I don't think it they are - on their own - even if they are gathering spots (if you think about it, anything could be a gathering spot). Just like picknick benches, on their own they're not interesting enough to meet criteria, but if the place is locally very famous or there's something special about it (historically, visually) then you could try.
No they are not a good candidate on their own.
These were previously raised, along with other trash submissions ( i.e. dog mess bins) by a now banned forum member who repeatedly spammed this forum and the Ingress forums with awful suggestions and tried to twist the guidelines to suit their own argument.
Niantic expressly told them BBQ spots, dog mess bins, drinking water fountains were not good candidates.
Would have to see an image, but most BBQ "pits" I've seen are next to or attached to picnic shelters. Picnic shelters are eligible as places people gather to socialize since they can be rented out for family reunions, parties, organizational picnics, etc.
