Name/Location edit resolved a over a year ago suddenly back in Wayfarer review queue

Hello. I've got an odd issue that popped up this week much to the disappointment of the local pokemon players especially. Any insight on why this might have happened would be appreciated :)

For some background; several years ago I had submitted a name and location edit for very old (pre-pogo) wayspot of a large local park. The edit was to rename the park to it's proper name and to move it to the park entrance to better reflect the entrance photo and wayspot for the park being at the entrance.

Edits in our area are VERY slow as they are in many places but ~april 2020 to our delight both the name change and location edit were approved. I got the two edit approved emails one for name edit and one for location edit. Some time later someone in our pokemon community submitted the playground which ended up getting approved last year now that it was not too close to the other wayspot.

Fast forward to the last couple weeks and a handful of other locals who actively review in Wayfarer started to see that same edit for the park once again. I did not get my own edit but from what someone showed me it was 100% definitely my old fully resolved edit back in the system both with the new/old name options and the current/old location options. This made no sense as by all account both the name and location edits were resolved well over a year ago.

A few days ago I suddenly got a single email for this wayspot edit saying my edit was approved. We noticed the name was still correct but checking the intel site the portal moved back to its original pre-2020 location. The following day the wayspot completely vanished from pokemon and ingress. I assume this was due the updated movement rules where it was now within 20m of the playground wayspot added last year so perhaps some automated system process the next day killed the entire wayspot...just a guess there but that would make sense.

Now that the portal is gone I know I can just go resubmit that park again in the old proper location and hope it gets approved in a couple months time but I'm worried about how this happened.

To be clear I'm not disputing the move itself (though I think its odd folks would think between placing a wayspot for a large park at the park entrance which matches the cover photo folks vs place it directly on top/next to an existing playground wayspot they would think the latter is the better choice but anywho...LOL) and not disputing the fact it was likely deleted due after the move due to the moved location being too close to something else....My concern is why did an edit which absolutely 100% was fully resolved a year and a half ago suddenly show back up in queue? Seems very odd perhaps a bug or something with all the recent wayfarer changes? We've been getting several very old edits back in recent weeks so perhaps something is being done in the backend there and this closed edit somehow reopened?

Anywho any feedback would be appreciated:)

  • Hey @Justibear-ING,

Could you please more details regarding this issue? A screenshot of the email you recently received and title & location of the Wayspot in question should be enough for us to look into your report.

    Thanks,

Digging through my emails I can happily provide more info @NianticAaron :)

    Wayspot Name: Lewisville Park

    Original name/location edits submitted Mar 3, 2019

Both were approved on Apr 16th, 2020. Name changed from Glenmore Park -> Lewisville Park and location changed from 46.102886,-64.757541 to 46.102973,-64.758039

In early Aug 2021 someone reported to me seeing the same edits in review queue suddently.

On Aug 21, 2021 I got the below location edit email and the portal moved from 46.102973,-64.758039 back to it's original pre-april 2020 location 46.102886,-64.757541. Portal completely vanish a day or so later.

    city: Moncton

    Country: Canada

    Recent edit email received:

anything else you need please let me know. Much appreciated :)

To add from another thread I found out there may be a bug where some moved portals disappear from intel but still remain in game(s)...so it's possible this portal didn't actually get removed it's just not showing up in intel...I won't be able to physically go check until saturday though.

If it's still there in ingress then that makes resubmitting it not an option as it's a dupe so maybe its in part a move dispute but as noted I'm more concerned why the edit was still opened causing this to move back as that location edit was settled a year and a half ago :(

Whoops couple errors in my dates above but I can't seem to edit it yet.

It was early Aug 2021 someone reported to me seeing the same edits in review queue suddenly after it being a year and a half that the edit was completed and Aug 21, 2021 I got the new email saying the edit was completed.

I notice now the new email says Apr 16, 2020 as the submit date of that edit...this stands out to me as that's the exact same day the original name and location edits were both approved. This is very strange. Seems like there was a new edit opened on that portal the same day as the previous edits were both approved but that makes no sense that I would submit a new name/location edit after the previous ones were both successfully completed. Checking my community discord history as well I see record of me telling the local folks in that area the name and location were successfully changed on Apr 16, 2020 but nothing about a further name/location edit being submitted.

I know I submitted a new photo on that one a couple weeks later but I cant think of any reason why a new name/location edit would have been submitted the same day they old ones were correctly approved that doesn't make any sense to me offhand 🤔 ouf yeah any light you can shed on this would be great 😀

If wasn't a wayfarer bug not closing out or reopening my old edit and more an additional edit that for whatever reason got opened on the same day re-triggering the old edits to reviewers (which is certainly better a root cause than a wayfarer bug reopening closed edits LOL) then maybe their best bet would be for me to to request a location edit appeal/request in that thread to see if it can be moved back to the correct park entrance spot?

Quick update ;) I just had someone who lives near that park confirm in pokemon go the gym is still there and in the old/correct location and it hasn't moved or disappeared at all in the last 6 days. Almost seems like the wayspot didn't actually move even though right after I got the email on Aug 21st I saw it move in the ingress intel portal before it vanished on the site (moved waystops missing in intel site seems like that's a common intel bug right now).

I'll be able to physically confirm tomorrow if the ingress portal is still there and if it's in the old (correct) or new (incorrect) location. In any case with seeing the portal move in intel but the pokemon gym didn't get affected at all in the 6 days days something weird is up somewhere :)

I'm hoping this was just some wayfarer/intel blip with a ghost edit and the waystop didn't actually move and is still in the old/correct location for pokemon and ingress.

Physically went there this morning...I can confirm the pokemon go gym is still there in the existing correct location where its been the last year and a half since the initial move; the ingress portal did move to the pre-april 2020 incorrect location, and the portal is still completely missing from intel website. Thats messed up :)

I'll wait for you review findings on whats up with this one. anything else you need please let me know. Thanks!

I forgot to circle back on this one myself @Roli112-PGO. To confirm a few days or so after my last email the portal moved back to it's proper pre-Aug 21, 2021 location at the entrance to the park. I'm told that the pokemon wayspot never moved at all and remained a gym.

So rather strange what all happened here but at this time ingress and pokemon both have the wayspot sitting in the right spot where it was moved to on Apr 16th, 2020.

  • Hello @Justibear-ING and @Roli112-PGO,

Sorry for the delayed response. This issue might have been caused due to some backend changes we made around the same time. It's reassuring to know that the Wayspot is back at the correct location. Moreover, you should not experience this issue going forward.

    Thanks,
