The ML system has done wonders for the backlog but it is frustrating that it has such a high false positive rate. This could be remedied by a second tier of appeals which if approved simply kick the submission back into normal human voting. Niantic reviews for these appeals could be trivial, basically just glancing at the photo for a couple of seconds to make sure that it could possibly be a valid POI and not coal, and the voters would then do the major legwork of approving or rejecting the submission as they would normally.
These should be completely different, lesser appeals than those of voter-rejected submissions, which require more nuance. Right now it is wasteful that we sometimes need to burn full appeals on things the voters would understand but the AI for whatever reason cannot.
