2 Upgrades Lost to same point of interest submission that was recently approved

Hello, I've worked hard to review points of interests submissions over the years, in particular before it became available to the wider player base on pokemon go (my submissions were primarily through ingress).

I've used two upgrades on the same point of interest, and back in 2019/2020, they were both denied and were not accepted as submissions. Thanks to a 2021 submission that i resubmitted, that same point of interest submission was finally accepted a few weeks back (without going through an upgrade process).

I wanted to know if there was a possibility of getting my 2 upgrades back. I feel i've been unjustly penalized. I've attached the images for the specific submissions not accepted but upgraded, along with a recent accepted one, for the same location.

Is there a way to contact Niantic Wayfarer team on this request?

I think that’ there’s very little chance of getting your upgrade back. Imagine if every nominator requested the same thing… the thing is, you get different reviewers every time. And maybe you made improvements to the nomination. Better description maybe? Even if you didn’t, a lot of nominations do better because they weren’t upgraded. Local reviewers know the area better, they know what is significant for your area. In the future you should probably only use upgrades on “slam dunk” nominations.

    Hello and welcome @BoomBoomDog-PGO

It is deeply frustrating when you use an upgrade and it gets denied. You only do it as you are convinced it’s a good bet for an acceptance - I have had this happen quite a few times. Some of them I have not bothered resubmitting, most I have resubmitted sometimes with another upgrade, but I have also appealed. And yes I have felt robbed at times.

The bottom line is that reviewers will have different opinions, and a wider set of reviewers which is what you get with an upgrade don’t always have the same view of the value of something. The probability is that there will be cases where I have reviewed an upgraded submission(and I look to for good points) and scored it low or not accepted it, based on my judgement and another wayfinder will be disappointed. I have no way of knowing, but like all reviewers I don’t have a 100% agreement rate. So if you have reviewed you are likely to have done the same.

In your case there is also a time difference. Presumably the non-accepted ones from 2019 and 2020 were upgraded fairly soon after submission, and the 3rd successful one took its time with local reviewers. Over that timeframe there may have been shifts in what is considered acceptable in favour of this POI. Can’t be sure but it could be a factor along with local awareness.

In short there are lots of factors that make this a complex area, without a simple solution.

TBH, I think you should just be glad you got it accepted. Based on the small image I can see, I wouldn't have approved that. It looks temporary. It's also not obvious to me what criteria it meets.

Upgrades don’t guarantee an acceptance. Only a decision, which you got the two times you used one.

It was eventually accepted but that doesn’t mean that you didn’t get a decision the previous times.
