Why can't we withdraw "in voting" nominations?

What is the logic behind not allowing us to withdraw nominations already in voting? Frequently we notice errors in our submissions or we notice that somebody else got theirs approved after our own submission. It seems like a win all-around to let us remove these from slowing down the system where nominations may take years to go through.
So what's the logic? We used to be able to. Why the conscious decision to revoke that ability?

Adding to this, withdrawing appeals should be an option as well.
It is a waste of time if in the meantime the appeal got approved by you or a different submitter.
I came here just to make this point myself. I've had overlap of successful appeals and resubs myself (one where the resub is in voting but the appeal was accepted, one where the appeal is in voting but the resub was accepted) and it feels like such a waste to have valuable appeal time used up on those.
I think you shouldn't be able to appeal a rejection that is less than six months old. That would give most people time to resubmit.
It would also keep people from immediately appealing every rejection. Give them time to ask others' opinions. Often when you do something else for a bit and come back - you see with new eyes that it isn't a good nomination, or a way to make it clearer and greater.
The only concern I have is that it was posted after the question period. If this question is unanswered, could you please post it again in the next AMA or new discussion?
Well don't bring that up!
There is no need to seek other people's opinions when a shrine comes back rejected as a "natural feature". That's just means the rejection system is deeply flawed. Waiting 6 months won't make it any better. Your only recourse is to resubmit and hope the system's wonks don't get you again.
Exhibit A:
Yeah, some rejection reasons given are just wild. Trail markers rejected as "Fake Nomination", a mural in a restaurant rejected for "Pedestrian Access", a painting in a store rejected as "Location Sensitive", a mural in a mall rejected as "Location Inappropriate"... all of these are real rejection reasons I've gotten for real nominations, I could keep adding to the list, and I haven't even been at this for that long. I'm hoping that the appeals system will show Niantic the flaws in the system, and the best way to do that is by... appealing those nominations, as soon as possible!
Plus, it's worth noting that not all nominations can be resubbed as easily. If I'm on vacation, I probably wouldn't be back to that location to resubmit something in six months, so the wait would be pointless.
Seeing as this one blew up so much, I can't help but add the follow-up:
The community asked multiple times why and to revert back. With something so easy to change, why ignore the request until an AMA and not create the easy "win" to help us feel even the slightest bit heard and appreciated?
"Fake Nomination" can be the rejection reason for trail markers that are the self-adhesive sticker type that they use for steel lampposts. There's not really much we can do about that, except not submit them.
I can see where you're coming from there, but I'm not sure I agree, and regardless, that wasn't the kind of trail marker in play here--they're wooden posts with the number carved into them. Besides, the point isn't that one example, but that there seems to be a pattern of odd rejection reasons, which may indicate that Niantic needs to clear criteria up and/or make them more accessible to reviewers, and appeals may be a good way of getting that data to them.
😂😂😂😂😂
Completely disagree with that one. I have something in voting just now, a grade c listed building, I'm pretty sure it will fail despite me explaining g why it's listed (the design of the building and the architect) as well as putting the listing itself and a biography of the architect in. I'm intentionally holding my appeal as I am 75% certain it's gonna fail as most listed things get rejected in my area, usually takes me 4 or 5 attempts to get them in, so if it does fail, I'm appealing it right away

Exhibit A:
Ugh. I would really like to withdraw a current nomination that's in voting. I didn't realize the name of the structure I nominated was of a foundation whose name changed due to historical controversy. I didn't even know who it was named after, but after researching, I agree that the name change was justified. The man was ethically horrible.
But since it's in voting, I can't do anything about it, and I doubt (if it's accepted) that a name change would be accepted since the old name is on the sign. I don't think there's a place that we can explain why we're making edits to give people more context. I regret nominating it, frankly.
I don’t understand not being able to withdraw nominations in voting or appeals either. It’d help lessen the queue.
I submitted a few stops that I later learned were already submitted and approved but not on the map. I would’ve withdrew them but instead had to wait for months as they went through the process and finally get labeled as duplicates.
I also have one in appeals that was rejected as low quality. It was a lit sign taken at night, not blurry or pixelated but I’m guessing the reviewer rejected because it was taken at night. Someone else has since resubmitted and it was approved. Now mine will have to go through appeals just to get rejected as a duplicate when I would just withdraw my appeal.
And I’m getting some strange rejections too. Had one submission rejected for a license plate on a passing car in my supporting photo. There were no cars at all in the main photo.
I nominated something 18 months ago which isn’t close to home. It’s probably been in voting for a year. I didn’t upgrade it because there were others much closer to home that I could actually interact with. So I’m back in the area today and see someone else got it approved. So can’t withdraw it. Meaning people will continue to vote on it even though it’s going to be a duplicate. Certainly these are the ripe of examples where we should be able to withdraw something in voting
It would be nice to edit information due to typos, etc.
I feel that you should be able to appeal right away. I had two submissions that were tagged as duplicates. If the judges would’ve looked at the pokestops on the map properly they would’ve noticed that they were never a pokestop. One was a playground structure and the other an old fire hall that was built in 1851. Also never a pokestop.
When you submit a nomination, you're submitting a wayspot for the Niantic Lightship database. You're not submitting a Pokéstop, no matter what the wording within Pokémon Go says.
Not all wayspots in the Niantic Lightship database are eligible to make it into Pokémon Go, based on a rule that limits level 17 S2 cells to contain only a single Pokéstop or Gym.
If you submit something that exists in the database but doesn't meet the cell requirements for Pokémon Go, then this will correctly get marked as a duplicate (reviewers see every wayspot in the database, not just those which appear in Pokémon Go) and it still won't appear in Pokémon Go.
When you're attempting to submit a new nomination and you've got the map open to select the location of your pin for your nomination, you can see existing wayspots within around 100 metres of the location where you're currently stood (and yes, that means you'll need to actually be at the location to see potential duplicates). Any which are in Pokémon Go will appear as a blue Pokéstop icon, and any which aren't in Pokémon Go will appear as an orange Wayfarer icon. You can tap on these to see what the wayspots are and whether you're attempting to submit something that already exists.
So if you've had something marked as a duplicate that's not appearing in Pokémon Go, you may want to go back there and check if it appears as an orange Wayfarer icon when trying to submit something.
