I currently have these upgrades. I stopped using them after a few bad rejections .
What are the chances that upgrades are ever used for anything other than upgrading?
Maybe redemption of rewards etc or should I just use them?

Interesting. Everything I've submitted for the last two years has been upgraded and I have a 100% approval rate for them.
Wayfarer is rarely updated as it is. Promised features such as tracking edits/image contributions are nowhere to be seen except referenced in e-mails. I would not expect that an upgrade would ever be converted into a broader Wayfarer currency that could be applied for various purposes.

Try applying an upgrade on a Friday - my observations are this is better timing
