Had a really cool subdivision monument not accepted while the other one less than a mile away and worst looking since it was a plain plaque was accepted. Is it even worth appealing? How does the appeal process work??

It’s not easy to know where best to post so I shall move this to Nomination Support as that sounds more appropriate.

Each nomination needs to stand on its own merits.
I think it matters who gets your nomination in review. There are very few of these subdivision monuments I accept, as 99% of them do not meet any of the eligibility requirements of a great place for exercise, exploration, or being social. https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en/21-wayfarer/section/166-wayspot-criteria/
Niantic’s refusal to make a clarification on these and give us a clear way to reject them with a “does not meet criteria” option in the review flow has made these difficult to evaluate. Just a thumbs down on the last three questions does not reject, according to the November 2023 AMA. So they may get accepted by some reviewers who think they are rejecting them. Or some reviewers may just accept since they see them live in game. They rarely meet removal criteria (whatever that internal guideline is) if accepted.
I can’t guess how the appeals reviewer will see this, especially since I haven’t seen the nomination yet, but I did see a post here of an appeal incorrectly rejected as being “a generic neighborhood sign” fwiw.
If you do decided to appeal, address how it meets eligibility criteria.
We currently have 2 appeals, each on a 15 day counter before we can use them again. If you have an appeal to use, there will be a button on the rejected contribution:
When you tap that button, you will have a chance to make a statement to the (human) appeals reviewer:
They will either accept the nomination or reject it. If they reject it, they will give you a “Niantic Note” explaining why they did not:
An appeal decision is final, but Niantic has asked for us to let them know if they get it wrong, so occasionally you will see posts here like the one I linked in my previous comment with a request to have the decision looked at again. Sometimes they are overturned if the appeal decision was clearly wrong as his was.
Oh, and the appeals reviewers are addressing things very quickly for the most part. Usually under two weeks for an answer.
