This! All day. These are on designated walking trails. They actually encourage exercise. They’re not ruining the game play. The fact that 90% of these can’t be reached by car is a bonus, not a reason for rejection.
So let's pause and consider. WHY are trail markers eligible? It's not because most of them are beautiful works of art. They are "placemarkers" for the trail. You can't make an entire trail a wayspot any more than you can make an entire lake one. You need fixed points to submit and based on previous responses from Niantic it's pretty clear that trails are eligible because they get you moving and let you enjoy scenery, so having semi regularly spaced wayspots is ideal. That's why they added pedestrian bridges as acceptable back in 2019. Not because the bridges are cool, but because they take you places. Check back in the acceptance criteria where it says:
Must be a permanent physical, tangible, and identifiable place or object, or object that placemarks an area
Are these trail signs tangible objects that placemark an eligible area (a trail)? Yep! Remember when Niantic said that church signs could be eligible if a sufficient distance from the church? Same concept applies here, so long as the placemarkers for the trail are reasonably separated, they make great placemarkers and thus wayspots.
I Just got notice of another one getting approved this morning. It’s the 3rd one I’ve had that auto upgraded and was accepted. Guess people will have more stops when they’re on a trail actually walking and exercising. That’s a great thing!
i just got another one accepted with an upgrade, so that's reassuring. i have been writing mini essays on each of them as to why they're eligible though. 😅 plus extra info since some of these trails are not on the map yet. forever thankful for the city providing a good map of every trail and marker.
Supplemental Info:
This trail marker is on a recent extension of the paved Breckinridge Trail that was built last year. It does not show up on Wayfarer or Google’s maps yet. The BKA 100 trail markers are even newer. These are the standard city-issued trail markers of Richardson and surrounding cities in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. They do not obstruct emergency services. Trail markers are eligible waypoints according to Niantic that promote exercise and exploration. As per Niantic Giffard's recent criteria clarification on the Wayfarer forums, this marker is an example of figure A, "A marker with the trail name on the trail - Excellent (Correct)." This marker is on the Breckinridge Trail and includes the trail name (BKA stands for BrecKinridge A), and 101 is the unique number location. The city of Richardson has an updated map with all their trails and trail markers labelled. To view and compare locations, visit this link, search for Breckinridge Park on the map, and zoom in until they appear. The map can be enlarged and opened in a new window. https://www.cor.net/departments/parks-recreation/parks-trails/park-descriptions-locations // This trail marker is part of the extensive multi-use paved portion of the Breckinridge Trail in Breckinridge Park (there are some unpaved parts of the trail that are for hiking).
Couldn't have said it better myself! And yes, these markers are generally spaced reasonably far apart.
Side note about those footbridges, IMO they're good for more than just taking people places. Some of em have pretty nice views, enough to be a kinda scenic spot. Not all, but some.
@Himillsy-PGO off topic but do you know who keeps resubmitting the updates on the descriptions for Breckinridge Park? It’s super annoying! I don’t care if it’s Lot Q on the East Side anymore lol. I get them at least once per week.

Look on the bright side, description edits are usually quick and easy to review, and have higher chances of getting agreements.
That aside, most of those edits are to fix some of the waypoints having a very barebones description that was basically copy pasted a bunch of times.
Oh, I hear ya and I usually enjoy them. But it seems like there is an edit war going on with Breckinridge park.
