Fake Pokestop discovered during an expedition to Antarctica
Country? : Antarctica
Location: -82.862365,134.972248
Recently I was on an expedition and traversed the glaciers of Antarctica. I was equipped with satellite internet so I tried to turn on pokemon go and see if there were any pokemons. Everyone. shocked to discover a brazenly created fake pokestop. The place where it is located is covered with ice, and the only thing you can meet there are penguins. This Pokestop was made 5 years ago! How has no one noticed such a perfidious deception for so long? Please remove this pokestop and punish the person who added it, so that no one else wandering the wilderness of Antarctica will stumble upon this horrible scam in the future.
Btw: this pokestop shows some man with 3 eyes... how did this thing get through wayfarer?
Comments
This is weird, there are in fact 15 portals here, all within the same cell meaning just 1 pokestop.

Hmmmmmm i dunno man
Naprawdę byłem na Antarktydzie i gdy natknąłem się na ten Pokestop poczułęm się oburzony tak bezczelnym fejkiem. Używam google translator więc mój angielski nie jest zbyt dobry
Turns out Niantic moved these here from Camp Navarro so that folks could keep their keys so they're legit.

You PoGo'rs need to read up your Ingress history some more 😛
This portal was (as the description suggests) part of the 13MAGNUS Reawakens anomaly (event) in Ingress. The portals were moved to Antarctica instead of being deleted, so people could keep keys to the portals as memorabilia.
Why Antarctica? Because realistically nobody will ever be able to legitimately capture them. That way they can stay in people's inventories, and they can't accidentally be linked to if someone was to otherwise find and capture them.
Also, please keep in mind that spoofing is strictly against the Niantic/Pokemon Go terms of service and may result in action being taken on your account.
Na antarktydę można się dostać w legalby sposób jako badacz. Ja jestem jednym z badaczy i podczas mojej pracy chciałem pograć w Pokemon Go i natkąłem się na ten pokestop.
Confirmed, these are from the Navarro event :) I was the team lead for the Spiritualist, the Meditation Garden of Saint Jarvis. Niantic occasionally brings them out for events, and we got to retain our keys. Hoping for another Navarro event soon! 🙏
How did you get signal, OP? To the best of my knowledge McMurdo Station is too far south for BGAN signal to reach (it's cut off from the satellites by the curvature of the earth). Quite curious to learn more!
Satellite Internet
Yes, it's possible to get to Antarctica. No, you didn't go there :-) If you went, it should not be problematic for you to explain why you are doing research hundreds of kilometers from the nearest research station and which satellite internet device you are using. Things I think it will be harder for you to explain is why you just "randomly" happened to open the game right next to the only wayspot in a 700 kilometer radius, and why the penguins, a sea bird, is hanging out in large numbers equally far from the coast :-)
You have made an interesting discovery.
They are wayspots that were used in past Ingress events.
The truth about these mysterious wayspots is that they are here because they have now been moved to a place where it is most difficult for players to touch them.
If you receive a gift, give it to a friend as a valuable gift.
@NianticAaron @NianticAtlas @NianticAvocado @NianticCasey-ING @NianticDanbocat @NianticLC where is my answer?
i guess it's easy to see if a key or gift from that location is in someone's inventory or if the pokestop/portal has been visited. this should result in an immediate ban for using fly gps.
You have received answers by others here. These are lore-based Ingress waypoints that Niantic has moved here as they are no longer needed but still enables agents to keep souvenir keys. (Removing the waypoints would remove keys as well).
They are not fake. They just don't represent physical real-world locations. They represent, among others, the Archetypes of Ingress lore, and and are waypoints that Niantic themselves created for a specific event years ago.
Hey @69Konik2137-PGO! We have reviewed the report and taken action on the Wayspots in accordance with our policies. Thanks for helping us maintain the quality of the Wayspots.
What did you take?
Can you elaborate?
These wayspots are wayspots that were legally moved by the Ingress team after being used at Camp Navarro.
They were already accounted for by other Wayfinders, what are the steps you took?
LC are you PoGO'ers??? 😱😱😱
If these Portals are removed, the keys will disappear from the Agents who left them for themselves as a souvenir... If you don't know what you're doing, it's better to do nothing @NianticLC ...
Thank you @NianticLC for for taking action against invalid wayspots and caring about the quality of pokestops in our game.
@NianticLC
You and the Wayfarer team should discuss this with the Ingress team as soon as possible.
You have made an irreparable mistake.
If these special Ingress Wayspots, created and moved by Niantic themselves 5 years ago, now need to follow Wayfarer rules, then I have found a certain Van at Camp Navarro that might needs to be looked at. smh how can reviewers approve a van /s
Please please please check in with the Ingress team and restore these Wayspot ASAP and make sure every agents keeps the keys they have for these portals. A lot of agents, myself included, put a ton of work into these portals during the Camp Navarro and Schloss Kaltenberg events, and having them appear in the game was an amazing experience. The Portal Key of these portals is a unique memorabilia that will be lost because of someone not knowing what these portals purpose was. The whole reason the Wayspots were moved to Antarctica (again, by Niantic themselves) is to preserve them and not to delete them.
@NianticTintino-ING I see you're currently active as well, any chance you could take a look at this and check in with the Ingress team, if possible?
He's only active recently for Ambassador stuffs...
...which reminds me, to any current Ambassadors who played Ingress can this issue be escalated to both Wayfarer and Ingress team?
First, I told Brian, Thia, and ace on the Ingress forum.
I also informed Kawashima, the vice president, via Twitter.
I mean the van did get deleted a while back thanks to a certain employee >_>
They are all more reachable on Twitter. I'm pretty sure Hanke hasn't been on the Ingress forums for over a year. A ping does nothing on the forums in this case.
It would be great if you, as team leader, could also speak to the Ingress team and the Wayfarer team.
Embarrassing that the staff fell for this. There's no sat coverage at the pole and this troll has an LTE connection showing because he spoofed to the location in PoGo to take the screenshots. Also no-one from the station has ever set foot there. You can ask the players on the portals at the Antartica bases
Oh right, their WiFi signal strength seems to be good, too.
To the OP, what is your true intent for doing this?
