Wayfarer 4.4 Release Notes - Last release of the year!

Hello Explorers! We’re excited to ship Wayfarer 4.4. Here’s what it includes
New “What is it” question
As we mentioned in the November Product Update, Wayspot nomination and edit experiences in Pokémon GO will soon include a question on “category”, which is the same as the “What is it” question in the Wayfarer reviews. With this update, nominations will require a Wayspot category to be selected.
So we’ve updated the ‘What is it?’ question on nomination reviews, to include the categories submitted with the nomination. We’re changing this to be a yes/no response, as well as providing a drop-down for you to select another as you see fit.
Wayspot categories that are submitted with the Nomination will help reviewers better understand what you are nominating. Category submissions on live Wayspots will be optional as with other edits, and will be funneled through to Wayfarer for you to validate as well. They will not contribute to your Agreements since we don’t technically generate agreements on them.
Nomination Appeals
Your rejected nominations may be appealed from within Wayfarer! When you view the details of a rejected contribution, you’ll see the top 2 reasons the community rejected it, and a button to Appeal this decision to Niantic.
You’ll be allowed to appeal contributions one-time per contribution, to Niantic. Appeals will be limited to one (1) appeal per 30d from the date of your first appeal. In addition, you’ll have a chance to further explain in writing why your nomination should be accepted by Niantic.
Appealed nominations cannot be edited after it has been submitted to Niantic, but you can track the status from your Nomination Management page. Upgrades may not be applied to Appealed nominations. Niantic will review your appeal and send you an email when a decision has been made, with a written explanation from us. This does not apply to contributions that have been reported. Review times are not guaranteed at this time, but we will be tracking it over time to see whether the appeal limits could be adjusted.
Update: Note that when you submit an appeal you will not currently get an email confirmation that you've appealed. Please check your Nominations Management page for updates.
Anonymous and Private Abuse Reporting
You’ll now be able to submit abuse reports to us from the Help pages in Wayfarer! We heard a lot of prior feedback directly to us that abuse reporting in the forum made many of you feel vulnerable, especially in cases that involve trolling and harassment. With this new method, you’ll be able to quietly report things to us. It also allows us to better ticket and track each report, rather than using the forum features to do so. Look for the chat button on the bottom right of the Help page to open up a reporting flow. This chat will remain on screen as you navigate to other pages, until you close the chat or reload the website. We’ll temporarily keep the General Discussion & Appeals categories abuse discussion in the Forum open until the end of the year, and will be addressing those reports at a slower rate than through the Help page. Please do not submit duplicate reports during the transition period.
Safe Exploring!
Comments
Interesting update, especially regarding how the appeals system works. Thank you for sharing!
Re: the new abuse reporting chat - what does it mean for the Google form? Should we now use the chat feature rather than the form?
Niantic will review your appeal and send you an email when a decision has been made, with a written explanation from us.
Can you preview for us how detailed these responses will be? Just "we stand by the decision that this is ineligible" & "we have overturned this rejection" or...actual curated replies to the rejection? Can we appeal an appeal? At this time, I see no way to attach additional photos, could that be worked in for situations where location accuracy may be important?
@NianticTintino what do you mean by "abuse discussion open until the end of the year"? There isn't a specific section in the forums for it. So just dicussions in general regarding abuse?
We’ll temporarily keep the abuse discussion in the Forum open until the end of the year
@NianticTintino are you able to clarify what you are referring to by “abuse discussion”? Do you mean abuse threads that are started in the general area? Just curious what will be going away next month.
Thank you!
also FYI i wasted my appeal by trying to be "1st"... i wish i knew the 30 day limit before it was activated. Plenty of us probably made poor choices not thinking it was going to be limited to only 1 per 30 days.
Guess I can appeal something for the next 5 years :/
Yes, sorry if that sounds confusing. I'll edit it now to make it clearer but yes, discussions in general.
Same.
I understand the limit, especially during this initial phase of the feature, but it still sucks. Especially with nominations that have already been rejected several times over a long period of time.
Also wondering:
You’ll be allowed to appeal contributions one-time per contribution, to Niantic.
I'm sure it's possible to continue feeling like more information may be necessary. In a personal appeal of a Niantic rejection, they stood by the rejection when I provided additional support but then folded when I rode told them their rejection reason was based on pre 3.1 guidance. I'm sure Niantic reps don't want to have to needlessly debate with everyone, but I'm still not sure just one rebute is the best way.
@NianticTintino I assume that when we appeal a nomination, the Niantic decision maker will see the entirety of our nomination as it was presented during review (supporting info and all), plus the additional comment we can type?
What is error E2 when appealing?
Im interested in the expected time an appeal needs until you will recieve a result. Is it FIFO? Is there a period where all the appeals are getting processed?
And also @NianticTintino should we write appeals in our native language or should we stick to english? Might be important for everyone.
Please add a note to the appeals function stating the 30 limit
It seems that some people have already submitted two appeals. Perhaps there is a delay between the completion of the submission of the appeal and the hiding of the appeal button.
