Barbershops

I submitted a Barber Shop for a nomination that has been in business since the 1950's in the original building. It was rejected for not meeting eligible requirements. Barber shops are social hotspots. Why would this be rejected? Please clarify.

Some are, some are not. There is no way a reviewer can confirm that a particular barber shop is anything more than a generic business.
But generic business is not valid?
It is up to the nominator to show that it is more than a generic business. Most barber and beauty shops are not social gathering places.
Barber shops are no more social hotspots than every spa, nail salon, department store, etc. Just because you talk to someone there doesn't make it social.
If it's been operating since 1950's it might have some historical significance to the area. But that is up to you to demonstrate as a nominator.
Not necessarily. In Black communities, Black barber shops are often a cornerstone and serve a greater purpose than a haircut and light conversation. If a barber shop is both historical and has these deeper social connections, it could be a great candidate.

I agree that a barbershop can be a social hub, especially in an urban, black American community, but the nominator is still the one who needs to make that case within the nomination. The blanket statement “Barber shops are social hotspots” is overly-general and largely inaccurate.
Thanks for the feedback. I have learned from my rejected nominations and several have been approved when I resubmitted them with more precise and accurate information.
