Hospital's were updated recently.

Hello,

Can this be added to wayfarer help and a alert to players to stop accepting submissions inside of hospitals?

NianticCasey Niantic › admin March 6

Hi folks,

I appreciate the lively and mostly respectful discussion here. Thanks for keeping positive discourse in mind.

With regard to hospitals:

  • Eligible: gardens (including healing gardens) if they are a unique feature that would facilitate gathering and that is not in a restricted area.
  • Ineligible: the front door to the hospital / main lobby / waiting room / etc. if it would interfere with operation of emergency services, especially emergency service vehicles.

As I've mentioned in the past, AMAs and OPR provided guidance does still hold true unless a more recent clarification has nullified or updated the guideline. Just because OPR got a facelift and a new name doesn't mean that we're throwing out all the history and clarification that came before. Anything you notice that is currently invalid you can report via the Scanner.

Please keep in mind that I'm happy to address specific questions here, but if you need general clarifications or see trends that you want to surface, the form is where we're looking to populate the clarifications that will be posted to the Wayfarer Help Center.

Wayspots in a communal area of a hospital, such a garden where patients, visitors, and staff, can go or in a cafe in the hospital wouldn't really be interfering with the operations of a hospital, or at least not in the UK anyway.

Obviously it would be a different matter if the wayspots were say where the ambulances are parked up/stored when not in use or right in the middle of an A&E (Accidents and Emergencies) unit.

Whilst I was doing chemotherapy this year, there were two wayspots on the grounds of the hospital I had to go to, both of which are in communal areas/on the grounds that didn't effect the general running of the hospital and didn't interfere with anything the staff needed to do.

I Find if it does not effect the hospital or services it has it should be acceptable as long as if it is normally acceptable, unique painting that is permanently located? Yeah acceptable if not in an area where it is restricted or "interfere with operation of emergency services, especially emergency service vehicles."

The guidance from the Ingress Candidate Action Guide said hospitals as well as anything inside or on the building were a 1* reject. While I can make some of the same arguments that some of you are making that common areas and cafeterias, etc. don't necessarily impede emergency operations, I interpret the information provided by Niantic to mean that if it is in or on the building, reject them. Things of cultural, historical or artistic value on the grounds, like a healing garden, statues, memorials, time capsules, etc. could be eligible if they aren't in the way of the emergency room access.

Personally, I would like to see more things deemed acceptable at hospitals, but I believe Niantic is erring on the side of caution. Until they are more clear is stating that things inside hospitals are eligible, I will be giving these nominations 1* for obstructing emergency operations despite my personal thoughts on the subject.

i agree that anything on hospital grounds should be rejected but as quoted above by @NianticCasey-ING once it doesnt obstruct & not in restricted areas its fine

Ineligible: the front door to the hospital / main lobby / waiting room / etc. if it would interfere with operation of emergency services, especially emergency service vehicles.

Highlighted the bit you seem to be missing.

Indoor nominations are ineligible if it interferes with emergency services. Which is understandable.

Not all indoor nominations will interfere with emergency services, and if the submitter can prove that, and it meets criteria, then no reason it should be ineligible.

This was one guideline I didn't know- that anything inside hospitals should be rejected.

I live near a HUGE nationally renowned hospital. There are a ton of stops and gyms there. Reason being, they have a great many art exhibits on display there (really unique sculptures in many cases). I know going by stuff that already exists is NOT how we should rate current submissions. Just commenting to say this surprised me. None of the existing ones here interfere with emergency or medical services.

As an afterthought- this may be a unique case too. The hospital website has a full on map/description of all the exhibits/art pieces. I know this because I got a location edit on one. I was able to download the map to figure out exactly where it was located, thankfully. People are welcome to go into the hospital just to see them. I would venture a guess that the majority of hospitals aren't like this.

If they don't interfere with emergency services then Wayspots inside hospitals are allowed according to Niantic's wording :)

@Senmana-ING thank you for clarifying. It was hard to follow the multiple posts/opinions on this thread.

Sometimes the wording confuses reviewers. Niantic say Nominations at hospitals are

"Ineligible: the front door to the hospital / main lobby / waiting room / etc. if it would interfere with operation of emergency services, especially emergency service vehicles."

For me this indicates they're only ineligible if it interferes with emergency services. I think the OP read it differently, which is why I highlighted the important text to make it clear.

Not if it's in a communal area of a hospital.

I've had two wayspots accepted at the hospital where I was doing chemo. Both wayspots are in areas that are publicly accessible and don't involve going onto wards, near operation rooms, and so on.

Did they change the Matrix? 🐈 🐈 Or are we just rehashing the same discussions over again?

There are many areas within and without a hospital building that have no potential to interfere with emergency operations. A vast amount of square footage in most hospital complexes is devoted to offices, outpatient services, shops and eating space, to name a few.

@Sugarstarzkill-PGO I think your case is one of the few that could be acceptable inside a hospital. It is really, really hard for a reviewer to know for sure if they are giving the green light to something that doesn't block emergency services within a hospital. A submitter really needs to provide ironclad proof (like a website link with a map that shows that the hospital is inviting to public to a limited area to view a permanent art gallery). My default for everything in or on a hospital building is going to be 1-star reject on obstructs emergency services. It is up to the the submitter to move me from that.

I'm not following your logic here, please elaborate.

... Casey gives an example of a garden in a children's hospital, saying it could be acceptable.

... Guidance also says playgrounds could be acceptable.

But you are advocating for a blanket rejection of anything else where minors can be found, based on the fact that school grounds are forbidden? What am I missing here?

  • NorthSeaPoet-INGNorthSeaPoet-ING Posts: 895 ✭✭✭✭✭

They aren't in waiting rooms though. The hospital itself has no emergency department because it deals with specialised treatments such as chemotherapy.

The two submissions I made that got accepted are:

A frog statue, which is part of a trail in that town. The statue itself was erected to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of a library in that town being opened. The statue is on the hospital grounds, not in a building, and has safe access.

A Quilt of Memories, which was created by 40+ crafters, has been taken on tour around craft fairs and other places, before being donated to the Oncology Department at that hospital. The Quilt is dedicated to people who have lost their lives to cancer. It sits in the entrance area of the Oncology Department where there's two reception desks, a chemist, and a cafe.

Both wayspots are situated well away from the parts of the hospital that operations and treatments take place. Neither are in a waiting room, and even if they were, they would still be eligible as they do not interfere with emergencies.

So I would prefer it if you didn't jump to conclusions and tell me what I should and shouldn't have submitted.
