@NianticGiffard You obviously don't understand. Plenty of us showed you proof and all you can say is "I am sorry" and "we might give it another look"? What a joke.
@NianticGiffard I wonder what your reaction would be if Niantic, at the end of a month of work, didn't pay you and told you that "all eligible workers received their pay and they wouldn't be handling out anymore payments"...
@NianticGiffard You have already promised these rewards. Niantic has made multiple public posts stating the requirements which we have fulfilled by setting our home location within Russia and reviewing waypoints within Russia.
There is no legal or moral way for you to not provide the rewards that you promised.
I too have not received the rewards as indicated by others above. I logged tickets via support in game, which have since been closed without being resolved. Please advise when the advertised rewards will be issued.
Thanks to above. I’ve messaged Eurogamer the following
Euro gamer as a well respected site in the field I need to report about niantic and their Russian wayfarer challenge. Reviewers only needed to change home location and do one Russian review on wayfarer before 16th June 2021. Niantic stated the rewards would be items in pogo and 10 free wayfarer upgrades.
Many people did this. However only a handful of people received the rewards. Many have been complaining on the community forum and niantic admitted they changed criteria post challenge. Many people were not happy and then niantic stated they would nevertheless rewards all those who changed location and did at least 1 Russian review. However to date many still don’t have the rewards and have complained. These have fallen on deaf ears and in fact some of the forum posts have been closed by the niantic moderator without any good reason. This is completely underhand and shady behavior from this company and is wholly unacceptable. We request you make an issue of this as people have even posted proof they followed the criteria.
Normally I don’t have many issues with niantic...but this is totally unacceptable. If they won’t bother to listen, we’ll just have to make our grievances impossible to ignore it seems.
@NianticGiffard i didnt read everything here, but in DEFENSE for everyone that is hacking on you like a crow:
Niantic´s Wayfarer Team is itzy-bitzy. There are many things that the wayfarer team is seeing very much different than the people at actually are working on it.
The Niantic Team didnt have a few hickups with the Russian Event, it is and was a major problem you are facing:
You changed the rules during the event. Something that is very bad. You made your bed, now lay in it. I am totally with you guys here that will continue to keep asking for their reward!
HOME-Location changed to Moscow, during event. Reviewed numerous waypoints from Russia DURING event.
This is absurd!
Give us at least our upgrades! Don't care about the ingame rewards!
With this upgrades we would improve the playability of ALL YOUR games. Ingress, PoGo, HPWU and at least your Database to offer for other Games/Developers... Sorry, i just don't get it🤷♂️
@NianticGiffard Still waiting on the rewards! Hope you'll do the right thing. FWIW this incentive made me go from ~50 reviews to ~350 reviews in a month, and I would probably have done more. However I am going to stop now as I don't see a reason to continue doing wayfarer if the contract of trust is continually breached.

Niantic Labs, the developer of Pokemon Go, reneged on a promotion ran under their Wayfarer program called "The Russia Wayfarer Challenge".
On May 27 2021, Niantic publicly posted a promotion that if reviewers in their Wayfarer program "set your home location within Russia" and "review at least one waypoint within Russia" they would be entitled to certain rewards in Wayfarer, Pokemon Go and Ingress.
Pokémon GO: 100 Pokéballs, 2 Super Incubators, 2 Incense, 2 Premium Raid Pass, and 10 Wayfarer Upgrades
As of today, Niantic has not fulfilled on this promise and qualifying users like myself have not been granted the rewards.
This has been covered on MassivelyOP, Reddit and Niantic's own forum where they have stated that there will be no more rewards for this promotion.
Name calling isn't going to help anybody here. Giffard has put themselves in a very unfortunate position by being the only person from Niantic that is "active" on the forums, and I fully understand that they are apprehensive about posting updates to this case. @NianticGiffard is the messenger here, and from what I can gather from this thread so far, they are not in control of the process. If they make any promises whatsoever then they will be held personally responsible for that by the community here, even if it's the rest of the Wayfarer team and/or their leadership that is to blame for the promise not being followed up on. At this point, if they say anything at all, it will backfire, so I fully understand the radio silence on this issue.
