The "mass-produced manhole covers" in Japan - Wayspot and Wayfarer!
As you may know, Japan is currently one of the most overcrowded Wayspot areas in the world.
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, e.t.c........
If the applicant complies with the "Wayspot Eligibility",the ones that would normally be rejected as a matter of course are ONLINE as Wayspots now (probably hundreds more).
There are mixed in with the overcrowded.
It is a manhole cover.
(There is also an example of a manhole cover that exists as a Wayspot as a "manhole".)
A mass-produced manhole cover made by pouring molten metal into a mould.
For some reason, the mass-produced manhole covers, which can be replaced at any time, exist in Japan as an incredibly large number of wayspots.
The "Manhole Cover Wayspot" has been submitted continuously since the Seer days. And unbelievably, it's now ONLINE.
And these manhole covers are still being applied for on Wayfarer!,everyday.
and (strangely enough) those mass-produced products are still being approved and are still being produced as Wayspots.
I reject mass-produced manhole covers. However, if you look at IntelMap, you will see that manhole covers exist ONLINE as Wayspots.
I believe that manhole covers should have been rejected in the first place.
Sadly, in Japan, there is a wayspot of manhole covers blocking sewers and culverts.
And there are too many of them to count.
Wayspots exist not only in big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, but also in regional cities and rural areas, and surprisingly, all over Japan.
It's amazing how many "manhole cover Wayspots" there are in Japan.
Here are just a few of the many examples.
(A)
Title of the Wayspot:マンホール

For your reference, here are two blogs that cover manhole covers in Tokyo.

