Wayfarer Criteria Update - Outdoor Basketball Courts - Discussion

Hello Explorers.
December of 2022, the Wayfarer Team made an announcement informing Explorers that we were making a small exception to one of our criteria to include more Wayspots for NBA All-World. That change was to allow outdoor basketball courts on school grounds. At this time, we will be reverting that change back to no Wayspots on K-12 and under schools (preschool, primary/elementary, secondary/high school).
This change will take place in the phases described below:
- Phase 1: Starting today
- No more outdoor basketball courts on school grounds should be nominated
- Outdoor basketball courts on school grounds currently on HOLD should be withdrawn.
- Outdoor basketball courts on school grounds that come up in your review flow should be rejected with a 1-star rating or reported.
- No punishments will be given out to Explorers who have their outdoor basketball courts reported as abuse for being on school grounds. This will be true for nominations made prior to October of 2023.
- Phase 2: Starting October 2023
- Niantic will be removing outdoor basketball court Wayspots on school grounds by the end of October 2023.
- Explorers who wish to report outdoor basketball courts on school grounds through in-game methods can start to do so on Oct 1, 2023
- Removal reports for outdoor basketball on school grounds will be removed
- Phase 3: Starting November 2023
- Any outdoor basketball courts on school grounds missed by Nianic can be reported by our Explorers just as any other K-12 Wayspot would for removal
Thank you all for your support through these changes. Let us know if you have any questions about these changes.

Phase 3: Starting November 2023
...
The suspense, I can barely contain it!
@NianticTintino-ING think you might have missed Phase 3 when posting
Thanks! Somehow the point for phase 3 was moved to phase two. It's fixed now.
So let me see if I got this straight:
Today: if a K-12 basketball court is accepted and syncs to a game with sync, it can be reported by any means, since K-12 courts have never been allowed in games with sync.
In October: NBA All World will be updated so that you can report any K-12 courts that have synced to it so that they can be removed from NBA All World even though the game itself has been shut down. These can only be reported via NBA All World since it is the only game that ever allowed these wayspots. If you come across a K-12 court that synced to some other game it doesn’t belong, it should be reported using all the same means it can be today.
In November: Any K-12 courts still appearing in NBA All World but not other games can now be reported by any means.
Did I get that all right? Seems odd to keep NBA All World running for another month just to support a new K-12 court reporting feature.
I appreciate this post, specifically the clarification that there will not be any punishments for having submitted on school grounds per the original request. I assume that will extend to rejected nominations which were appealed and are still undecided? I did not appeal the rejection of the ones I submitted, but I think some people have.
I love this, especially the part about Niantic doing the bulk of the removals. This is a marked improvement over the Foursquare fiasco, where Wayfinders were expected to report thousands of inappropriate Wayspots via a bulky form or individual onsite reports - or "improve" the eligible imports by adding photos. I appreciate the process improvements!
I'm sorry @NianticTintino-ING but I'm finding hard to grasp Phases 2 and 3
In phase 3 you state that remaining basketball courts can be reported, but that's already part of phase 2 "Explorers who wish to report outdoor basketball courts on school grounds through in-game methods can start to do so on Oct 1, 2023", although the next point is really confusing "Removal reports for outdoor basketball on school grounds will be removed" what is gonna be removed? the wayspots or the reports?
Is this a correct summary?
Additional questions:
Can nominators with such candidates in VOTING state request the removal of such nominations?
With regards to the removal by Niantic:
Are you gonna remove all waypots added as imports from Courts of the World?
@NianticTintino-ING Thank you so much for replying to me and making this official post!
Is it possible if we can get this update on the front page of the Wayfarer website? Like how the last Wayfarer challenge was advertised on the front of the page. (Also, it would be good if forum announcements were on the front of the Wayfarer page.)
This has been encouraged on our side as well.
It went totally over my head that those were ever eligible, so I have been rejecting everything K-12 anyway. I want to say 'as we should'. If the Wayfarer forum front page was managable and intuitive, maybe more users would feel encouraged to dig these things out. Maybe we wouldn't even have to dig?
The forum is already too far removed. Criteria guidance needs to be on the main site.
I mean, currently I am searching for the post about an upcoming challenge vote or whatever. I only saw that because someone linked it to me in the first place. I wanted to go vote now and I can't find it when I enter the front page here. I have to enter my personal profile to see if I have notifications. What is that even?
@NianticTintino-ING Feedback given.
But we don't want Niantic to sticky timely posts! They don't know how to un-sticky. We got to where the page was 2/3 out-of-date stickied notes. Awful experience for new posters - and even if you un-stuck them on your own view, they come back if you're not logged in.
@Ciaocub-PGO ?
my waypoint, which was nominated from pokemon go, was accepted at least a month ago, but i can’t find it in pokémon go, or in any of niantic’s other games. does anyone know why this might be the case?
Did you read the text on your acceptance email that states not all accepted nominations are able to appear in all Niantic games?
Each game has a proximity rule that determines what can and can't be added to that game. Pokémon Go Hub has a guide on S2 cells in Pokémon Go, and level 17 S2 cells are what are used when it comes to determining whether a new wayspot can be added to Pokémon Go. Your nomination is likely in a level 17 S2 cell that already contains a Pokéstop or Gym.
i already knew that a wayspot might not appear in the game i wanted it to. what confused me specifically was that i couldn’t find the wayspot in any niantic game i looked at. i didn’t know about s2 cells though, so thanks for the explanation
