I get a badge for checking into a location a certain amount of times
You can select these types of things when making a new nomination on Pokémon GO (related, when do we get this on Ingress?)
So it could be that when you review a certain amount of American Restaurants you get a Bronze Stamp with an Apple pie slice on your Wayfarer profile and then go all the way to Onyx.

I would just have onyx badges for trail markers and notice boards and nothing else
If I don’t have Onyx Mailbox and Onyx Trailmarker when this hypothetical system starts, it’s clearly broken.