This Wayspot is located in the car park of a hospital,
And the Wayspot is located in the parking lot of a hospital and cannot be seen from Street View.
The background is filled with yellow paint, and in the middle is a fire engine.
This manhole cover can be seen all over Japan.
The fact that this is a Wayspot means that you are playing around a firewater tank that is there for firefighting purposes, which is an impediment to emergency firefighting.
As an example, we quote the following page from the official website of Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
The sub-heading reads "Parking is prohibited near fire hydrants and fire tanks. It states
Fire tanks and hydrants are essential for firefighting and provide the fire brigade with the water they need to extinguish fires.
It may not have been necessary to give an example, but it is clear that it is not appropriate to accept the lid of a firewater tank as a Wayspot.
In addition to fire tanks, there are also manhole covers stamped with the name "fire hydrant" throughout Japan. As an example, here is a PDF file published by Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture.
I hope you can see that it is the same design as the yellow manhole cover with the fire engine on it, for which we got the screen capture in (c).
The same manhole cover exists all over Japan, not only in Nagasaki and Mie prefectures.
The examples given here (A) to (C) are just the tip of the iceberg.
In Japan, many mass-produced manhole covers have become Wayspots.
And Wayfinders, seeing that many of these inappropriate "manhole covers" (or manholes themselves) already exist as Wayspots, seem to think that if they apply for a manhole cover, it will be approved, and they apply for manhole covers as Wayfarers everyday.
The list goes on and on.
I have Wayfarer! reviewed 31452 at the moment.
Of these, we feel that the number of manhole covers examined is more than 1/30th of the total.
Nevertheless, I would like to share some examples with you below.
It's horrible.
The "mass produced manhole covers" that are already LIVE as Wayspot are a bad precedent.
Even if there are different designs of manhole covers among the mass-produced manhole covers, this is only because the designs vary from municipality to municipality.
Even in a single town there are hundreds of mass-produced cast-iron manholes of the same design on the roadways and footpaths.
Maybe the jury will look at the painted Japanese manhole covers and say "Beautiful! Interesting design! Interesting design!”,
But it would be a mistake to put it online as a Wayspot, because there are a lot of manhole covers with exactly the same design in that town.
Japanese manhole covers are not only unsuitable for Wayspot because they are mass-produced.
There are other reasons too.
As a matter of course. It is problematic for us to use the manholes themselves, or the manhole covers to go down into sewers and culverts, as a place to play.
They are located, for example, on the carriageway, which can be dangerous.
Not only are manhole covers over the carriageway applied for, but also, as mentioned above, there are those who apply for covers attached to water tanks associated with fire extinguishing systems.
My friend tried to request removal from the scanner andn I written to Ingress Compunity(JP) regarding a mere manhole cover that already existed, but I received several rejections.
I thought it was obvious that it was "mass-produced" and "dangerous", so I applied for its removal.
The person in charge who made the decision of rejection did not think the same as me at that time.
Here's an example.
Name of the portal: でべそマンホール
DEBESO manhole
(*でべそ mean outie)
Location: https://intel.ingress.com/intel?&pll=36.307594,139.462432
City, Town and Village: 1601 Fukui-cho, Ashikaga-shi, Tochigi-ken
Country: Japan
Reason for complaint.
Reason for complaint: This is a very common manhole before the surrounding area was asphalted or cemented to make the horizontal level the same as the surrounding ground.
It is a very common manhole. It is a mass-produced product and there is nothing unique about it.
The manhole and its cover are in the process of being constructed and have been submitted under the name "DEBESO MANHOLE(*outie manhole)".
When the construction is completed, concrete and soil will be placed around the manhole to create a flat surface.
Yes, it is just a manhole. It is a manhole cover.
Manhole covers are useful because they prevent us, pedestrians and cars, from falling through the holes.
However, being useful for its intended purpose is not the same as being useful as a Wayspot,.
It is not a good idea for mass-produced manhole covers (and manholes) to go ONLINE as Wayspot, an entity that is in line with the philosophy of Wayfarer!
Would you consider the numerous "mass-produced manhole cover Waypot" in Japan to be appropriate?
For more information on the number of manhole covers in Japan, please refer to Wikipedia.
Wikipedia Manhole (in Japanese only)
There are about 15 million manhole covers for sewers alone.
The number of manhole covers for electricity, telecommunications, gas and water storage tanks is far more than 15 million.
In my opinion, it is not a good idea to Wayspot each and every one of these mass-produced manhole covers.
See also Wikipedia here.
Manhole's lid (in Japanese only)
As a sample, here are two photos of "design manholes".
They are coloured with several paints, and at first glance they may seem colourful and interesting, but they are also mass-produced.
They exist in the hundreds, with the same design, in every single municipality.
Even a simple cast iron mass produced manhole cover can be seen on IntelMap as a Wayspot LIVE all over Japan.
It would be a mistake to continue to use mass-produced manhole covers as Wayspots.
There are, of course, a few unique manhole covers in Japan that are not mass-produced.
These one-of-a-kind manhole covers have an artistic quality and can be described as works of art.
If you look at the official website announcing them, you will see that these special one-off product manhole covers are placed in places where road safety is taken into account.
In Japan, there is a culture of admiring the special, one-of-a-kind manhole covers that are not mass-produced.
Many of these exist as Wayspots.
The fact that these special, one-of-a-kind manhole covers exist as Wayspots is a welcome development.
I don't want to remove or reject all the "manhole cover Wayspots" that exist in Japan.
I would like to inform you that mass-produced manhole covers are not suitable for Wayspot.
As a sample, here are some examples of special manhole covers that are not mass-produced
(*Many of them are special covers with animated or cartoon characters. )
From the official website of Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture.
Japan's first led luminous "illuminated manhole" with illustrations by KADOKAWA Co.
Some samples from Google Image Search:.
From Twitter:
北斗の拳マンホール蓋:
Pokémon manholes "Pocket lid".
The official website states that "Each poke lid is an original design and there is only one in the world. Each poke lid is unique.
(In other words, if the Wayspot for this pocket lid exists outside of Japan, it proves that it is a Wayspot that has been falsely applied for.)
If you open the official website where these are presented, you will see that
These examples are unmistakably one-of-a-kind, one-of-a-kind manhole covers.
Even if it is a manhole cover, it is special.
(And they are different from most mass-produced manhole covers in that they are placed in a safe place.)
I want you to know that in Japan, there are still mass-produced manhole covers that deviate from the Wayfarer's philosophy and the Wayfarer's rules in Japan.
I would like you to remove Wayspots that you think deviate from these rules.
As mentioned above, we can tell you that there are more than one or two such "abuse Wayspots".
I would be a happiness if all the ”mass-produced manhole cover Wayspots" in Japan were removed, except for the ones that use special, one-of-a-kind manhole covers.
Is that difficult to realize?
When my friends and me find "mass producer manhole lid WAYSPOT" in Japan's Intelmap and real world,
Would you consider removing those inappropriate Wayspots if I provide the following information in this thread?
1)Title of the Wayspot:
2)Location: (Latitude and Longitude)
3)Location (City:)
I understand that this is a very difficult topic to deal with as it is not about one or two Wayspots.
If you say yes, then I couldn't be more pleased.
And when you do, I will give you my most sincere thanks.
Comments
@MagicalThorn-ING Thank you for the tremendous detail and insights you provided to all of us here. The photos are especially helpful. I had zero idea about any of this previously, and now feel well informed.
I agree that these should not be approved as future wayspots for the reasons you provide.
Thanks again. This is awesome.
In Germany there some towns have individual manhole covers with their town crest in it. Within a city they are of course mass produced and generic, and I never heard about really unique ones. Fortunately they are only rarely seen as nominations. There are a few wayspots with manhole covers out there, but afaik all of them are very old, and I guess that these are wayspots pre OPR ....
But removal of this stuff seems to be impossible:
https://intel.ingress.com/intel?ll=51.109332,10.645025&z=17&pll=51.109332,10.645025
This isn't a manhole cover, but it's similar - it's the cover of a slider of the water supply. Massproduced, in front of evry house, that is connected to the water supply network. A google search with the words wasser (=water), schieber (=slider) and deckel (=cover) shows without any doubt, that this is massproduced stuff, and they cost around 40€.
Further the title of wayspot mentions the firstname Werner - as a reference to the German comic figure Werner, a plumber that likes motorbikes and beer. The W is very present in that comics, for example on the caps of the beer, that can also be bought as a merchandising product in real life: https://www.amazon.de/B%C3%B6lkstoff-Bier-Flaschen-Wernerbier-Pilsner/dp/B01LBXVVSO
It's impossible to hoax German reviewers with this wrong reference in the title, since evryone knows these generic slider caps since they are on street or sidewalk in front of evry house - so this wayspot has to be older than OPR and most likely Nia portal monkeys approved it.
Lots of attempts to remove this portal were rejected. A friend of mine tried that, before there was any possibility to do appeals. So he reported it again and again, without success. Then he tried to do an long range edit to throw that thing into the Atlantic ocean, and then report it there. He got a strike for that.
Few months ago I reported fake wayspots in this town, and also mentioned this thing and the whole explanation from above. Niantic didn't remove this wayspot. https://community.wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/discussion/12099/fakes-and-scrap-at-bad-langensalza

