Has a user of a high enough level submitted any reports for them as an invalid waypoints? I would hope this would be one of the things the team will actually take seriously if a report is submitted.
See my comments in this thread about how, once a wayspot is in the system (even an invalid one), Niantic is VERY reluctant to remove them:
However as @NianticCasey-ING passed along that the Wayfarer Team considers THESE to be “blocking emergency access”, then you MAY have an easier time convincing them to remove them.
(I don’t have to agree with Niantic’s position about whether painted fire hydrants should be wayspots in order to hold them accountable enough to be consistent with their own rules.)
This is generally true for most criteria (which is why there are so many memorial benches in the game); however, they are very quick for anything that could interfere with emergency operations. I haven't heard specifically on the removal of painted hydrants, but others have been removed quickly.
From what I saw on the reddit thread, no one submits them to be removed, was actually hoping @NianticCasey-ING might give opinion on ones that get accepted even after updated clarification