Now as for what can be done to actually remedy the problem, there are a few options and problems associated with those options. Most people in here agree that it is the upgrades they want, and don't care as much about the ingame rewards. The problem is that upgrades have a destabilizing effect on Wayfarer. The power of an upgrade is inherently dependent on its rarity, and if every wayfarer got ten upgrades right now, upgraded nominations would slow down noticeably and regular nominations would probably come to a standstill.
This means that giving 10 upgrades to every wayfarer is not feasible. It must be limited to only those that actually participated in the event. And therein lies the next problem - the Wayfarer team apparently can't figure that out. So we have to find out which ways Niantic can accurately see who did participate.
One way to do this would be to see who changed their home locations to Russia some time during the event. The vast majority of those would have done so in order to participate in the Wayfarer challenge, so even if you gave everyone with a home location in Russia at that time 10 upgrades, it wouldn't overflow the system globally. However, I don't believe this is possible. It's very likely that Niantic only stores the current home location, and don't keep an audit trail on past home locations for each user. They may not even store the time it was last set, because it's supposed to be "permanent" and storing the time it was set wouldn't serve any purpose beyond taking up space in their user database.
If you can't check who had their home location in Russia during the Russia event, then you should be able to do the obvious and see which users reviewed each nomination in Russia. Niantic has this data. This is because that's how the system can know that a user should be awarded an agreement. But it's entirely possible that there are no timestamps associated with that data. It would be enough for the system to simply store the user IDs and corresponding review details and not connect it to a timestamp, because that timestamp generally wouldn't serve a purpose other than taking up database space.
This means that Niantic can tell who reviewed each wayspot, but they can't tell if they did that review before or after the end of the event. If the nomination concluded its review during the event, then everyone who reviewed that nomination will receive an agreement at the same time, which is easy to track for an event like this, even if timestamps for each review isn't stored. However, tracking reviews themselves during the event would require that Niantic has a backup of their database from before and after the event, that they can compare to find the differences (i.e. reviews during the event). It's possible that they don't have such backups at this point, especially this long after the event conclusion. This is how it can be possible for agreements during the event to be an easy metric to use as a qualifier, while participation itself can be impossible.
It's possible that the intent was for agreements only to count, and therefore this approach might have been perfectly acceptable. However, unclear wording meant that people got confused, and the requirements were relaxed so that reviews alone would be enough, in order to satisfy wayfarers. However, this suddenly meant accurate fulfillment of the rewards was now impossible because there's no way to track that data.
The last resort that Niantic can do if this worst case scenario is actually true, is to look at their current database of nominations in Russia, and:
- Filter away everything that was submitted later than the last 24 hours leading up to the event's conclusion (Niantic has this information, we know because it's displayed on the nominations management page in Wayfarer)
- Filter away any nominations that had fully concluded before the event started in the first place (Niantic has this information, we know because we can check the age of the oldest photo on a Pokéstop in Pokémon go, which appears to correspond with its acceptance date)
All nominations that are left after that, can be assumed to have been in voting during the event. It does not mean that they were actually voted on in that time, nor that everyone who reviewed it did so during that time - it merely means that it was in voting during that time, which means it was eligible to have appeared to reviewers during the event.
Everyone who is listed in the database as having voted on any of those nominations should receive the rewards.
Yes, this will mean more people than intended will get rewards. However, I see no other way out if my assumptions are correct.
It would be helpful to me if people who are affected by this issue post here about which city they set their home location to, and how many reviews they did. The people who have not gotten rewards yet are a minority, so it would be helpful to try to identify what is in common between all of those who are lacking rewards.
Lastly, it's not my place to moderate this forum, but it would greatly contribute to a healthy discussion if we remain civil, maybe we can prevent this thread from having to be locked again. For reasons already explained, I don't believe Giffard is willing to reply to this post in public (although they are welcome in my DMs if they so desire), but I hope they can discuss this with the rest of the Wayfarer team and maybe provide this feedback to them, if that can be of any help to them.
It would be helpful to me if people who are affected by this issue post here about which city they set their home location to, and how many reviews they did. I agree people shouls be civil toward Giffard and all other individuals, short of John Hanke exposing himself to some hurtful words.
The last resort that Niantic can do if this worst case scenario is actually true, is to look at their current database of nominations in Russia
The last resort is for Niantic to hire some staff / pay some overtime and manually reward the agreed upon items to all eligible participants, identifying them by every means necessary. I don't care if that means manually inspecting a database or individually PM'ing every claimant and having them state in writing they are eligible. If Niantic can't produce the evidence they'll just have to take our word for it.
