But that same standard is the same for golf courses, people will travel from all over to play on them and people will take their friends to play on them, maybe not as much as mini golf but not far off it

We have been told to accept outdoor football pitches even if gated and locked, and if they are gated and locked its because, for 99%of them at least, they are pay to use. And again I bring up bowls clubs/greens, most are private and pay to use, and I was even told in here when I asked about them that they are to be accepted, yet they fall under the exact same as a golf course, and are in fact even more common than golf courses in the uk

In the UK you have to pay to access almost all sports clubs, so the golf business argument could be used against all the clubs and sports facilities that we have! The only free sports tend to be things like parkrun, which doesn't have its own facilities, or clubs provided by local specialist shops, which all get rejected for being generic businesses even when you submit them in relation to the sports club they host! So I don't see why a golf club is any different to a rowing, running, cycling or other sports club. You pay to be a member, you socialise while playing your sport and you feel part of the community that the club has. Often these clubs would host events that the local community would attend. I think they all feel like excellent points of interest because of the culture and community part of the criteria.

Whether a golf course, or any athletic field, is a private business is irrelevant to whether it is eligible. A tennis court doesn't become ineligible simply because it is part of a business. A basketball court doesn't become ineligible simply because it is part of a business either. So the question becomes, are golf courses eligible on their own? As a social gathering location, I would say yes. Golf has always been used as a opportunity for friends and colleges to spend time together. Business relationships are often built around playing golf as both parties are in a relaxed physical activity.

Just a reminder that being a "Generic Business" does not automatically disqualify something as a Wayspot. If it did, it would have been part of the Ineligibility Criteria. Instead, it in the "Potentially Confusing" section and simply state that they don't meet criteria on their own. That means that they should not be automatically accepted just as they should not be automatically rejected. In fact, I have my suspicions that the widespread misunderstanding of this aspect of the criteria may be one of the reasons many people have found themselves in the red.

To be clear, we're told athletic fields are eligible if "publicly accessible." We both know that that it doesn't matter if it is limited/restricted access, but nowhere that I saw does it specifically say that an athletic field part of a business should be "automatically accepted."

Actually, more criteria tends to disagree with. A simple search of the word "business" implies that candidates that otherwise may be eligible that are associated to a business may become ineligible.

Generic local businesses don’t meet criteria on their own without having historical/cultural value, community significance, or distinctive architecture.

    • Do coin-operated machine play areas in front of stores and in malls make acceptable portal candidates? This is similar to the restaurants' play area question - if this is a publicly accessible play area in the mall, yes. If it's part of a commercial business, no.
    • Places like schools and private property say that we are to deny all nominations on those properties. Does this precedent extend to the denials that we are supposed to do on "Adult orientated Businesses" (**** clubs, liquor stores)? Example, a mural is painted on the wall of a marijuana shop. Are we to deny the mural because it's on a place that should not be accepted or are we to not worry about what type of business that it's on? The businesses themselves may not meet criteria since they would fall under generic businesses. A mural or candidate not related to the business should be reviewed on its own merit.

Activity-related businesses (gyms, dance studios, martial arts studios, etc.)

    • Acceptable: Businesses that have been featured prominently in travel guides, those with historical or cultural significance or are a popular tourist destination.
    • Not acceptable: Generic businesses with no distinguishing feature or significance or those that are part of a K-12 school.

I tried not to cherry pick criteria, so if you find something suggesting that an "activity-related business" such as a golf course should be an immediate accept, please let me know.

Even Casey agreed with me in their comment, but you didn't argue with them.

I did not say all golf courses would be immediate rejects, nor did I say I would reject them right away, nor imply all are generic businesses. I said they should be reviewed per criteria, and the criteria doesn't suggest that they are immediately eligible.

@NianticCasey-ING maybe you can take some time to read over all the points in this. Regardless of the final decision from the Wayfarere team, I think it would make a good addition to the guidelines, if that is being updated.

That first bit inalready brought up, there are football pitches that are locked and only allowed use when paid for, we have been told these are acceptable though, that's not publically accessible, so that is contradictory

But if we are to then decide if a golf course should be acceptable the farix listed the reasons why, sports orientated, community gathering, and to add further, they are places you would take friends visiting out of town (if they are into golf) . If w argument is that theres too many golf courses, then playgrounds, athletic courts etc. Should fall foul of that but they dont

Maybe we are overthinking this. The criteria posted a few comments up does note that we can accept businesses for "cultural significance ". I think a lot of golf courses/country clubs (although maybe not all) manage to meet that bar. Its a sport where people come together and socialize. So although they shouldn't be an auto-accept, I think a lot of them will meet the significance criteria.

If I was ever to start reviewing again I would always reject anything golf course related if it is a club that can only be used by members as your not actually meant to go into golf course areas or buildings if your not a member as it is classed as trespassing and niantic tell you that in the actual game as it flags up to stay aware of your surroundings and not to trespass. If it is a public golf course or mini putt etc I'd probably mark it low as I'm sure those running it would be rather cross having groups of people knocking about.

While I totally get what you mean, I misunderstood this at first too. But POIs in areas restricted to memberships/certain employees/etc are actually completely ok. You still aren't allowed to trespass obviously, lol, but Niantic literally just has said too bad- not everyone needs to have access to every POI.

Yep, the golfers and staff can use the waypoint and that's totally fine. Anyone who isn't a member who could be trespassing by accessing it just has to interact with other waypoints instead. Nothing wrong with that! Also some golf clubs have restaurants that members can bring friends to, or even open to the public, so I think they often have quite a large number of people who can access these waypoints.

And what about the mini golf courses i think they are unique on their own but the owner makes profit out of it

I would accept things like golf courses but i also had nominations that nominated every hole so after one or two i was like reject

  • Sugarstarzkill-PGOSugarstarzkill-PGO Posts: 437 ✭✭✭✭✭

Mini golf courses-I often see the features nominated within the course (windmill, waterfall... all the other crazy stuff) and I think those things can potentially be eligible.

With a regular golf course, it is only supposed to be one POI for the whole course, not a POI for each hole.
