The Word "Pipe" Banned From Nomination Titles
I was attempting to make a nomination earlier today and I was getting frustrated that a word I had used was apparently banned from the nomination. Thus, I had to delete words until I discovered the offending word. Eventually, I figured out that Wayfarer does not like the word "pipe" for some inexplicable reason.
I have a nominated a Victorian stink pipe before, and it was easily accepted by the reviewing community (as each one is unique in its design and no two are exactly alike). Suddenly, I am unable to correctly title my nomination because the word "pipe" is all of a sudden banned.
Initially, I thought maybe it was the word "stink" so I removed that from the description and supporting statement. Now, imagine if somebody wants to nominate a "halfpipe" (sports related), for example? This is STUPID!!!

P.S. It lets me use the word "pipe" both in the description of the Wayspot and the supporting statement. Just not the Wayspot title. Try it yourself. It also does not look right me having to use a Unicode text converter to find a lettering that will allow me to bypass the censorship and allow me to use the word "pipe" in the Wayspot title, so I'm withdrawing it.
We do often have issues with banned words since the filter use a list of banned words in a multiples languages, not only the one on your current phone.
As a french speaking person, while submitting in french, we do face some banned words because they do have another meaning in english.
"Pipe" is probably banned because it has a sex.ual meaning in french.
I also had a submission last night that was a sculpture made of pipes. It refused to a submit with the word “pipe” in the title and also the word “pipe” in the description was triggering it. Did a quick of Urban Dictionary and there you have “vulgar” slang that might be the reason. But come on, to ban a common neutral word?
Does this mean no more Stink Pipes? 🤞
It means the French can’t mention Les Trois St. Maries,
the Italians cannot refer to mountains...
In Spanish, ‘red’ means ‘network’, but in English reds may be slang for certain dr.ug.s.
Is nothing safe from the virtue police?
I assume Niantic saw that all three featured submissions in NR02 Juliet 11 were stink pipes and acted quickly to stop any copycat submissions of them.
They are mass produced street furniture and in some areas of London they seem to be on every street. I'm convinced that they meet none of the three acceptance criteria.
I meant l.e.s. Trois st. Marie’s
The word pipe is not just going to be used in relation to stink pipes. It could be used in relation to any number of sports, it's also a surname, the name of one or more towns and he word could be used in relation to art installations too, as was mentioned above. The word pipe could be used in reference to several musical instruments such as bagPIPES or organs. This word banning is stupid!
Why must we always beg to Niantic for them to be better communicators?
E.g.
I'd love clarification as to why such a random word has been banned.
Yea, went crazy the other day, trying to found out what's going on. Why can't I submit my nomination!? Apparently I can't use the surname of a very famous person as it goes "Budicki", well, you can see why.
I tried to make a joke and found out I couldn't right the word Gasol. :/ (removed joke and it passed no problems.)
People with have to name their so-called "Victorian" stink pipes by what they ahould be called: "20th Century Sewer Vent", because that is what they literally are and all of the ones I have seen in game are almost certainly post-Victorian.
Yeah, good idea. It is disheartening to always see people defend irrational decisions by Niantic. You'd think Niantic was working for the Ministry of Truth given all of the words they like to ban! I for one reject our descent into Newspeak!
However anyone feels about stink pipes, banning the word "pipe" is silly! Let's hope this is resolved soon
@NianticGray The word "pipe" is a banned word. Can Niantic take a look at this word and whether they really want to ban the usage of "pipe?" I'm sure there's plenty of plumbers confused why the word is banned.
Not surprised by any of this tbh. Place names such as Scunthorpe and Failand are banned (many more are affected I'm sure). We need clarification from niantic on what the banned words are and why they have implemented such a system
I have this exact same issue with the spanish word for flag, i can't use the word "Bandera" on a title anymore, this is recently though, as a couple of months ago i used it on a title, and today i couldn't when nominating, neither when editing the title.
and Germans can't refer to birds, since V ögeln is the plural accussative for birds, and if it is written with a small v:
As you say, this situation is clearly ridiculous! Yet there are people who are happy with the insanity from Niantic and even defend it. Sadly, I don't believe Niantic is going to listen to the players in this case.
Considering reviewers are supposed to reject any submissions including unacceptable language, why do these sort of filters even need to be applied? English people understand that pipe isn't a rude word in English! Similarly Germans will understand when bird is appropriate! They could ban the obvious words that are universally unacceptable, and let the reviewers do the rest.
Another strange example: Germans can't write "Schützengilde" (literally: marksmen's guild). The reason is not the adult oriented word itself, it is because of the part "zengi" .... iirc it is turkish and similar to the N-word.
Another example: friend of mine tried to submit a playground. Since bigger towns have lots of playgrounds it's usual, that the street name is then part of the title. So "Spielplatz <streetname>" (Spielplatz = playground) is the common title. Her example was in the street Leisniger Straße. Leisnig is the name of a town. Banned because of niger 🤦♂️
