Introduction of banned words made my city name unusable

I can't use my city name in titles or description anymore because it ends with "-ano" (like many, many north-italian cities). How am I supposed to write precise titles and descriptions if I can't use my city name in them?
I'm sure it's my city name because after removing it my submission went through.

Then Why You Use Your City Name In Nomination?
Well, Catedrale di Lugano seems like a reasonable name, for instance.
I wonder if other cities also has this issue...
It's really something Niantic should revisit and look at again in my opinon.
The Scunthorpe problem (as it is known in the industry) is hard to solve without manual intervention. Luckily manual intervention is exactly what Wayfarer does. The solution would be for the app to ask 'are you sure' and if you click yes, ask reviewers an extra question: 'is this name offensive?'
IMO the solution is to NOT use banlists in the first place because people will get around them easily if they want while they keep catching innocent stuff. Having to handle all that manually is a ton of work because you can't possibly anticipate all the nasty words hiding inside other words or names in multiple different languages.
We already have mechanisms for reporting abuse, I get the urge to be proactive but this is really one of the cases where being reactive is way better.
I guess that you should use "Catedrale of the city that should not be named".
Although that might be a problem with HPWU.
At least this is a problem only in Wayfarer, imagine having to change the name of the city https://www.dw.com/en/austrian-village-of-****-decides-to-change-its-name/a-55740967
as i have seen you posted this also in Bugs.
First of all, give us an example.
Also, is there a need to use the Towns Name?
For example, if you wanted to add "Chiesa e Xenodochio di S. Perpetua" you wouldnt have to name it "Chiesa e Xenodochio di S. Perpetua Tirano"
OR
"Piazetta Luigi Trombini Tirano" - you dont have to use that Towns Name.
In Tirano there is a wayspot "Playground Tirano" - which is useless. It should be named after the Area of Street where the Playground is.
All other wayspots of importance are already in the database (Like "Santuario della Madonna di Tirano") and have that name in it.
I am sure you will find a way around this.
Also as a german native i do not know why "-ano" would be banned. I get Scunthorpe, but i dont get this.
"Negro" is banned in Spanish. Whatever the implications it might have in the English speaking world, it's mostly just a color in Spanish. So you have multiple rivers called "Río Negro", which in turn give names to cities or whole provinces, as is the case in Argentina.
So a city in Argentina may name a Park after the province, which should logically be named "Plaza Río Negro" if turned into a wayspot but you can't do that.
Well, today I tried submitting "Centro commerciale di Tirano" because that is the complete name written outside. Couldn't submit it.
With this method, one couldn't submit even "Duomo di Milano".
It shouldn't be difficult for niantic to import all the cities name and let them pass through the "bad words list".
Out of curiosity: how did you tracked down my city? :P
Addendum: I'm not one of those that randomly put city names at the beginning or at the end of the Titles (I know that is more comon among ingress players). City names in descriptions should be allowed, anyway.
Yes surely they are allowed, but you need to have them in a context. Often people here just use it to have an advantage in ingress.
How did i track down your city? Well i just needed to look at your other threads :)
Wow, only 10 posts so far and one of them is literally the stupidest question ever. You're doing great champ.
Out of the curiousity, why did "-ano" included to banned words while submitting?
I still didn't understand because English (or Italian) isn't my mother language, yeah you know it.
I hope you appreciate the irony of this being your tenth post...
In Spanish, you have a very different meaning of that word, if "ñ" is not used.
To prevent triggering a filter here, check the translator: https://translate.google.es/?sl=it&tl=en&text=ano&op=translate
But that would mean, if i submit something that is named "Vulkano" wouldnt get thru, just because of -ano? @NianticCasey-ING that isnt really great.
I would have to check all my open submissions if they have a "bad word" in Aramic or Suaheli...
Because in Italian is the scientific term for... Well, the ending of the gastroenteric tube.
Well, that's unexpected...., but make sense.
Even here in the forum niantic blocks sensitive words but in other languages they mean other things
Hey folks,
Let me clarify how this works in-app, as it's different than what you've experienced here in the forum.
Our system will check for explicit terms (and possible variations like pluralities or common misspellings) as they appear in the nomination. In this instance, it doesn't look like it's because of -ano appearing in "Lugano" but rather an Italian/Spanish word "T i r a r e" which can have s e x u a l connotations.
That being said, this is a new feature to Wayfarer so we are still looking at ways that it can be adapted to better serve the Wayfarer community so your feedback is super helpful.
Flag Casey for banned word evasion?
But seriously don't forget there was a thread that got deleted that you said you'd like into loosening that up. **** (A r a b) being one that stands out. Send the ridiculous moderation time sometimes that comes from editing posts.
Wow, Tirar as a banned word in Spanish?
Yes, it can have a s e x u a l meaning but its most common meaning is just throw. This reminds me of how common in Spain we use "coger" (to grab, to pick) and that one is a ton of fun for our Argentinian friends when we say that we're gonna pick the bus.
Automated systems can't catch everything! (and reporting this did no good, as I'm one of the people affected by the vanishing email bug)
Honestly, I don't see the need for an automatic filter like this, when all nominations will pass a whole bunch of human reviewers in Wayfarer anyway before they make it into the game. Wayfarers will catch and reject such offensive titles anyway, meaning the filter will more or less only result in false positives as it stands. Personally I have yet to ever see a wayspot with an offensive title or description since I started playing Niantic games in 2016. At the same time, I've already had two wayspots fail to submit due to this instance of the Scunthorpe problem just since the implementation of this filter.
Quick edit to add: If you absolutely want such a filter to prevent abuse from new wayfinders, you could apply the filter only to wayfarers who e.g. do not have a great wayfarer rating. In my experience, people who submit abusive text like that is either not reviewing at all, or reviewing very poorly. Wayfarers with a great rating have proven themselves to review well, and should be much, much less likely to ever submit foul words in their nominations.
Probably not as fun as people hearing my mother in a supermarket during my first visit to Spain, as she picked up a giant, pink-dressed, plush chicken and commented on its size.
Also, try to tell a Chilean that you live in a city called Pico Truncado...
This doomed to fail. This approach you've chosen to take has failed for as long as there has been attempts to banlist words. Everyone knows how to bypass it and you'll keep catching innocent words that accidentally trigger the filter. Please reconsider.
Also, I've always found it both funny and annoying that many interesting and nuanced discussions in here, especially about PRP delineation and pedestrian access, look like some ugly shouting match because the word s t r i p (as in "s t r i p of land" ) is moderated.
You simply cannot filter out all words that might have some s e x u a l connotations, because those are very often everyday words that are only inappropriate in a certain context.
I'm italian and I never heard about "t i r a r e" as a s e x u a l word.
As a software developer that has worked on numerous public facing projects, there is no way to eliminate double entendre, or curse/swear words from an open text entry system. Users are both too clever at finding workarounds, and too stupid not to.
Wayfarer already handles this with peer user review, perhaps add a rejection reason - contains profanity -
However, a simple filter for profanity by whole words might at least force users to be a little bit clever.
Creating POI/waypoints in the town of F*, Germany will still be a problem.
The name of the city I live in ("Tirano") is still amongst the banned words. This makes impossibile to submit anything with "Tirano" in the description or in the title.
Please help.
