The key point is that it is the trail that meets criteria. The markers are anchor points for that trail. The trail should be an official route following a set path and have some sort of unique identifier.
It is often the case that markers are all very similar as it helps identify tat route from another.
So if the markers you are considering are at intersections, those are decision points where you need a marker to ensure you stay on the trail.

If the markings don’t refeence the cycling trail, i would not vote to accept these.

If the writing on the blocks is a trail marker, this is eligible, regardless of the blocks themselves being just infrastructure.
The “mass product” rejection criteria - wasn’t that ages ago? Something that was in 2019.
There were many players of the other game that went berserk if someone submitted a trail marker.

That wording is a problem. Trail markers are often mass-produced (certainly the ones for UK PROWs are), but this doesn’t stop them being eligible.
hence the clarification:
not debating, just supplying the answer to “is it still stated?”.

Indeed Niantic could add specify what’s a mass produced item. In general I see before my eye: pylons, lanterns. “Mass produced item”
It’s 2026 and people still ask if a trail marker is a mass produced item. There’s confusion.

I think that the trail markers I am familiar with are useful for following a trail because they are mass produced. The trail is the interesting thing, as the clarification says, and markers are an identifiable point that keeps people moving along it. I didn’t comment on these because I was not clear if they were markers to keep people on the trail or bollards to keep traffic off it.
I don’t know how to better state that something that is “just” a mass produced item with no other value is a rejection reason. But a mass produced playground set still has play value in its setting. A mass produced LFL kit has value when placed for the community. Like that maybe?
If ‘名水’ is an abbreviation for the 名古屋市水道局(Nagoya City Waterworks Bureau), then isn’t this likely a waterworks sign indicating major water pipes underground, rather than a cycling road sign?

To reiterate: This is not a sign indicating a cycling path. It is a bollard to prevent vehicle access.
The characters engraved on that bollard are “名水” (Meisui). Japanese uses both phonetic characters (kana) and ideographic characters (kanji). Both characters engraved are kanji: ‘名’ means name, and “水” means water or famous. You should be able to see that these characters have nothing to do with bicycles or exercise, nor do they relate to the “Owari Cycling Road (尾張サイクリングロード).”
Now, let’s investigate what this “名水” is.
If you read Wikipedia in Japanese, you should find the words “名古屋市上下水道局”.
‘名古屋(nagoya)’ is the city name, and “水道局” is the waterworks bureau. In other words, it simply takes the first letter “名” (“name”, or “famous”) and the sixth letter “水” (water) as initials.
