Title: Velupillai Prabhakaran Mural SVR Hair Salon
Description: Velupillai Prabhakaran was a Tamil revolutionary from Sri Lanka and a symbol to all Tamil people. His visage graces a wall in the SVR hair salon in the form of a mural.
Supporting info: Mural of historical figure as mentioned in description. Important symbol to the Indian Barbershop which he presides in as well as its patrons. On a separate wall of the barbershop is the mural of Che Guevara. Barbershop is also a great place to socialise. Area is pedestrian accessible. Name of barbershop is SVR hair salon and can be seen on street view. Photo taken with consent from the owner. Thanks
Status: Not Accepted
Reviewers provided these top reasons for not accepting this submission:
The submission is on private property which is not publicly accessible
The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning
I don’t see how this can be rejected as private property. It’s as thought they expect the barber to come outside to cut your hair or something. Also, I’d say having a mural of an important Tamil figure conveys some historical and cultural meaning in an Indian Barbershop. Am I being trolled?
Your submission’s title reads like it is for the “hair salon”, which is normally a generic business. The second rejection reason there is what comes up when reviewers select “generic business.” The first rejection reason is incorrect, unless that hair salon is in someone’s private home.
My suggestion would be to first try a new submission leaving “Hair Salon” out of the title. You are submitting the mural, not the hair salon. You could even resubmit with the same photos.
You may want to explain to reviewers to check the tool tip to see that business property is not considered private property. I don’t usually mention negatives like that, but it seems like you may need to educate reviewers in your area. This would go in the supporting section if you choose to include it.
If it is rejected again, I would try an appeal. We get 2 appeals, each on a 15 day counter before we can use them again, so I usually try a resubmit before I use an appeal. Unless there is a reason I can’t easily resubmit.
Thank you so much for your insight. This definitely isn’t the first time this has happened but it’s my first post here because of it.
Something tells me “reviewer education” will be easier said than done, but I acknowledge the necessity of your suggestion. It just pains me to see so many low quality wayspots going through, while reasonable nominations get shot down left and right
Salons can be a good nomination. I would submit the salon instead of this mural. Prabhakaran is a controversial figure and is seen as an extremist by some factions in Asia (read Srilanka). It can get removed anytime even if it gets approved.
Salons work like a charm in appeals. Btw, I have had some of the most interesting conversations in Salons. They are hotspots for any discussions like political, sports related, films etc. It might be a Asia specific thing but please don’t directly write off suggestions because you might not have the context. Have a great day✌️
I did not dismiss your suggestion. I told the op to keep in mind that it had already been rejected as a generic business. If you would like to proceed with explaining to the OP how to present this as other than a generic business, please continue. This is not something I have ever had success with in order to help them.
As an asian dude whose spent most of his (young) adult life in the west, I can tell you it most probably IS an asian (Malaysian) thing. When you go to a hair salon here, you either get your haircut in abject silence, or get mercilessly interrogated by nosy hairdresser aunties.
Hey guys, have some updates, just so we can get a bit of closure:
So the re-submission was rejected AGAIN by the community for the SAME exact reasons (not unique/historical/meaningful & on private property). So I ended up sending an appeal.
And thankfully, Niantic saw reason and accepted the nomination.
I guess the my community still has some habits that need to be re-conditioned and/or they just saw the same nomination and blasted it down without a second glance. Either way, thanks everyone for your help!
