What say you about the eligibility of mom-and-pop bookstores? Meaning, ones that aren't chains like Barnes & Noble, but are instead locally owned and operated, and more than likely only have one or two locations total. Thanks!
They don't inherently meet the eligibility criteria simply for existing.
I might vote for it if the nomination did a good job telling the story of the business and connecting what they do to criteria. But it’s not an automatic approval.
Do they have game nights, book club meetings, or classes of some kind? if it is a place to hang out and socialize, explain that in your nomination.
Ok out of curiosity can someone explain what a mom and pop bookshop is, as opposed to any other bookstop.
I have never heard the term and my first impression on reading title of the thread, was that it might be a euphemism for adult bookshop 🤔…but the comments make me think it’s something else 😂
@Elijustrying-ING A "mom & pop" shop is a small, independent business usually owned and run by an individual or a family. They typically only have a single location and their target market is usually the local community.
As for their eligibility, it depends. They aren't inherently eligible, but they sometimes become a local social hub. If they have local authors give talks at the shop, the science fiction club meets there twice a month, or they're sufficiently famous that they're a destination then any of those things could tip the balance in favor of it being a community hotspot.
"Mom and Pop" is just another way to say that a business is locally owned.
Thanks, just shows how different phrases can develop 😂
Many are owned by a married couple. So, if you're being familiar (vs formal or neutral), you'd call them "Mom and Pop". Or you might say: "this store is run by someone's Mom and Pop". The term spread to include such places even if the ownership isn't a married couple.
yes they meet the criteria if they are long lasting businesses. a chain book store wouldn't meet the criteria
From the Wayspot Criteria:

- Unusual or unique local shops
If that bookstore is unique or unusual, it sounds like a textbook Wayspot candidate to me
