Just an FYI - I disagreed with the above because I do not think that calling out specific member names for disagreeing with a single-tag, no-body post is in keeping with the community spirit of these fora. That's all. It's not an overall judgement of character, just a difference of opinion.
@Johnsonsine-ING I decline to take the bait, but you are free to continue disagreeing with everything I post and I won't make a fuss about it. Have a lovely day!
Do you mean that instead of providing a simple reply like "Sorry, that's outside of the scope of Wayfarer and you should talk to the Ingress team", they are gonna ban him?
It isn't that hard to show a little respect for their users instead of taking punitive actions.
I'm out of patience and nice behavior. And if I may guide your attention back to the date when this post was originally made. And how many fcks given by Niantic? Hint: It's zero. I don't even care about the game anymore. But thanks for your concern.
And no, I don't normally support the type of online communication I am giving here. But I am so worn out of being ignored with something that is extremely important for me (and others).
Too many disappointments from this company all in all at this point.
Did you contact the DPO already? Because waiting for a response which brings you further on this forum, could be a long wait, and will only frustrate you further.
No, I didn't. I insist on a response as a minimum here. May just be more frustration coming, but this is more than enough work as it is for something that should have never even been an issue.
if it's "extremely important" as you mentioned, you can also try to delete specific photos (to get rid of names) via help chat, explain that privacy can be compromised, etc. Perhaps dpo or ambassadors can help.
Long term - I suspect ingress team won't fix it unless privacy/safety team escalates the issue, but doubt pinging Tintino helps :/
Clearly you do care, otherwise you wouldn't be posting here so much. I appreciate that you acknowledge the optics of how your messages are getting across. We don't know why they're not responding - perhaps they're not authorized to discuss this topic.
If it crosses the line into harassment then there absolutely should be disciplinary action. I'm not saying it is at that point yet. Other people aren't to blame for the choices we make.
@NianticTintino Why do I still have to sit here and answer all kinds of comments from other users, but you and the team are silent still? This is definitely not a topic you can just leave for other users to answer.
Start discussing what you want to do with this and get back to me with a response.
I'm not looking for a social media, I'm looking for a professional that will solve the problem Niantic has made. That is not unreasonable. Not answering me is though.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has actually found any legal reason why this option should be available for Ingress players? Or is this just a case of "unfairness" that the other game has something and the other has not?
I couldn't find or come up with any legal reasons why there should be a possibility to opt-out from one's nickname showing up.
Also, just a thought, if this is game-dependant, could this be also asked at the Ingress forums? Perhaps one could get some kind of a response there. The concerned teams of each game are independent from each other after all.
@ForzaComo-ING I don't believe there is a legal reason for this.
When you sign up to play Ingress you agree that your agent name will be displayed in a variety of ways, including in comms and on resonators and shields deployed in portals. The privacy implications of these things are significantly worse than for having the agent name deployed on a photo. Comm messages display your location in real time. They can and have been used to **** individuals, including me. After a decade of the game being active it's almost certain that comm has been used for actual malice at least once.
Having my agent name on a portal photo lets someone know that I was at that location sometime between a few days ago and ten years ago, which seems way less scary than having comm messages tracking my movements. If I was concerned about people knowing my recent whereabouts because of portal photos then I would just stop submitting portal candidates and photos. I would also stop doing anything that appeared in comms or left my name on a portal (deploying, modding). I would have to stop playing Ingress at known locations for me (home, work) because just seeing missing XM there would be a clue to my location. I don't know what happens to comm scroll after an account is deleted, so the last N days of history might persist past deletion.
If I was highly concerned about privacy I wouldn't be playing Ingress.
Well you shared my thoughts pretty accurately there. And thus this appears as a bit of a storm in a teacup for me.
Ingress shares location data very often when one plays the game, a lot more often than PoGo. It is also an important part of the game. There is strategic value in where a nickname has been, when and doing what in-game stuff. And there is always an option to opt out by NOT doing the stuff that gives away your location.
When it comes to actual harrassment due to game-related actions, that is always something that should be dealt with appropriate authorities. Harrassment, bullying etc. is never because of the game mechanics, but it is because of the people not acting upon the local laws and rules of the game.
Such actions, no matter how inappropriate, should not be used as a sole excuse to change game mechanics.
I find anonymous wayspots a disadvantage and a one big reason when it comes to tackling the growing problem of wayfarer abuse and coal nominations. I can only guess what was the reason behind this, in my opinion short-sighted decision to make it optional to show one's nickname with them.
Honestly, if one has read and understood the terms and rules of nominating a wayspot, and proceeds to make the nomination, one should also be able to come to terms with the fact the nomination, if accepted, bears one's nickname. IMHO the nicknames should be visible in all the games.
I admit that I have opted out in nominating wayspots that I do not want my nickname associated with. Not that I am afraid of being harrassed, but as I take pride in trying to nominating quality wayspots. The fact that my nickname will be stamped in the photo makes me work harder to provide quality to the network of PoIs. And this used to be the common mentality back in the days when only Ingress was used to nominate wayspots.
Nowadays the mentality has turned from quality to quantity where anonymity is a tool to disregard the even low-set quality standards to get yet more quantity.
Wherever I see someone in my local community who has a problem I always like to tell them why they don't have a problem because the problem doesn't effect me in the same way. Amazing.
I seriously can't believe the total absence of solidarity in some people. I don't know if this is even the right word in English, but I hope it makes sense.
The number of people thinking "It does not affect me/I don't need this, so this is ridiculous" is scary.
You have to wonder also why the option is there in Pokémon GO, when it's so unimportant. Like, what is more likely: It actually IS important, but Niantic is too incompetent to implement it in all games, or: It is only important in one game for a reason nobody will ever understand...?
Thanks. I don't have much optimism left but I hope that too.
Comments
@NianticTintino. @NianticTintino
@NianticTintino.
Ive been saying for years Niantic doesn't give a damn.
Nobody takes heed.
@NianticTintino
Yo, Hosette? Go do something else.

And that's cool, but there's a very clear pattern and I'm tired of it.
@Johnsonsine-ING I decline to take the bait, but you are free to continue disagreeing with everything I post and I won't make a fuss about it. Have a lovely day!
What are you even talking about? Just go away already and find someone else to bother. Thank you.
@NianticTintino ****...
Please be mindful of how you communicate - your conduct on these forums could lead to action being taken against your Ingress account.
Do you mean that instead of providing a simple reply like "Sorry, that's outside of the scope of Wayfarer and you should talk to the Ingress team", they are gonna ban him?

And Thank you. This is exactly why I am so frustrated.

The lack of acknowledgement is also concerning.
Even if nothing can/should be posted here is a DM saying 'I'm really sorry it's something that is not in our control' that difficult?
Clearly you do care, otherwise you wouldn't be posting here so much. I appreciate that you acknowledge the optics of how your messages are getting across. We don't know why they're not responding - perhaps they're not authorized to discuss this topic.

About the game, no. About my privacy and personal data and how this is carelessly handled by Niantic? Oh yes!
Harassment!??
@NianticTintino Why do I still have to sit here and answer all kinds of comments from other users, but you and the team are silent still? This is definitely not a topic you can just leave for other users to answer.

Does there seriously have to be a legal reason for this to be important in your opinion?
About the Ingress forum, someone suggested that already. Feel free to read the whole thread here.
