Niantic desperately wants their army of unpaid volunteers to scan as much of the real world as possible. Scanning has been a feature in Ingress for a long time and until recently the only benefit that you got from doing it is that a stat went up on your profile. Ingress is all about controlling the board by capturing and connecting portals, and up until recently portal scans have had exactly zero impact on Ingress gameplay-- Ingress doesn't have the camera-based AR that PoGo and Pikmin do. Now they've added some sort of mechanism where if enough people scan a portal it becomes fracked, but spending a dollar seems much easier and there's still nothing in the game that would use those scans. Of course, it's not like PoGo players typically used AR, and I only learned today that Pikmin Bloom has a way to turn it on.
App sounds nice but I don't see any value in it by now.
Why don't you guys at Niantic spend some time on getting better mechanics against cheating and abusing wayfarer first? Many people are disillusioned and unsatisfied because of cheating and this App is just something new that won't help.
There was a comment by Tintino in one of the recent posts that refers to using the scanned info on the game board. So I am imaging that the 3D image from scans will appear on the game board itself. So yes they need that data. I can only imagine it looks extremely patchy.
I presume take up in ingress is low (I haven’t been tempted to spend time doing them), in spite of some rewards take up in PoGo is low, as is quality.
I can see that the pool of wayfarer reviewers is likely to contain a higher portion of people interested in doing a good scan. It makes more sense/logic to have a scan or 360 as part of the submission process. Gives greater from start, but leaves the current database behind.
Maybe Niantic need to review and dip hand in pokey for once?
Probably because Niantic changes cell rules abruptly. See all the pokestops that disappeared due to location edits that were proposed before the rule change and accepted after rule change.
Players fear that working to make a pokestop better will result in the lost of said pokestop. How to blame them?
It might help stop this sort is misunderstanding if Nia was open and upfront about the “rules” that everyone knows about about dare not speak its name 🤔
The fact that the rules were figured out, and then players immediately began to figure out ways to get around the rules doesn't encourage Niantic to give any details about them.
if people are determined to break rules and manipulate things in their own favour then they will find a way. I don’t think pretending those rules don’t exist and being an ostrich improves things.
officially we haven’t been told about 1 stop per S2 level 17 cell - so we end up explaining endlessly as to why something won’t appear. I’m pretty sure that it was slip that lead to confirmation of the 20m rule in ingress.
Several in here quickly submitted waypoints when the error occurred and that wasn’t being enacted.
So it would help understanding and save time if we had a set of rules that would allow a sensible response of -
these are the rules and
a change will trigger the rules to recalculate (something that previously didn’t happen).
I just come from a position that openness creates clarity.
anyway with lightship, the application of rules is now solely with each individual game so I don’t think a discussion really belongs here
So, if we are getting a Wayfarer app, does this mean Waypoint submissions will be removed from the individual games? I can hear the screaming now. "But I don't have my 40 on Ingress and my 40 on PoGo" - screaming gets louder. "But if we only have a single Wayfarer app, how can I use the 40 nominations for each of my 8 PoGo accounts" - toys get thrown out of pram.
Agree with some of the above comments - please please please keep the ability tro review etc on a PC, I know I miss things on a tine phone screen, and it's much much easier to have maps and tranlate and Google search on the go on a PC, as well as being able to see photos "full size".
I don't see any problem with the number of submissions. They know which games are linked to that Niantic account and if you're eligible or not to use wayfarer in that game, so they can sum 40+40 for those that play both games.
And multiaccounters will do the same thing that they do today. login with one account, use it, log out and switch to another account. Nothing will change if they move nominations to a single app.
The biggest drawback for a wayfarer app will be that people now will have to install Yet Another App in their phones, and if they keep on with their "let's change things without understanding how people use it" and move reviewing to an app, they will lose all the people that review on a PC and that can't bear a small phone screen. Hopefully this time Ambassadors will be able to stop Niantic on their tracks.
Let's repeat this one thousand times: Reviewing must always remain a website, there's nothing that an app can provide that it isn't possible with a modern webapp and a native app is much more restrictive than a webapp and has lots of drawbacks.
It would be great to have a submission tool with a map that had a Pokémon Go grid overlay so that those of us who care could, say, easily tell if it matters whether we submit a PoI in the middle of a gazebo or on the edge.
@Hosette-ING I definitely think casual submitters need to have access to nominate/edit within the game. That needs to be retained.
Just the app is a chance for Niantic to really experiment with supporting wayfarering as it's own thing. There's such an opportunity to support nominating.
So two systems in game Nom/edit ... And a power app for the serious.
scanning is the most boring thing ever, most portals u cant even scan proper due to people there or too big object.. and it just drains your battery and cell data.. for what purpose ? we need new gameplay features for ingress and scanning isnt one of them... its just a boring chore that doesnt affect gameplay whatsoever.....
More vigorously enforcing existing rules does not mean that the rules changed. And it wasn't a small minority of players that were abusing move edits. The abuse was wide-scale and was being actively promoted on Reddit, such as r/TheSilphRoad and on these forums.
They explicitly stated that they implemented safeguards to prevent people from using location edits to artificially create clusters of Pokestops. That isn't a change to the rules, that is eliminating an exploit.
I think scanning will proof that a waypoint is linked to a real object in the real world. The way spots I can not scan is because they are removed or on the wrong spot.
I would like it to be a reincarnation of Field Trip as it once existed.
In addition to Field Trip, it would be even better if we could nominate, delete, and edit wayspots, scan wayspots, and display a map that can be scaled down and enlarged freely, like Catan.
And in the future, it would be great if AR glasses could be supported, so that when we approach a wayspot, its details pop up in the glasses and lead us to a new place.

The rules didn't change. It was that players found a way around the rules (ie exploit) and Niantic shut it down.
The rules didn’t change. Players abused the system to try and make the map not follow the rules and then acted shocked when they got re-implemented.
Why should they? As soon as players figured it out, some leapt to immediately abuse them.
Niantic know better by now I would think.
if people are determined to break rules and manipulate things in their own favour then they will find a way. I don’t think pretending those rules don’t exist and being an ostrich improves things.

Please make it so key words and phrases be banned, "There are no pokestops/gyms in the area" "We need more portals" "Please make a gym here"

Good point about the number of submissions.
That seems fair. I only sub in ingress as that is what I have always done.

I doubt they’d do that as you’re meant to be submitting to the database. Not just for the benefit of a singular game.
The rules DID change, because things that already were in game used to ignore other rules and used to stay on the gameboard. They changed this.
Only SOME players abused the system, but all of us payed for it.
@Hosette-ING I definitely think casual submitters need to have access to nominate/edit within the game. That needs to be retained.

They didn’t change. They were just re-implemented after abusers got away with stuff.

@PkmnTrainerJ-ING
i don’t understand drawing in the 80m play distance from POI.
What makes you say it was a minority and compare that size to those that abused POI
I wasn't aware of this existing up until now but listened to a couple and going to make my way through them. Thanks, great stuff!
Maybe a bit mean, I realise now that I am more awake. If I edit, it’ll get lost in the void, but I’ll give it a go.
Yay, it didn’t!

Yes. Awesome. Needed. Too bad itll get too many more newcomers this way.

Still a minority of the playerbase
