Modal pop-up can't always be closed on mobile

This doesn't happen every time. But it is an issue if the image in the pop-up preview has a different resolution than the unit used to review.
Usually the pop-ups have a close button in the upper right corner, but it is unaccessible when the images are of this size. It is also impossible to tap outside the modal to close it.
As you can see in the screenshot, the scrollbar is at the very top.
The device used is a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with the latest version of Chrome.

You have already opened the full photo in a new window. You need to click on the little symbols on the bottom left.
Tapping on the image preview opens the photo as a new tab (or whatever you want to to call it on a mobile browser). But the enclosed screenshot is not the new photo tab, as the photos are stored in a Google cloud and have an address that is something like *.googleusercontent.com. You can see that my screenshot is from the wayfarer domain.
So the picture is getting opened on the same window as the wayfarer tab?
When you tap the photo, it opens up an overlay containing the photo that covers up the rest of the page. If you tap this overlay version of the pic, that then opens the full picture in a new tab. That's how Wayfarer has always worked for me on mobile. That being said, mine always has an X in the top corner to close the overlaid version of the photo. That seems to be missing in this particular instance and I'm unsure why.
The same happens on my iPhone 11 pro.
Workaround: rotate to landscape mode and you can click the X button
