Le piazze! Chiarimento.

    Rough translation, paraphrased:

”Why are squares (ie. an open-area plaza) not considered to be valid candidates?”

Generally a “square” is just an open space, with little more structure to them than does an ordinary sidewalk. There is no real fundamental difference between a paved space used for a market and a paved space in front of the courthouse/library/police station/gas pumps.

This is a case where signage makes all the difference. Find a sign naming the square, and (as for a scenic lookout point) that could be submitted in lieu.

Occasionally you’ll be able to find something like a logo built into the pavement or brickwork, and could perhaps try to submit that. However a large proportion of reviewers will need an extra amount of convincing for these. Be sure that any submissions of such logos/symbols are “permanent” and not just painted.

Le piazze in Italia hanno un significato sociale e culturale, sono un luogo di incontro e di confronto non solo un "luogo aperto". Inoltre, elencando i criteri di accettazione, rientrano nei tre sopra descritti.

Italian squares have a social and cultural meaning, they are a place of meeting and confrontation and not only an "open space". According to criteria the squares have three of them.

You may have to provide photos in order to show how your “square” differs from my description of an open space.

Parks and playground areas are also open spaces and as the squares are meeting places.

Parks, as open spaces, are ineligible “natural features” unless they have something like a sign naming them to use as an anchor, or some other (non-common) human-made object to submit in lieu,

Similarly, a playground needs to have some piece of its play equipment submitted, even if it is just the slides or a sandbox.

And the square will similarly need its sign or some other non-common object for its submission.

Since the ancient Romans "I fori", the squares, have an important role for the city, because the square is the social center. A garden, a beach can be only open spaces, a square is a meeting point and has a cultural and social meaning.

I don't think anyone is arguing they aren't gathering places. But for the purpose of wayfarer, it needs a physical object to tie the nomination to. Like others said, a sign works well. You'd just need to describe why its s good POI in your description/support.
