Accidentally set wrong hometown location
As there does not appear to be a subforum for account-related support requests in the "Support and Feedback" section, I hope it is acceptable for this to be posted here, as I've found others posting similar topics in here as well.
So I just created my Wayfarer account, and everything went smoothly. But upon trying to select my hometown location, my phone lagged, and an incorrect position was chosen and confirmed as a result of this.
For the past 2 hours, I've been googling for any means of changing it, or simply reset or delete the Wayfarer account, so that I could create it anew, but alas... There appears to be no means of submitting a support ticket directly to Niantic. (Also, judging by some of the search results, deletion might be risky, as some people appear to have gotten their connected accounts suspended/banned from similar actions... weird stuff.)
I have now landed on this forum, where a few searches seem to indicate that admins here are capable, and willing (one-time courtesy/good will), to fulfill such a request.
If it is not too much of a bother, I would like to request that my "Hometown Location" be reset, please.
Thanks in advance
Regards

If they reset it as a courtesy, remember that the Home Location can only be set once and that's it, it cannot be changed again. If you want it being effective while still not leaving your general playing location, look into what S2 Level 6 cells are and choose a place outside of the center cell within your location and the 8 surrounding ones. or you can set it to your actual home, it will not give you additional or more local reviews though, but be ignored if it is withing your playing location.
For requests on the forums, it is best practice to tag all Niantic employees as otherwise they will ignore you for months. I'll gladly do that for you though!

Appreciate the info. Thanks.
I was considering tagging one of those I've seen respond to another request, though I held back. Over the years, I've come to understand that some communities prefer that one do not tag admins/mods for certain things. Add in that I am currently new in here, I lack a general idea of exactly how active this community is. Other than that, I'm not in a rush, and was well willing to wait for an extended duration, before maybe bumping the request. ^^
I have some familiarity with S2 cells (thanks to some random mention sometime last year), though if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you for some clarification on your info. In particular, the last piece of it.
Are you saying that, if the set Hometown Location and the Actual Location (area where one actively plays) are the same, then the Hometown Location will be ignored by the system? i.e. are you suggesting that I set it to somewhere other than where I play, such as a few towns over or something like that?
Can't say I know the exact sizes of each level of cells. I've googled on occasion, but all I can find are bits and pieces, and no complete map. Found a few posts on Reddit, which appears to contain guides on how to map an area by oneself, but for now, that seems like a gateway to even more confusion.... (Would be nice if Google Maps had an option to add an overlay... heh.)
This response kinda feels scrambled and incomplete, and attempts to unscramble it were a bit unsatisfying, but I'm hungry... Will see if I can't rephrase some of it later.... maybe.
The best source is to have an ingress account - any level. This gives access to an accurate map of all the ingress portals.
IITC-CE ( I think that’s what goes under now) is an add on that overlays the key PokemonGo cells Level 14 and 17. You can then tag each as a pokestop or gym. Unfortunately it is now not totally reliable as it is possible for a wayspot to be in Pokémon Go and not Ingress.
that's still at least 80 % of all wayspots though to through a random estimated number in
I would have recommended sidewalklabs, but they took their site down! It was so convenient and easy to use...
Next better option I know would be pogomap.info and set cells there.
@TTRM-PGO yes my suggestion would be to set it away, otherwise your home location has no effect
This is an example how this looks on pogomap.info with Stuttgart, Germany as the center cell:
As a rough estimate you should make sure your hometown location is set to at lest 200km/150mi from your current play location.
Sorry, you're just going to have to move to that town. That's easier than changing your Wayfarer settings.
As a wayfarer you make a commitment not to move for the rest of your life. Didn't you read the fine print?
Imagine if the hometown pin was 'misplaced' to somewhere in the middle of Atlantic Ocean.
Very helpful ^^ Had completely forgotten about pogomap. Been a while since I visited that one.
Took a bit of time for the cell grid to load (and at first, I wasn't even sure if it was working at all), but this is exactly the type of info I've been looking for on previous searches. ^^ (Guess I either missed that setting in the Tools menu previously, or that it simply wasn't there when last I checked...)
Funny enough, if the grid was shifted just 15km eastwards, then I'd be on the border of a lvl 6 cell...
So if I've understood things correctly, it would be advisable to place the marker on the opposite side of this border (in any direction).
It does feel a bit wrong to do so though.
Actually, the map was too far zoomed out when the marker was misplaced, so it landed on the giant, red spot on Jupiter.... Time to pack my bags, I guess.
But who knows.... Maybe Elgyem, Inkay and Deoxys roam free there, being as common as Rattata elsewhere. ;p
You're almost there!
"So if I've understood correctly, it would b advisable to place the marker on the opposite side of this border (in any direction)." Sounds to me like you only looked at one, single S2 Level 6 cell. You'd need to be outside of any cell that touches the one within your location though.
This means for this example where central london would be your centre cell, that you'd need to set your location outside of any cell with a red slash on it. So you basically, in this example, you might just set it to somewhere in Scotland, for example Glasgow oder Edinburgh, or anywhere you want, just not within the slashed cells.
If you think you'll ever move though, you can juts choose your current home, which is the intended way.
Hey @TTRM-PGO,
Welcome to Wayfarer. I have reset your Hometown and you should be able to set it to a location of your choice.
Happy Exploring,
I see.... Guess I misunderstood ever so slightly previously.
2+ cells out from center cell (or 3+ in the event that one happened to live/play on the center cross between 4 cells....)
Thanks for the clarification ^^
Still, though, "advantages" aside, I can't help but feel that doing so would be somewhat wrong. iirc, from what I read when signing up, the location chosen should be an area one is well familiar with, so that one can accurately evaluate submissions (or something like that). I'll have to think about this for a bit, before deciding whether to place it accurately or not.
Either way, thanks for all the info. Whether I dive deep into this, or end up abandoning (for whatever reason), the information you've supplied me served to give me all the S2-related info I was previously missing. ^^
Neat. Thanks for responding and acting so quickly. ^^
Accidental double post. Servers were borking when I tried to respond this morning.
Would delete it now if I could, but this doesn't appear to be an option on this forum.
