At this point I just want the upgrade even though it should be more like I said a few days ago. Five upgrades and a appeal would have made way more people participate.
@NianticTintino-ING can I ask where the trail name is in the first or third photo here? It just says “public footpath”, which isn’t a named trail. It’s saying you can legally walk there without trespassing and without some farmer/landowner getting annoyed at you.
Explorers! The results have been posted and it's..... A LOT. So much so that I reached a limit I didn't know existed haha. Please go HERE for the final results and you'll see what I mean 😅 Looking forward to the feedback!
@NianticTintino-ING The ground plate with the clam on it is a trail marker for the famous religious St. James Trail leading to the spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. The submitter failed big time here failing to recognize that this is not art, and has now taken away a spot in the Art Category while it is actually a trail marker....
Thanks for calling that out. Made the correction. Meant to add it has the official county plate on it :) the first one reads something like "Kest" County Council and the second one is Hampshire Country Council.
I'd be interested in stats, since the percentages for the least picked categories were published, why not for the others? Maybe Niantic staff can add that information now
Thanks for your response. But that’s not the name of the trail. That’s the name of the local council who put up the sign and are responsible for the footpath. Can I please discuss this more with you via DM, to make my point clear?
As @PkmnTrainerJ-ING said - where is the trail name on the first and third photos?? All I can see written on those is a Council name, and "Public Footpath" which literally in the UK just means it's legal to walk there (usually not private property, though some footpaths in England are on privately owned land where the right to use that path exists and is maintained by them being walked at least once a year by someone, and in Scotland there is a wider right to roam without a specific precedent). It does not mean a trail to or from a particular place, or even a scenic route (public footpaths may be a bit of pavement between 2 rows of terraced houses, for example). The Council name is not a trail name either. It's a municipal name - Councils may be counties/boroughs (the second or third level of administration - depending if you class UK or England/Scotland/Wales/NI as the first) or they may be Town or Parish councils. But they are an area of land, not a trail to be followed!
ETA if you are going to say that all public footpaths are eligible, then you may as well say all pavements/sidewalks/pedestrian easements are eligible. They're pretty much the same concept. Somewhere that is legal, and theoretically safe, to walk.
Those are fairly decent as far as clarifications go. Not perfect, as a couple of other comments have said, but still much more in depth than I was actually expecting. I don't think what I submitted was picked for clarification (I didn't save the screenshot after I sent it and I've done more reviews lately than I've done in a while, so everything is a bit of a blur and I'm not 100% sure what I actually sent haha).
It would definitely be nice to get more detailed clarifications like this in future, though I appreciate it may have been a significant task to go through everything.
I do think maybe the upgrades should've been for anyone who did 100+ reviews and submitted the form, rather than only for those who picked one of the categories, but maybe that's something that can be changed for next time, assuming there's going to be a next time for this kind of challenge.
1 and 3 are pedestrian access signs, not trail markers. Just means you can walk there. Footpath is another word for pavement or sidewalk, just doesn't have a road running next to it. No consideration for different cultures from Niantic.
The new survey marker clarification is interesting. I'm curious to see what impact (if any) it has on voting practices across the state of New South Wales, Australia where these have historically been accepted in great numbers, and a somewhat recent clarification by the official Wayfarer Twitter account seemed to indicate that these kinds of POIs are okay so long as the descriptions meet the relevant criteria.
How is someone from the US supposed to know what they actually represent? There are a lot of differences. For you folks it's logical that these are not real trail markers, but for the people living abroad it can be quite difficult. Personally I'm quite happy I don't have to review in the UK. Too many post boxes which might be eligible or not depending on the age?! A lot of apparent eligible trail markers that some local wayfarer group has declared ineligible. Wayfarer is not black and white after all
With the new "all footpaths/sidewalk signs are good" from niantic, I have 50+ potential stops within 2 minutes walk of my house!!!! It will make the map boring, but they all look exactly like the example given, as I live in the area those pedestrian access signs are found.
Overall this was great. Happy that my category was picked, and though not my selected nomination image, my question was asked. (I would like to see all participants receive an upgrade, still.)
I really like framing a wayspot as "what story does this tell?" It really brings out the idea that nothing is automatically acceptable based on what it is. Too many nominators see a mural (or "mural"), and just write a description like "art." If I'm interacting with a wayspot in-game, I'd like to know its story, anything that's not self-evident from looking at the photo/reading the plaque. Any chance this "what story does this tell?" verbiage will be added to the main Wayfarer page in some form?
I have to say I am shocked by the strïp malls. In the US, this doesn't feel like a cultural hub or gathering place in the way an indoor mall is. I expect to see a huge influx of these nominations nonetheless.
Comments
Now we know who you really are
Or is it the one from Full Metal Jacket?
Soon o'clock, yet?
I don't know why they chose Friday before a holiday weekend to get the results out, but they did.
Maybe they selected a few days ago, and are just comparing the last few entrants to a small sunset of what came before.
West Coast 5:00 is 80 minutes from now.

Safe Exploring!
Thanks.
Enjoy that Parks and Plaza post at the end Wayfarers ...
Those photo's are pretty small, I can't even read the second trail marker for instance.
I know I do!
I won't get an upgrade then. The next one has to be better with that or I just won't review at the time to not feel disappointed later on.
Thank you for the well needed clarification about str!p malls.

Take my Insightful @NianticTintino-ING, I really enjoyed reading the detailed explanations! Well done! 😊

This is a great example of how criteria changes and varies massively by country.
Even for the ones you choose there are variations between Scotland and England as @pokestophope-ING pointed out.
Also good luck getting past reviewers on that Neptune trail.
Blue metal sign... blurry photo...1*.

As a bonus you can nominate all those grassy areas (parks) and industrial estate signs ( cultural hubs) on your way
its the weekend…….so we argue about trailmarkers 😂🙄
I have a shed load of popcorn to get through.🤪
Thanks for the write up of all these, it’s good to hear the thought processes.👏👏👏
Personally I’m going to sleep on it and consider them more tomorrow.

I love these clarifications.