Hi. @Raachermannl-ING
As a major premise, mass-produced products should be rejected. Almost all manhole covers, including those in Japan and those in Germany, are mass-produced. I would like to applaud the good sense of German Wayfinders who do not apply for manhole covers.
Imagine what tragedy awaits you when the manholes that almost exist in front of each house become Wayspots. I and my friends have tried many times to remove the manhole Wayspot, but it has been rejected so far. However, the manhole cover Wayspot still exists, and it cannot be overlooked that it will increase further.
Therefore, I raised the issue at this place. It is a tragedy that such large-scale abuse applications are still being filed throughout Japan.
Manhole Cover Wayspot considers to be an unacceptable entity under the Wayfarer! .
I don't want to give up. That's why I visit here and speak to everyone, including you.
I couldn't help but laugh, but I'm pleased to inform you that just two hours ago I received an email rejecting my request to remove the "DEBESO manhole" I mentioned earlier. Very timely.
man-holes even appear in the oficial pokemon channel and they are wayspots lol https://youtu.be/MpYtKRuKUXQ?t=308
as long they are artsy...
I know it's a long post but you should read the whole thing. Those particular covers are discussed.
I think Japanese people can't identify

Ever since Niantic added a lot of low quality POI themselves it has gotten very obvious that they prefer quantity over quality. Silence on their side is part of this Laissez-faire approach I guess.
Hi, @NianticGiffard .@NianticCasey-ING @NianticBrian-ING
It is now a month and a half since we sent you our report on mass-produced manhole covers.
However, I have yet to receive a reply.
The difference between "the ineligibility of mass-produced manhole covers as POIs" and "the special artistic level of existence of one-of-a-kind manhole covers" has already been discussed in detail.
So, as far as I are concerned, there may be no need to repeat the same thing any more.
You can find out how many mass-produced manhole covers are currently become Wayspot by searching your company's database.
So I thought it would be a good idea to let you know in this thread how many new mass-produced manhole covers have been applied for.
If I am wrong, I would like to know what you think.
The aforementioned "mass-produced manhole covers" were among the 50 I reviewed today, and there were this many.
Hi, @NianticGiffard .
I have judged another mass-produced manhole today and will pass it on to you.
:-)

Even if it is coloured, this is still a mass-produced product.
Only the serial number in the centre can be reassembled to identify each piece, but the surrounding lid is mass-produced.
Hi, @NianticGiffard .
As mentioned above, we have told you that there are about 15 million manhole covers in the sewerage system alone.
There are still many attempts from all over the country in Japan to turn these mass-produced manhole covers into wayspots.
I would like to tell you again about new manholes nomination that I encountered in the course of my review.

Couldn't you at least just reject them all, if they're simply not meeting any criteria?
If @NianticGiffard ever respond to your reports, then I'd might started to report every generic entrance gates, government office buildings or signs, residential homes name signs, any kind of street arts as the result of vandalism but mistakenly assumed as "murals", etc. that were scattered all across Indonesia.
To any Niantic staff who reading this: it's time to tell those submitters that "What is it" list IS NOT one of eligibility criteria!
Hi, @NianticGiffard .
After several applications, an IntelMap and a field survey, we have come across one that bears the name "Manhole". So, I'd like to share that information with you.

