So I’ve been working on populating out a public recreation reserve with waypoints and one of the ones I did early doors was a wooden and brass road sign for an apres ski bar/restaurant called Heidi’s Hut - but there was no actual Waypoint for the hut itself which I don’t think helped in getting it accepted. The waypoint for the hut has since been accepted and added in-game, so I thought it worth appealing the road sign waypoint again as it’s the only sign for the hut anywhere else and I personally think a nice bit of art, certainly compared to the standard trail markers in the area - this is certainly far more unique than they are!

My thoughts without further details
The apres ski hut is a good wayspot as it is a place to socialise.
A sign for that place is not in itself a place to socialise. It could have been a proxy for the actual location but since the actual location now is a wayspot I would consider it at best a duplicate or possibly a directional sign which is not eligible.
There are two main ways to access Heidi’s, which is either via trail access or track access. I’ve put some pins on a screenshot where the sign is in relation to the actual hut. The track the sign is used by walkers/runners/dog walkers (year round). It’s the only sign that isn’t on the building for the hut and it is just after the track (not really a road) splits off and a decent distance away.
The coordinates I posted were just copied directly off the submission page, the normal coordinates are: 44.92680° S, 168.74220° E - you can see the sign fairly clearly on Apple Maps satellite but not Google Maps.
I guess my thought process behind it is since there’s a few options for things like directional sign, trail marker, place name signs etc, I’d have thought the sign leading you on the correct track to Heidi’s just as important as any other trail marker which get accepted like candy (and easily more artistic than half the accepted waypoint ‘trail markers’ more locally around where I live which are wooden posts in the ground with an arrow). I’m not leaning heavily on the artistic side of things for this even though it’s a nice sign, but it’s definitely better looking than a post in the ground haha.

This definitely sounds like a place I’d love to visit! But…. There is some nuance to what you are trying to add.
First note is that category tags don’t necessarily mean that something is eligible.
In addition I’ll add some clarification to trail markers vs directional signs below.
Often a sign is a proxy for a location. So if you have one, the other is considered a duplicate. Due to that, we need more information to give you better advice.
I can definitely see there’s a lot of nuance in what defines a trail marker!
I guess one of the stand-out points from the link you provided is “at a decision point. The object and its function are unique.” That’s the primary purpose of the sign, it is how walkers, bikers etc know that is the correct track to the hut. If it was just on a single track to the hut with no fork or anything I’d understand more that it has no function as a trail marker, but it this case it has a function which is to guide what fork to travel.
It’s also artistic, so blends nicely with the surrounding environment but a lovely piece of metal with cut-through lettering on some well-aged wood.
For the proxy thought, I wouldn’t say in this regard that it is a proxy - I would see that more like the giant signs at the entrance to a mall area, those signs would be the proxy to all the shops so you’d use the sign instead of each shop.
In the Heidi’s sign it’s only purpose is to tell you what track to take - most importantly I think, it’s over 350 metres away, so even less of a proxy.
