Beware Cattle

In my local town, there is a sign saying “Beware Cattle”.

Ive had it rejected 3 times by ML. Clearly it’s reading the photo itself, as I’ve removed any reference to “beware” in the title/description.

In any other situation it’s probably right to reject it given it’s a “warning sign”.

But context is needed here which the ML completely overlooks - this sign is obsolete. For centuries in my area commoners had the right to let their cattle roam to graze, this tradition faded and ended with the outbreak of BSE in 1986.

With no farms for miles, this sign is an oddity for those not in the know. But it’s a relic of quite interesting history in this area, I think it merits becoming a wayspot as it is an historical sign now.

Shame all the ML sees is “beware” and immediately blocks it.

Im not against the use of ML as we probably would be flooded with many bad nominations without it. But it needs to read descriptions too.

Is there any way I can get my nomination to be reviewed by humans?

Can you post a photo of it?

@ZombieZebra3-PGO I’ve also tried much closer up shot, so there isn’t much greenery. This sign could be anytime between 1930’s to 1950’s.

    Hello @Willocop-PGO

Just because a sign is still there, but its purpose no longer applies, does not make it meet criteria. Out of exercise, socialise or explore the only one this could be considered against is explore. My personal opinion (and wayfarer is all about judgements to and interpretation) is that this does not make a strong case for exploration. I get the frustration that Machine Learning - ML - Emily - has rejected it and not allowed a human to assess. But much as I get frustrated by Emily’s rejections I think in this case it is probably correct. You can appeal if you have made a good case with a full description of its history and significance and a human can then assess.

Yeah agreed. It might be more worth your time to either appeal this one (be very clear that this is a historic sign for Niantic and explain why it’s important to the history of your town), or you may want to cut your losses on this particular nomination.

Unless @NianticAaron or someone else from Niantic sees this and can send it straight to Niantic voting, there’s little that can be done on our end. The AI can’t be forced to compute nuance or context.

@ZombieZebra3-PGO & @Elijustrying-ING (& for @NianticAaron if he wants to know before taking action)

    The description reads :

In an area devoid of cattle, this sign is a relic from a bygone era - echoing a time when for hundreds of years commoners exercised their right to let their cattle roam to graze. This tradition faded, and ended with the outbreak of BSE in 1986. Cattle are not allowed in urban areas, making this sign a poignant reminder of a once-common practice that shaped the landscape for centuries.

    Supporting info reads:

With the nearest farm miles away, it’s an odd sign for those not in the know. This sign stands in the middle of Buckhurst Hill town as a unique relic from an era when commoners freely let cattle roam for centuries. The evolution of cattle management is evident today, with longhorn cattle now grazing in designated rural areas (information about cattle grazing on this weblink especially see the last paragraph “did you know?”, which means cattle will never return to urban areas making this sign a historical “oddity”, known by some locals to share with visitors making this wayspot a unique historical talking point.
