How are so many fire houses getting accepted?

I thought fire, ambulance, and police stations were considered blocking emergency access. I’ve now seen four that are already POI with the point right out in front. Is this a new change?

Fire Stations were one of the things pulled from Google Maps in order to seed Ingress with a basic set of portals when it launched in 2012.
Like TheFarix said, Fire Stations were some of the POIs added for Ingress. As Niantic games developed, they realized POIs Fire Stations were not appropriate. If you see a Fire Station, please report it so Niantic will remove from their database.
You are absolutely right.
They used to be eligeble but with the current criteria they are not. Unfortunately the PoI's are not automatically removed when no longer eligeble, so you should report them (can be done ingame or in the forum) when you encounter them.
I had a new one show up on the map that had just gone live recently. Help chat removed it quickly when reported, and "took action" on the submitter. What about those who approved it?
It's crazy.. and to nominate it, it's weird. Is it kids that nominates them? Sometimes I wonder what the .. people are thinking when they upload a nomination.
It's hard to respond generically, when its the details that are important.
The Rejection Criteria is for obstruct emergency services. So if the POI does that it should be reported. But there are plenty of firestations that have memorials, giants bells, and other eligible stuff that could be eligible so long as it doesn't block the fire trucks rolling out.
This has come up with Hospitals and I havent seen anything that holds Fire Stations to a harder standard than Hospitals.
