The same can be said for fire stations, police stations, and hospital ERs. As I said before, these aren't off-limit because pedestrians block access to these locations as they can be shooed out of the way, but they sure park their cars next to them and end up in the way. It is also why AEDs are classified as emergency services and are not acceptable.
Thanks for clarifying that. I heard some people reported Painted Fire Hydrants as Obstructs Emergency Services and Niantic rejected their report. Can we expect some consistency moving forward when it comes to reporting Fire Hydrants?
The trash can on the right has been a portal for the better part of a decade since it has a plaque describing the history of the building behind it... one of a series of similar plaques throughout the designated historic district. The fire hydrant is 27 inches from the trash can, close enough that one can stand easily with one foot touching each object. It is completely nonsensical that one of these items obstructs emergency services and the other does not.
This is what happens when attorneys make the rules.
@Aquablast64-PGO You weren't asking me, but I'll answer anyway. Expecting consistency in wayspot rulings is like expecting a storm cloud to rain down solid gold coins. You can wish for it all you want to but you'll be much happier if you calibrate your expectations to reality. (-:
Since the primary counterargument is "whataboutism", what if Niantic extends this to all objects in a marked red zone? Would you be willing to support it then? I have a feeling most will still refuse simply because it means one less Pokestop.
@TheFarix-PGO I made this argument a while ago-- if a fire hydrant being a wayspot obstructs emergency services then anything within 40 meters of a wayspot would logically also obstruct emergency services. I walked a few blocks of Oakland California and identified the location of every fire hydrant, then drew 40 meter circles around them on the intel map. Here's the result.
I don't think you have to be that restrictive. Red zones are what, 5 ft to either side of a fire hydrant? That is provided that the local municipality bothers to paint their red zones or put up barriers.
But as with fire stations and police stations, the issue isn't pedestrians, but the vehicles of players. As much as people try to split hairs on this with "whataboutism" arguements, it won't lead to a good end.
I have seen a few of these when reviewing, though never submitted as hydrants. They've always tried claiming they're something else. I don't know if the submitters genuinely didn't know what they're for or whether they knew exactly what they were and just lied, but yeah... Thankfully they're fairly rare to see when reviewing.
@TheFarix-PGO Players are just as likely to park in a red zone for a wayspot 20-80 meters away as they are for one that is two meters away. I would place a large bet that this ruling came from some mix of the legal and PR departments.
I just got my first Australian Fire Hyrdrant. Love the description. I failed it. No supporting evidence in photo. Most hydrants here are actually on the buildnig land or part of the building.
Otherwise the Fireservice use hydrant service hatches in the road.
Most fire hydrants are on the sidewalk and are usually accessible when walking through just about any community. I would approve a fire hydrant just based on the fact that they are so plentiful.
Plentiful, ubiquitous, mass-produced objects with a primary function of providing an emergency service? Lots of things are plentiful in this world, from sidewalk squares to storm drains to stop signs and beyond. That doesn't mean that they should ever be accepted in Wayfarer.
Niantic says no. This is one of those I cannot, for the forseeable future see them budging on.
IT does not stop some of them being arty or fun. But at the end of the day it will come under the criteria emergency service facility/infrastructure.
There will be nuances. There will be POIs near by. There will be host of really good reasons you think it should change and ones I will go that make sense.
Be I cannot see them budging on this. And I don't blame them. Overly cautious on them. As I would be when it comes to an emergency facility.
Electrical fires and emergencies may involve cutting the power source from these. Applying the blanket over other contained services, they are tools within the operations of power plants. Same as police outposts, sewage manhole covers, generator cabinets, electrical poles, defibs with permanent art. Just how far does tthe rejection of tools within the operations of the listed sites cover, @NianticTintino-ING ? Only fire dept related things or also all of those listed?
Also what about wall murals with the wall hydrant incorporated in its design?
Round and round the discussion goes............. A very great time waster it seems.
Wow - but does this show how the system can be worked - nominators and reviewer working together. No idea if that the case. Or just very poor reviewing and nominators taking advantage.
But how else would something so glaringly obvious pass. And when reported nothing happen. Great example of what sets the scene
Because once these pass irrespective of what Niantic say otherwise others will nominator because they see the pass. and so we go round again.
Actually, those three hydrant boosters in that post were actually approved by Niantic during the very early days of portal reviewing. If one looks at the age of each of the wayspots: all 8 years ago.
And I have all three of the invalid report emails and responses in the period of early 2022 for the above hydrants. You are right that it is a vicious cycle of approval and so it continues.
Hydracija in Serbian means hydration. Silence speaks louder than nonsense which is why I applaud Niantic's withdrawal on most issues and clarifications.
They may try to address it all they want, but that doesn't mean that I will agree with their argument. But they are wrong about obstructing or interfering with emergency services being limited to just standing in or next to driveways.

If it is in a marked "red zone" I would reject that too.

For the record, this is my personal example that illustrates the illogic of this ruling:
The trash can on the right has been a portal for the better part of a decade since it has a plaque describing the history of the building behind it... one of a series of similar plaques throughout the designated historic district. We don’t have these type of fire hydrants in the UK, but it did always seem a bit odd to me that they got accepted.
We use hydrants but they’re in the ground and indicated by these signs.
I wouldn’t think that someone would submit one of these (though I feel I will have jinxed that now and it’ll be my next review).
Anyways, hope this clarification gets added to the main site so that those who don’t use the forum can read it and will review correctly.

Alright @Tintino001-PGO and everyone else - what about this hydrant? Would you reject it for OES if you came across it while reviewing? Why or why not? Note that my understanding is that this is something that would be considered a hydrant by US definitions… and I’m even including a dynamic link if anyone wants to report it ;) https://link.ingress.com/?link=https%3a%2f%2fintel.ingress.com%2fportal%2f0dfa3efbdae7495d972fad470be53e99.16&apn=com.nianticproject.ingress&isi=576505181&ibi=com.google.ingress&ifl=https%3a%2f%2fapps.apple.com%2fapp%2fingress%2fid576505181&ofl=https%3a%2f%2fintel.ingress.com%2fintel%3fpll%3d47.608596%2c-122.328262

It it is going to frustrate some of you no end.
Good luck is all I can say.

This conversation reminds me of three fire hydrant boosters within an industrial area which are all current wayspots on the same road.
I love it.
Companies cannot risk having their game directing players to places emergency services would need to access in case of emergency.

Just saw a pretty sweet Hydrant. Nominator clearly put in work to address rejection criteria. Shame it still gets a 1* for PRP
