Is "upgrading" a Wayspot allowed?

Not sure if this is the right category, feel free to move if not.

In the past, but now more recently with the edit challenge I have come across Wayspots that are part of and represent a bigger thing, which themselves are not Wayspots. For example, a Wayspot in my city is specifically about the statues which decorate a fountain while the fountain itself is not a Wayspot, and I’d rather play with and learn about the entire fountain instead of just the statues.

With the edit challenge I’ve attempted to “upgrade” two of these Wayspots so that they reference the object they are actually attached to, by renaming and adding a description. For one of these Wayspots, a sign for a hotel, I’ve seperatly opened a report due to a 3rd party photo, however when Niantic reviewed the report they also rejected my title and description as invalid as they dont count the Wayspot for the sign as a Wayspot for the hotel itself.

My question now is, is it really the case that we should submit a seperate Wayspot even though something directly attached to it is part of the thing or can we rename the Wayspot to represent the “bigger thing”? I personally think that having two Wayspots doesn’t really make a lot of sense but I might have missed a rule or a clarification in the past, like how businesses that change hands should be reported and resubmitted.

(if Niantic sees this topic and decides that seperate Wayspots should be created, feel free to reject my edits for Brunnenstatue am Kohlmarkt at 52.262498, 10.519937 :see_no_evil:)

I am not sure I understand your question. Niantic told you in the response that the artwork was the submission for the Wayspot, and that you could submit a new nomination. If you feel it is valid as a separate Wayspot, then submit it. If you do not feel it is valid as a separate Wayspot, then don’t submit it.

Trying to “upgrade” a Wayspot in the way you are demonstrating by making it something more than what it is has been defined as abuse. You could include more information about the setting for the statues in the description, but not change the Wayspot to the fountain. Or you could submit the fountain separately. I would guess, however, that it would be rejected for not being “Distinct,” or for being “connected to another Wayspot” as a recent post indicated: Appeal Rejected as Duplicate

…yeah I reread my post again and it’s a confusing mess ^^’

Basically, taking the fountain as an example again, I’d say that the fountain as a whole is more interesting than just the statues and therefore “deserves” it more to be a Wayspot. There are three scenarios:

  1. Statues stay, submit fountain as seperate Wayspot
  2. Statues stay, don’t submit fountain due to not being distinct enough
  3. Statues repurposed to fountain

Which of these three is the right way to go? Going by the mail from Niantic it’s 1), but I’m unsure if the reviewer understood that the “artwork” is a sign for the hotel, which why I wanted to ask for advice in case Niantic clarified it somewhere already (in general, not directly for the fountain in the example)

In general “repurposing” is seen as abuse. As they see it: all items need to be voted on sperately to determine if they meet criteria. There are some instances such as Murals that get updated or a park has a name change where they sometimes allow it to be updated but I dont known of any cases like this. If the statues already a wayspot I would probably just leave as is. Its unfortunate that the original submitter didnt think about the whole fountain but unfortunately since they would, or should be, at the same location even if you got the whole fountain as its own wayspot approved it probably wouldnt be included in any games (especially PoGo, best you could hope for is maybe a Dmax spot) due to proximity to the current statue wayspot. So unless the statue wayspot got removed, and unfortunately there isnt a good reason for removal in this scenario, the statue would still be the primary wayspot. A possible middle ground if you want the fountain to be more highlighted would be to submit a photo edit that displays the statues and the whole fountain. Might even make it easier to locate as far as a POI goes. Theres a chance it might not go through easily but Id vote to accept it if it was nice and centered and didnt have any obvious photo rejections like license plates/faces & people. Something like this:

Then you will just have to hope people thumbs up your new photo so that photo can possibly replace the main one eventually. Wish you the best with this situation!