I agree with the no name calling. I usually find that it takes away from the actual argument, so I refrain from it usually. With that said...
...your comment made a LOT of sense. The thing is, a lot of what Niantic does makes NO sense... and yes I realize Giffard is probably the unfortunate scapegoat in all of this though unable to actually bring about the change we desire. While I do sympathize with him on a very, very small scale, I'd have to say that the company has taken so much from us (our time, our money, etc.) and as much as it's easy for someone to just say "hey then don't participate/play" it won't stop them from doing the same things over and over again to the rest of the people who will still partake. Companies like Blizzard actually take time and listen to our concerns and criticisms (usually), so what's the problem with a billion dollar company like Niantic? They've had every opportunity to really dig deep and take a look at their issues, yet they continue as if nothing happened, making some 50% effort fixes that clearly demonstrate they don't care. They're more likely to close a thread without warning than they are to bring about actual, meaningful change.
Wayfarer should be an enjoyable experience, not a simulation of an unpaid job our parents forced us to do to "learn things". We don't always need compensation for the things we do, but best believe if you advertise rewards you should choose your words carefully because if you don't it'll end up like the fiasco it is now. If they actually fixed this broken system and were more transparent throughout the process, maybe a lot of these things wouldn't happen. Sure, easier said than done... but they have the funds... they just need the drive to do it, which they haven't shown.
This is ridiculous. Post "clarification" and immediately close the thread lol. Either nothing has been reviewed or more lies. Plenty of people had shown evidence of our reviews during the event. I stopped reviewing completely the day Niantic didn't give out the rewards.
This is the kind of thing that I'm looking for. You mention that you all reviewed in Moscow, and you all reviewed a relatively small number of nominations from there. The unofficial Wayfarer discord group posted several examples during the event that they unearthed Redacted-era nominations in Moscow, which strongly indicates that the time to resolution for submissions in Moscow is very long.
If you reviewed a small number of nominations, it's possible that none of them cleared the vote until after Niantic did their last "check" of the database. They might have resolved by now, but they could all still have been in voting when that check was done. Even if you're actively coordinating, the chances that you all reviewed the exact same nominations are extremely slim. It's enough that you reviewed most of the same nominations, but had a single one or small handful that differed. That single one might have been accepted during, or in the few days following the conclusion of the event. That could have been enough to flag you as eligible for the rewards, while four of you weren't so lucky.
My theory is that:
Event concluded. By this time, some number of your friends group had already earned an agreement.
Rewards are rolled out to those who got an agreement.
Niantic caves to community pressure and changes the criteria to also reward people who didn't get an agreement during the event. However, Niantic has no way to actually check timestamps of reviews, meaning fulfillment of rewards by this criterion is impossible. This could have been damage control/a decision that was hastily made before they realized that it would actually be impossible to fulfill.
Niantic does a second check for new agreements a few days after the conclusion of the event. More people will have gotten an agreement by now, even if they didn't manage to get one before the conclusion of the event.
This second check then triggers rewards for those people who have by now gotten agreements for wayspots in Russia, but hadn't gotten one by the time the event ended. By this point, there are still some people who haven't received their rewards, because all of their reviewed nominations are still in review, meaning no agreements were caught in the second check.
Niantic can keep doing checks for new agreements, but the longer they wait, the higher the chances are that they start rewarding people who didn't participate in the event, and only started reviewing after its conclusion, in low traffic/rapid resolution areas. Those people's agreements are now coming in, and will soon make up a majority of agreements.
At some point, Niantic decided that they can no longer issue rewards, because agreements caused in part by event reviews from slow areas become drowned out by agreements coming in from fast areas.
This is all just speculation. But if this is true, people who are still missing their rewards would likely be people who
Only reviewed in a very slow turnaround area, such as Moscow or other major cities, AND ALSO
Reviewed so few wayspots that none of them reached a resolution by the time Niantic stopped checking for agreements
Now this isn't a perfect theory, and it doesn't account for the apparent lack of reports of false positives (rewards issued to people who should not have gotten them) that we should have seen from Russian reviewers in the aftermath of the event if this was true. But it's the closest I can come to an explanation that makes sense, and I can see a clear sequence of events that would lead to the described scenario happening.
