Does the 20m minimum distance rule apply between PokéStops and Gyms?

Hi everyone,

I recently had a Wayspot accepted that appeared in Pokémon GO as a PokéStop, and I noticed it is located extremely close to an existing Gym — certainly less than 20 meters away. I always assumed the 20m minimum distance rule applied between all POIs regardless of type, but this seems to suggest otherwise.

My question is: does the 20m minimum distance rule only apply between PokéStops, or does it also apply between PokéStops and Gyms? Or is this simply a case where the system didn’t apply the rule correctly?

I’m asking because this could change how I approach nominations in my area, especially in rural zones where every POI counts.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You are working on old information.
For several years now the community has observed that all that is required is to be in a different cell.
As long as there is an invisible cell line between them and they are in otherwise empty Level 17 they can each become a gym or pokestop.
But do use the wayfarer map and search for wayfarer tools index( community developed tools) to ensure the wayspots are recorded at correct locations.

Thank you so much for this, I genuinely didn’t know! I’ve been working with the 20m rule for years and this changes a lot for me in terms of nomination strategy. I’m a bit embarrassed it took me this long to find out

Could you point me to the Wayfarer Tools Index you mentioned? I’m not familiar with it and it sounds like something that would be very useful for checking cell locations before submitting nominations. Thanks again!

we are not allow to directly share a link to third party tools, but you can find it if you google “wayfarer tools”.

there will also be an invite to the “Wayfarer Discussion Discord” where we can talk about them freely.

many wayfarer ambassadors, including the one who developed the tools are members there!

That makes total sense, thank you! Just knowing it exists is enough — I can find my own way from here. I’ll look it up on Google and check out the Discord too. I appreciate the nudge in the right direction rather than just handing me everything! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thanks again for all the help, this thread has been really eye-opening.

Ok, I have installed all, and this is game changer hahaha, thank you so much.

Just incase anyone hasnt fully explained

The pokemon go poi map used to use the ingress poi map but with the cells on top of it. Ingress has the 20m rule (though there was a great few months where that vanished, got so many good farming spots for that lol)

so because of that, pokemon go also had the 20m rule on top of the cell rule

But then niantic created the wayfarer map, which had all the pois on it and the ganes populated from that. Thats when it was discovered the pokemon go didnt have the 20m rule, it was jist a side effect of using the ingress map
