categorizing my PokéStop I've categorized a Wayspot?!? What's that?
Anyways, things get back to normal and I explain why my PokéStop is important:
So why do my nominations keep appearing in the wrong games? I wanted to mention in the respective descriptions how great the PokéStop will be for Trainers and how awesome the Portal will be for Agents, but instead all my Ingress references are showing up in Pokémon while all my Pokémon references show up in Ingress!

Try to keep your descriptions or supporting info game-neutral: despite what you see on the submission screens, you're actually submitting a Wayspot to the Lightship database from either game. Lightship is the "source of truth" for in-game objects, and once a Lightship candidate is accepted, games pull the information from that database according to the proximity rules for either game. Many Wayspots will appear in both games: some are too close to an existing spot to sync into Ingress which looks at physical proximity, or they share an S2 L17 cell with another Pokemon Go object and are then blocked from sync into Pogo.
The language on those submission screens is one of the big Niantic failures, in my opinion. They could easily clarify their language and have been called upon to do so many, many times by members of this forum, but it's still "Portal" or "Pokestop" in game.
Each Wayspot should be great for anyone, Agent or Trainer or Geocacher or Hiker or Tourist or Random Pedestrian with a flip-phone. Specific game advantage is not an acceptance criteria, and most experienced reviewers will either ignore "this would make a great Pokestop because lots of foot traffic" or "this would make a great Portal because it would make a great limited-access anchor" -type statements entirely, or even subtract a star. Explain why it's a great point of interest in general, and you'll likely have better luck.
But I don’t want my Portal nominations to appear in Pokémon!
@NvlblNm-PGO Niantic is bad at explaining this but you're submitting wayspots for the central Lightship database. Accepted submissions may or may not appear in Ingress, Pokemon Go, Pikmin Bloom, or any other game that uses Niantic's Lightship database. You don't have any control over which games they appear in.
Come on, don't be too picky. How would Pikmin players get new big flowers and mushrooms in the map then, if it's not because of both Ingress agents or Pokemon GO players?
@NvlblNm-PGO
Hello, I’m sorry you are getting confused and frustrated by Niantic’s poor use of language and inability to communicate effectively.
Thats what what Niantic should respond to posts like yours @NianticAaron @NianticAaron @NianticTintino-ING
@Hosette-ING and @Shilfiell-ING have explained that all submissions are actually game neutral. It’s great that you are keen to submit new locations and get them accepted.
The language you use in the description should be about the point of interest and not about any game. The supplementary information should support that description with extra points that help prove where it is, and why it’s distinctive. If you refer to a game it should just be ignored but some will actually count it against you.
No one gets to choose which games any one wayspot is used in or if it’s used at all in current games. It is all down to a computer algorithm that each game developer has designed.
Take a bit of time to absorb all the information. You might find it easier to do most of your wayfarer contributions in one game. You might submit in one game but use your other game to review. It’s up to you - this part you can control.
That’s the neat part! They don’t!
There haven’t been any new Flowers/Mushrooms added to it since the start sadly.
That’s true! None of my PokéStops or Portals have shown up in Pikmin!
I always assumed that’s because my nominations are very game specific.
If I shouldn’t be talking about how awesome my Portals are for Agents in the description, why do all of them get accepted when Niantic reviews them?
A.
They are less judgemental when it come to criteria and can overlook the odd misstep here and there.
They love populating their games with quality wayspots that a wide range of people can use to create a dynamic and fun space in the metaverse.
or
B.
They don't want to spend the time reviewing correctly, even though you have maybe spent an hour of your time, when there are Twitter posts to look at.
The people they pay to review for them don't know what they are doing.
Less judgmental than whom? The only nominations they’ve rejected are the ones they said are duplicates since I submitted both a Portal and a PokéStop.
I always mention the game I’m submitting for because the instructions tell me to.
The plebian reviewers like you and I who try to apply the criteria and roles they set.
rules*
No, I’m submitting my Portals for Niantic to review, not you.
They’re the ones accepting all my game references. They’re the ones telling me to reference the game I’m nominating for. I just don’t understand why they would keep putting my nominations in the wrong games.
I really love this thread and the replies.
I do too!
Whaaaat!!!
How do I reach the level where my submissions bypass the hoi-polloi reviewers and get vieed by the all knowing Niantic reviewers?
Is there a magical word or phrase that I can use?
I wouldn’t know anything about that, but I do have a problem where all the missing sponsored Starbucks I’ve added to Pokémon are appearing in Ingress. It’s a big part of why I’m finding this so frustrating. Why can’t they put my nominations in the right game?
Have you tried contacting support? I've heard they are really helpful.
Maybe tweet John Hanke too?
I contacted support 3 months ago about an issue and they said they were passing me on to someone who has more knowledge about my problem.
It's a long time to wait but it does mean they are investigating thoroughly I'll get a well thought out and helpful reply I guess.
Give it a try?
Ok I’ll ask.
@NvlblNm-PGO
what makes you sure that Niantic are reviewing all your submissions?
I’m sensing sarcasm here but I can’t be sure. I think they know the nominations can go to either game.
It’s NianticWayfarer, not ElijustryingWayfarer!
@Shilfiell-ING
Explain why it's a great point of interest in general, and you'll likely have better luck.
Not all wayspots are points of interest)), that's OPR. The updated criteria allows less interesting wayspots.
What is a OPR?
Old Pokestop Remnants?
@NvlblNm-PGO
Have you tried using *secret app* ?
It puts little squares on the planet so you can see portals. We can see that the UK currently has about 16 portals ( the little dots) Ireland has lots or one huuuge portal and Spain has about 50 on its beaches.
It won't help you with your problem but you can at least see what is a portal and what is a pokestop already!
Wong screenshot!
OK, to be more specific .... why it's a great place to explore, exercise, or be social.
I also know of quite a few "less interesting" Wayspots from the OPR days or before, but they're all points of interest to someone. Maybe just one very weird person, sure, but someone.
This thread is giving me brain damage.
Jarvis Island?
Is that the secret base of the Enlightened?
I've not played Catan yet... They should release it soon hopefully. I'll join the Enlightened clan when they do.