I posted something about this before I saw these 4.4 release notes but is stuck in moderation, but now you expect us to click Yes/No THREE separate times instead of just one? Really starting to feel the likeliness of RSI ramping up...
@NianticTintino Can i suggest a notification feature (like when you earn an upgarde), letting us know we have an appeal available, that way no time is wasted between an appeal becoming available and us becoming aware its been past 30 days.
to add to this... no email confirmation when submitting an appeal... so as far as i know there is no way to track which day your appeal was submitted.
I have to agree, I thought once I clicked yes on one option, the other two would automatically switch to no.
Disappointed to see that upgrades cannot be appealed. My upgraded cricket nets got rejected based on historical/cultural. I am sure cricket has been around for a while and it's very popular with people practicing their skill set all the time. There are many similar POI in my district. I have since resubmitted it and it just got into voting. But would like to see it possible that upgrades can be appealed as well.

First of all, it is great that this feature is finally online and thanks for that it worked, that the rollout did not have to be postponed until later. It is also clear that everything has to be brought in first, but it might be an advantage if you can submit your next appeal when the previous one has been processed. Because there are players who have a few more appeals and would therefore spend several years with them.
@RogueCheesecake-PGO - I might be misunderstanding you, but if you upgraded something and it got rejected, you can still appeal that. What we're saying above is that you can't apply an upgrade to an appeal to try to boost the appeal review time.
@Roli112-PGO - yep we actually have the notifications features in the roadmap but we are still a bit shorthanded and I wanted to get you all some useful features before the holidays rather than having you wait a few months for it have all the bells and whistles. Also so sorry you feel you wasted your appeal! Was hoping you'd wait for the announce first with the details, before clicking away.
@Gendgi-PGO - right, you can only appeal a nomination once in it's lifetime. On the appeal decision, if it is still a rejection, we will provide you with a rejection reason and a personal note, if necessary, to provide some insight.
@LukeAllStars-ING - yes please do so in English, but if not, we can use Google translate - thank you!
@HankWolfman-PGO - yes, we can see all the details of your nomination plus the extra message you send us with the appeal.
@kamikatze07-ING - do you still see that error now? I think you caught it while the parts were being rolled out.
Hope this helps clarify.
Thanks for the reply. I sincerely have hopes for appeals, but my example provided was an honest one.
An appeal was made on my behalf and initially rejected to "criteria" that is unpublished and outdated, but after a reminder to the team the rejection was overturned. I still have concerns that appeals through this workflow will be handled similarly. I suspect we'll have to cross that when it happens. I understand the reasoning of not wanting to draw appeals out longer than necessary.
@Gendgi-PGO - right, let's see how this goes and measure on your side and mine, then identify improvements for later. Thanks for your understanding!
@Danbocat-PGO is it the same team doing internal reviews, doing the appeals?
Are internal reviews and now appeals checked for possible abuse, and is the abuse able to be dealt with by internal reviewers. Do the internal reviewers have the access and ability to investigate further abuse by checking other nominations made by the person of the nomination they are currently reviewing?
@NianticTintino Interesting updates and new features, but I’m dissapointed you’re still not paying attention to the UX of Wayfarer which was crippled with the ”new layout” which was released some months ago. The desktop-version is fairly usable altho we seriously miss the satellite map for Wayspot location in ”nominations” and a scale bar for determining the distance to other POIs - still don’t understand why you had to remove these or was it just lack of thinking with the new layout?
But the biggest issue is how it works on mobile browsers. The auto-zoom when selecting the wayspot category, and layout not fitting horizontally on the device viewport with many nominations when the portal picture or description is big enough is just terrible. This can be easily observed with an iPhone Safari in a couple of minutes so please take a moment to test your product and polish these annoyances.
It says that "Appealed nominations cannot be edited after it has been submitted to Niantic".
Well, as they are "Not accepted" they can not be edited before appealing either. All one can do is to add the explanation, which is good of course, but the wording might let one to think that you can edit your unaccepted nomination before appealing it.
@NianticTintino I tried to appeal a nomination but got error E2 cannot appeal or something. The appeal went through but idk if my reason for appeal explanation was submitted or not because the appeal explanation text isn't shown when I click on the nomination. Could you check whether or not my reason for appeal text was submitted.
The appealed nomination is called
"Aurora Park Ballfield - West"
If appeal text was not submitted please add the following text as appeal reason if possible. Thank you.
______
Not a duplicate. Streetview at coordinates 39.754116,-104.874490 shows the two separately fenced ballfields at a distance, other streetviews and satellite imagery are outdated. The West and North ballfields share a plot of land between N Dayton Way and Elmira St, however, they are two individually fenced ballfields. I believe the lack of a sign on the already accepted North ballfield, and the outdated Google maps imagery, led reviewers to believe that the West and North ballfields were a single ballfield. As stated above, that is incorrect; they are two separate, individually fenced, POIs.
@NianticTintino @Danbocat-PGO Would you consider dropping the 30 days cooldown IF, and only if the appeal results in an approval of the waypoint?
