Scanning to 3D map objects was going to be used to do things like hide a Pokémon behind a POI or hide part of it but the pogo players would have to use the AR mode to get that benefit and next to nobody does that because of battery drain.
Selling the wayfarer POI & mapping info to other game studios so they can make their own games around the system is what Niantic are interested.
An announcement of an app is all well and good but with no info about what it will do, it's hard to get excited. The fact it seems more aimed at third party developer's who will use the POI API & to get us scanning existing POI more is worrying. It doesn't sound like it solves any current problems & assumes the work and goodwill of Wayfarer voters (or submitters?) for no benefit.
The website for reviewing is OS independent and will still need to be used & maintained. But on top of that an android and IOS app will have to be made/maintained and bug fixed too.
A better voting experience for those on mobile could potentially be made but all the chat of developers and scanning sounds like this app is not made for Wayfarers benefit.
I think Niantic should clarify what the app is supposed to do and what benefits it will give voters and/or submitters. Being too vague and allowing imaginations to run wild guessing for ages before clarifying it isn't going to do anyone any favours
There is nothing to stop someone spoofing their location to where a POI is while scanning the real object at a different location, wether they do it via a game or a dedicated app.
At the same time, just because something has not been scanned does not mean it does not exist, so POI cannot be removed based on no one ever scanning it.
It's just not that simple/black & white
An app exclusively to Wayfarer seems to be aewsome !!! (In the current situation, to make edits or submit photos, we must do it through Niantic Games indvidually, and, there is a lot of trouble because of that. Some POIs appear in one game, not in another. Besides that, sometimes you can submit changes in one game, but not on another, because of the user's level restriction) . Finally we will be able to "discover for real" (because, stupid algoritms in games, literally hide most of then) all the wayspots in the locations nearby. Moreover, we will also be able to submit photos, correct mispealings and make location edits (this last one, the most important that I presume). Next step should be (I know, you will tell me that, each game has his own rules and bla bla bla, BUT, in the end, everything is connected to Niantic !!) removing, or at least change, "the 20m rule" at Ingress (10m ? Or even 5m ?) and "the level 17 S2 cell" at Pokemon GO (maybe change to level 18 S2 cell ?)
I think everyone is misunderstanding the purpose of having scans on the Wayfarer app.
How many people upload Photospheres with their nominations? How often is that the advice here?
That's data Niantic could have, but they're giving it to Google instead.
I think this is setting the ground to allow scans on portal nominations.
I hope they don't start pushing scans more because I live in a city and I don't relish taking pictures of people in public. It can already be hard enough to get a single pic with nobody in it at some locations. I'd likely stop submitting entirely in some areas if it became expected.
The 'scan/scans' terminology has only ever been used by Niantic in relation to 3D scans/AR data, so it's easy to make the assumption it's for that.
If it is a photosphere type scan then it could be useful possibly. I always battery level issues if I either photosphere or scan a few things when out and about without a battery pack so it's far from ideal having to supply them. Let alone the additional time.
let the submit button simply link u to the App Store, easy fix.
Very excited to learn more details about this app. Is there any way that we can receive an email notification about this as a reminder?
Thats still needing the app to be installed and then booted up. On top of that, a lot of Samsung phones would then close the game in the background while submitting (it's a feature of theirs to close games down while on another app to save battery and ram) meaning people will get frustrated and just stop submitting
In that case keep everything as is & simply make the app optional for those interested in an amplified experience
My iPhone sometimes closes the app when I switch between other app, most notably the camera but also safari.
Or make submitting accessible from the app instead of the game
If you'd like to increase the chance of your submissions being accepted, I suggest you post a few in the Nomination Improvement section so forum members can take a look and give you tips to help them pass. Imho, getting submissions accepted will ultimately feel better than being angry about it.
Which leads back to the issue that people might not download the app or even if they do not wanting to waste time opening it because they would rather play the game
I can agree with that. I know I don’t mind, I’ll submit stuff regardless either way. I’m all for making it easier for everyone else whichever way everyone else prefers. Maybe they could allow submitting from the app & in game. It’d be cool to even allow people to submit from the Wayfarer Website as well. Any way we can get people to actually get out & explore, the better. The better game at this time to just explore is Ingress just because you can see all of the POI & learn to the capacity while having fun. I started out playing Ingress but have become more involved with Pokémon over time. I love that we all come together to help one another here. That’s the best part about this community. We are one big team with a common goal. We all need to work together more & help each other more & it will make all platforms better for all of us. If we all keep working to teach people in communities around the world we will better the game. We all already have. I’m sure every person here has probably helped in one way or another. The community has grown a lot since it’s inception & it will only get better. One day we may be able to see all POI in Pokémon as well. Who knows what the future may hold. 🤞 For now, oh well though. Can’t complain regardless. Honestly Niantic has created a game unlike no other. It’s insane to imagine how many POI’s actually exist in Niantics database. That’s a lot to maintain. They’re doing a great job to be completely honest
They clarified on Twitter that they don’t plan to remove it from the games;
so it is up to the player/user whether they use the game or separate Wayfarer app.
POIs are often big. A baseball field for example is huge with many many places you can legitimately stick the POI. If a submitter knew the cell rules when they submitted, they could have picked an equally valid spot. This would have removed any rational to move a POI if the place was picked originally.
So you also approve of players exploiting location edits to move Wayspots to "empty" S2 cell just so another Wayspot can be included or when players were moving Wayspots from accurate locations to inaccurate locations that were in a "free cell", then move them back to their original accurate locations once the Wayspot was "promoted" to a pokestop or gym? Because that is what players were doing to get around the spacing rules. Niantic has since put in checks to prevent players from further exploiting the system.
How did you get that from their comment
Because that was what my comment was about that they were responding to.
@Cowyn2016-PGO A submitter would also have to care about the cell rules, and not everyone does. I just put things where I think they belong because I know that all of Niantic's games have different spacing rules and the games I'm playing now may not be the ones I'm playing in a year or five.
I didn't know this- being a pokemon go player, i see a lot of "players scared it'll remove stops" and whatever. Honestly, most players don't because it takes too long, battery gets suckked quick and most of us are just walking by. Anyway, my nomination has been in queue for almost a year lmao. Hopefully, it gets reviewed some time this decade with help from these updates.
You're rare. I don't think most people think about they might play a game where putting the play-structure pin on entrance will mean it will appear in a game they might play 5 years from now.... but putting it dead-center on structure will make it appear now to enjoy for the next 5 years.
But hey, I'm still salty that a local park literally has 3 submissions from me, that if I knew cell rules would all be in the park in game for people to enjoy now and for the last 2 years since I submitted them. As is none of them are, and the park looks far more empty than you'd expect.
Your comment was originally niantic should not share info on game board rules... and you focused on all the negatives.
However, my reply was niantic not sharing info on game board rules CREATES some of the negatives.
I have NO love for exploiting location exploits from Accurate to Inaccurate
However, if the move is from Accurate to EQUALLY accurate location because of game board rules, while Niantic says its against the "Rules" I place the blame directly on Niantic. As the submitter might have put the pin in 2nd spot if only Niantic was up front with rules. And since we enter POIs through the game we play, knowing the rules for how it effects the game we play is valid.
I agree with you on the "if both are equally accurate thing" but people on here are against it, so you've probably opened a can of worm with that