It's just a cover for a gas pipe or a drainpipe. It is only about 8cm in diameter.
Title of the Wayspot:ムジナもんのマンホール

It is certainly visually unique and it has some general artistic merit. Similar to painted power boxes.
I agree, it's quite beautiful to be honest.
It is characteristic of you both that you always write unsubstantiated statements based on your own spontaneous feelings at the time, without reviewing the contents of your reports.
They are coloured with several paints, and at first glance they may seem colourful and interesting, but they are also mass-produced.
That is just your silly opinion. Also a very rude opinion. In fact, you are unwelcomed.
These are Engineer To Order, not mass-produced products, right?
The colored ones are done by hand by artisans, right?
However, I think they need to be on sidewalks, parks, etc. because they can't be on the roadway.
Hi @MagicalThorn-ING! We have reviewed the report and have taken action on the 30 Wayspots and the 28 Wayfinders in accordance with our policies. While we are unable to discuss our actions in detail to protect the submitter’s privacy, they may include, but are not limited to, sending a warning message, placing restrictions on their Wayfarer, Pokémon GO, or Ingress account, putting their account on probation, or placing a temporary or permanent suspension on their Wayfarer, Pokémon GO or Ingress account.
Thanks for helping us maintain the quality of the Wayspots
I wonder which 30 manhole covers were taken down—those at which meet removal criteria, or including those generic ones.
Because it'll totally unfair if among those 30 there's at least 1 generic manhole cover but not meeting removal criteria which got removed instead, meanwhile Australian players are complaining about survey markers yet you only remove 1 of them with no safe pedestrian access!
It's most likely that the manhole covers that were removed were chosen specifically because of pedestrian access, specifically for covers that were in the street. The AUS survey markers tend to be on sidewalks, so they would likely have what Niantic considers to be safe pedestrian access.
I sure hope so. The ones on sidewalks should definitely not be removed IMO.
I'm counting 33 wayspots which were screenshotted by the OP within the Wayfarer review system, and read 30 which was taken action on.
The three I could deduce which were not removed and actioned were the case in Iwase Bashi, the bird with the red flowers in Nishitokyo and the Miyagi flowers in Maebashi, which clearly appear to be in sidewalks: safe pedestrian access. The other 30 look to be clearly in the middle of streets and roads in both urban and rural settings. I don't think any which were already existing and screenshotted in Intel were actioned (but I can't be bothered to check)
And again, @patsufredo-PGO, the only survey mark which was removed was the one that the OP alleged was "live in the system" but it was only something that the reviewer saw In Voting, which was understandably in the middle of the street with zero safe pedestrian access whatsoever.
Why can't people just reject on based on what they see in Wayfarer, to reject it for pedestrian access as the default reaction to seeing a nomination like this, instead of resorting to shared copious work and reporting in engaging in this reporting process? I guess it makes sense though, it does relinquish such nominations from the queue.
I checked Intelmap and found that Akiruno Fish has been removed. This manhole is located on the sidewalk right in front of the parking lot.
Regarding the reviews, other than the three you mentioned, manholes in Tsuruudacho, Nakadacho, and Wataricho are clearly on the sidewalk. These did not seem to have the same problems as the Akiruno Fish. So I think there are other reasons for the action besides pedestrian access.
Hi, @NianticGiffard .
After several applications, an IntelMap and a field survey, we have come across one that bears the name "Manhole". So, I'd like to share that information with you.

Even if they are painted in several colours,It's a Mass-produced products.
If you see a nomination which you think is not worthy to enter the game, then you should rate it with one star and therefore deny it.
Hi @MagicalThorn-ING! We have reviewed the report and have taken action on the 5 Wayspots and the 5 Wayfinders in accordance with our policies. Thanks for helping us maintain the quality of the Wayspots.
Hi, @NianticGiffard .
As usual, there are a number of Wayfinders in Japan who apply for manhole covers, which are just mass-produced products.
I will putting this report into your hands.
Viale JS, 4-17-6 Nishi-Shirai, Shirai-City, Chiba-Pref., Japan
17-5, Yawata 5-chome, Suruga-ku, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture
566 Shin Fukuoka, Fukuoka-machi, Takaoka-City, Toyama-Pref.

589-2, Kaminoseki, Sekikawa-mura, Iwafune-gun, Niigata-Pref.
3-14-13 Nishi-Shirai, Shirai-city, CHIBA-Pref.
Moreover, it seems that this mass-produced product has already become a Wayspot in this vicinity.
This is a clear example of how coloured but mass-produced manhole covers are just that - mass-produced.
