I even contacted the town of Wilson on Facebook, and they did not recognize this plaque.

It seems a mighty odd place for that sort of plaque.
Indent have any of the fancy tools to check it.
Google’s AI mode says that this plaque is real, but is located in Maplewood Cemetery near the grave of General Joshua Barnes. Street view of the Barnes obelisk does show a possible matching square marker to the left, in front of the Farmer headstone:
So while the plaque itself may not be fake, it’s very likely that the location has been manipulated. The cemetery itself, at 400 College Street in Wilson, is certainly quite some distance away.
Thank you!
Cemetery grass looks much more in line with this plaque than the roadside where it is pinned.
Hmm…I can’t find this. And on second thought, the grass in that photo is a lot nicer than the grass at this cemetery. Ty for trying to help!
Indeed, I never take AI summaries as gospel - Google seemed pretty sure that this plaque was real and at the cemetery spot, but I don’t know where that data was sourced and it might be apocryphal. I did manage to learn a lot about General Joshua Barnes, though, including that he named his son after Louis Dicken Wilson himself! So there is a bit of correlation between the two people. Now I want to go stroll through that cemetery! Unfortunately, that would be a tough commute.
The Barnes memorial is at 35.73245510493659, -77.908032397447 .
Lol I did a new search, and it referenced this topic to tell me that the plaque is fake XD.
I think there is a row of marble grave stones, not a set in plaque there.
Hi @cyndiepooh,
Thanks for the report. We will review this location and follow up with updates.
Regards,
I don’t see where I gave the previous ticket numbers here: 42069185 through a reporting form and 42054403 through help chat.
I have reviewed the tickets, and based on a conversation with a city official, I have gone ahead and removed the Wayspot.
Thanks for helping us maintain the quality of the Wayspots.
Regards,
Doesn’t sound like some peoples opinion that staff make decisions with no evidence.
Thank you @NianticOren and the rest of the team.
Thank you @nianticoren
I have said outside these forums that Niantic staff seems reticent to retire wayspots because (my observation) they act based on evidence and proof rather than just anecdotal reports. Thank you for going that extra step.
