Shelly Warehouse
Sydney NSW
NOT ACCEPTED
2021-10-14
Description
Renovated "federation warehouse" built 1909 with Chicago industrial influence. Heritage listed in 2016. It was conserved in 2020 along with the next door Heritage listed Electricity Substation 164. In the publicly accessible lobby a glass frontage looks down into the substation. The building is now heritage commercial with cultural space and a new "cloud style lightbulb" extension above. The main entrance is on Clarence St and the building stretches down to Kent
Location
Clarence St at King St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
Supplemental Information
The building is also rare for its integrity, internally and externally, compared to warehouses of a similar period in Sydney. The warehouse also represents a good and intact example of the Federation warehouse style which makes reference to the ‘Chicago Style’. There is a meeting space inside lobby where Sydney City Council heritage listing and building information is placed. In the lobby the original warehouse doors to the substation appear to float in the newly created large high ceilinged open lobby. I am going to the Sydney CBD this weekend. I want to see this building and that plaque in the supporting photo for myself! And also all the changes since the last time I was in the city (probably 5 months ago).
Seeing your nominations inspires me to check this out. Sorry it got knocked back again.
There is a meeting space inside lobby where Sydney City Council heritage listing and building information is placed.
Does this mean there is a sign or history/info board? If so, use it. Even if looks boring, better picture can be added later.
I think your description is too much.
’Built in 1909 as a federal storage building, the Shelley Warehouse architecture, inspired by the Chicago Industrial style, earned it heritage listing in 2016 and conservation in 2020.’
...and looks pretty much like any other block of offices in the city.
This nomination needs more than "it's an old building" to get through. Go for the sign, not a "generic office block".
Indeed there is @Kellerrys-ING! There is a history info plaque at the base of this building, in which the OP has attempted previously.
But instead of following everyone's advice of not cropping the plaque as it looked, they have decided to submit a photo of the whole building instead. The plaque is substantial, it just needs to be framed and the photo taken correctly.
oscarc1 said: In the supplemental photo, is that a plaque? If so, nominate the plaque above all else.
Please take the advice truly into consideration.
Why not Nominate the building next door - "Electricity Substation No. 164" looks a much better bet to get through as a Waypoint and easier sell then the OP submission - it's a museum and there is nice website.

@HaramDingo-ING
The entrance to the substation is on the Kent street Side. The substation itself is a listed building too.
The City of Sydney information signage are in the Clarence Street Shelly Warehouse side
There is a heritage lsting plaque on the outside
I like the spot. And what they have done. Very interesting
Thank you everyone for your feedback ;-)
PS. My main point
Was rejection as a living object. Why?
Secondly. How was Title and Description wrong.... ;-)
